Eight Mavericks in the first Mega Man X game: Launch Octopus, Chill Penguin, Armored Armadillo, Flame Mammoth, Storm Eagle, Boomer Kuwanger, Spark Mandrill, and Sting Chameleon.

Maverick, known as Irregular (イレギュラー Iregyurā) in Japan, is a term from the Mega Man franchise with varying meaning, generally being used for Reploids and Mechaniloids that are active threats to the safety of humans and other Reploids. The antagonists of the Mega Man X series are all recognized as Mavericks, while in the Mega Man Zero series characters unjustly labelled as Mavericks are allies. The term is also used for wild machines in the Mega Man ZX series.

Maverick causes[]

There is no single cause for a Reploid or Mechaniloid to be considered a Maverick. Reasons for "going Maverick" may include software bugs, viruses, reprogramming, or even their own free will.[1] The term describes criminal Reploids who engage in immoral behaviors such as murder, robbery, and vandalism. These standards are set by human ethics, but because Reploids are stronger than humans, punishments for Mavericks are far greater than would be warranted for humans, often resulting in extended prison time, deactivation, or outright euthanasia.[2]

Flawed/Error Mavericks[]

X3 FMV CrushCrawfish

Crush Crawfish is an example of an error Maverick.

Early cases of Reploids and Mechaniloids becoming Mavericks were due to their mental routines and programming suffering from manufacturing bugs.[3] It is not by choice that they are Maverick, but rather because their malfunctioning minds make them act dangerously with no consideration of the consequences. At first, these Mavericks could be dealt with via emergency shutdown devices leading to repairs. Frequent outbreaks and the Mavericks hacking the devices themselves, however, brought on a gradual increase to the Maverick threat.[2]

Wire Sponge is the first major Maverick described with a programming flaw, though he was designed to be a Maverick from the start.[4] Crush Crawfish is another example, being a military Reploid who failed to differentiate targets and attacked indiscriminately.[4] Zero himself was a flawed Maverick at first, being unwilling to obey orders as well as relishing in causing destruction due to a flaw in his cognitive program. This is the primary reason why Dr. Wily sealed him away.[5]

Viral Mavericks[]

"The virus is already taking control of me... Soon I'll become one of the Mavericks... "
Crescent Grizzly, Mega Man X5
SigmaVirus

The Sigma Virus, one of the most infamous viruses.

A frequent cause of Mavericks is computer viruses. Viruses can infect Reploids and Mechaniloids, causing them to malfunction into violent and dangerous mindsets.

The Maverick Virus, created by Dr. Wily some time in 20XX, was the first virus to make Reploids and Mechaniloids go haywire (hence the name). Furthermore, an evolution of it known as the Sigma Virus was the most destructive and widespread virus in the entire series, being solely responsible for catastrophes such as the Dopple Town riots and the Earth Crisis. Not only did the Sigma Virus make Reploids rebellious, but it also influenced them with the anti-human prejudice of Sigma himself, making it especially dangerous to human life. An unrelated virus, the Nightmare Virus, was capable of turning Reploids into zombie-like slaves, with which Gate planned to enslave all "low-grade" Reploids.[6][7]

Certain robots do not suffer any effects of viral infection. X's body can be damaged by the Sigma Virus but his mind cannot be corrupted, while Zero is totally immune to viruses and can in fact absorb them to grow stronger. New generation Reploids such as Axl are granted inherent immunity to viruses thanks to their Copy Chips, which give them unparalleled control of their bodies and DNA.[8]

Other influences[]

There are a host of other malicious influences which can corrupt Reploid minds, similar to viruses but not digital in nature, in other media. Examples include the Limited from Rockman X Mega Mission, and the Worms from the Rockman X3 manga.

The Dark Elf and Baby Elves were used to brainwash Reploids in the Mega Man Zero series, forcing them to obey their master (such as Elpizo or Omega).[9][10] In the Mega Man ZX series, Model W could influence both organic and inorganic beings into "Mavericks", a term which had grown broad by that time and was used for any dangerous being.[11] Model W's victims spanned from wild Mechaniloids, to Serpent, to Albert himself.

Reprogrammed Mavericks[]

CyberPeacock2

Cyber Peacock is an example of a reprogrammed Maverick.

There are several instances of Maverick activity induced via total reprogramming or brainwashing. This is not simply the influence of a virus, but rather a complete rehaul of a Reploid's programming, changing who they are and forcing them to commit crimes or other dangerous acts that they would likely never do otherwise.

A prominent example is Magna Centipede, a former Maverick Hunter who was kidnapped and brainwashed into an emotionless Maverick.[4] If the player fails to assemble all three parts of Zero in Mega Man X2, Zero is resurrected as a Maverick and forced to fight X, returning to his senses upon his defeat.[12] Cyber Peacock was formerly a defensive program in Cyber Space, but he was reprogrammed by Sigma to attack anyone accessing the network.[4] Finally, criminals hired by Sigma hacked several Mechaniloids into causing mayhem in The Day of Σ.

Political Mavericks[]

X4Repliforce4

Repliforce was labelled Maverick for desiring an independent Reploid state.

"They're not going to end... the conflict you speak of will never go away... as long as humans are imperfect, it stands to reason that we, created by humans, are also imperfect... as long as humans continue to deny this natural outcome as Irregular, and as long as we live in a world where pseudo-heroes like you are born, we will continue to cry out for the independence of Reploids... our relationship with humans was predetermined from the moment our first unit was invented. We Reploids are mechanical puppets that wander through endless hell while in this world..."
Web Spider's dying words to X, in the Rockman X4 manga.

Not all Mavericks plot to harm humans or the government. Because the distinction of Mavericks is dictated by the Maverick Hunters and those they answer to, individuals or groups may be labelled as such for political reasons or misunderstandings.

A notable example is the Repliforce, a Reploid army which after being falsely accused of being Mavericks went against orders to create an independent Reploid state. When obstructed by the Maverick Hunters, Repliforce went as far as to occupy cities and even destroy one entirely in their coup d'état, only further reinforcing their Maverick status. They were mostly annihilated by the Hunters, and subsequently disbanded.

The Rebellion Army led by Epsilon in Mega Man X: Command Mission is another political example. Their banishing of humans, not to mention reckless experimentation with Force Metal and some of the Cadre's questionable tactics, were interpreted as Maverick activity by the Federation. After the fall of the Rebellion, Colonel Redips wrongfully labeled X and the Resistance as Mavericks to justify their destruction so he could get his hands on Supra-Force Metal. Once Redips was defeated and exposed as a Maverick himself, both the Resistance and Epsilon were deferred of "Maverick" status.

Yet another example would be the Resistance in the Mega Man Zero series. The Resistance did not seek to harm humanity in any way (with the notable exception of Elpizo) and were only labeled Maverick for defying the Neo Arcadian regime.

Free-will Mavericks[]

X8Reploids

The new generation Reploids, who chose to go Maverick of their own accord.

"This decision to wage battle against the old world was made consciously. In other words, we possess the power to go Maverick at will! "
Lumine, Mega Man X8

Some Reploids are labeled Mavericks because they have consciously decided, without any infection or flaw in their circuits, to harm humans. These are criminals, mercenaries, or rebels who engage in anti-human activities, although many also harm innocent Reploids. Dr. Light himself was aware of this dangerous possibility when he created X, but understood it was integral to the concept of free will.[13]

Unlike political Mavericks, these individuals accept that their goals are at odds with human civilization, although some still dislike the designation due to its implications that they are irregular in some way or are suffering from a viral infection.[14][15] Such free-will Mavericks usually act more rationally than viral or error Mavericks, but some still associate or work with them.[16]

The new generation Reploids who followed Sigma in Mega Man X8 are a note-worthy example of free-will Mavericks. The initial hypothesis by Alia suggested they were influenced into becoming Mavericks by Sigma, whose DNA was stored in their Copy Chip databases;[17] she then modified it to suggest that they were his clones.[18] Lumine later revealed that new generation Reploids could "go Maverick at will" and chose to collectively,[19] deliberately follow Sigma,[20] taking advantage of his leadership,[21] but Lumine disposed of Sigma when he was no longer useful to Lumine's goals.[22] Lumine implied that this ability to consciously become Maverick via the copy chips meant the New Generation Mavericks were more insane than Sigma ever was.[23]

Colonel Redips, implied to also be a new generation Reploid with shape-changing abilities,[24] is another example of a free-will Maverick. Redips had no obvious irregularities or relationship to Sigma and had his own agenda,[25] but he decided to evolve into the "ruler of all Reploids" after becoming dissatisfied over the course of many decades by his fellow Reploids' unwillingness to change the world despite their great potential.[26]

Anger at the Maverick Hunters as individuals or as an institution is also a frequently cited reason for going Maverick. A tragic case of this is Gravity Beetle, who was motivated to join Dr. Doppler's forces in Mega Man X3 to avenge the death of his brother Boomer Kuwanger in Mega Man X.[27] Moreover, many Mavericks have reasons to go Maverick that have nothing to do with political persecution or physical condition.

As such, there can be overlap between free-will Mavericks and other kinds of Mavericks. For example, Vile in Maverick Hunter X is stated to have an irregularity in his electronic brain, and yet he retained enough sanity to willingly go Maverick without major impediment of thought.[28][29] Colonel Redips was also a political Maverick in that he was ambivalent about his "Maverick" status and believed that history would vindicate him.[14] The New Generation Reploids freely accessed Sigma's viral DNA to become like him,[30] and amongst their ranks Gigabolt Man-O-War and Optic Sunflower appeared to suffer from malfunctions,[31][32] but they believed in their cause and openly consented with joining Sigma's Maverick forces.[33][34] Sigma himself was influenced by the Maverick Virus,[35] but retained enough sanity to accept his status as a Maverick,[21] believing it necessary for the sake of Reploid evolution,[36] although he also advocated for human genocide as essential to this goal.[37][38] Gate was a similar case in that he was infected with the Zero Virus,[7] but the virus freed him of inhibitions that were holding him back from doing what he wanted to do anyway.[39]

Respondents to Mavericks[]

Maverick Hunters[]

The Maverick Hunters were the first official anti-Maverick peacekeeping organization, formed by Dr. Cain. They are Reploid soldiers who detain Mavericks and perform rescue operations. They act when Mavericks must be stopped by force, as humans are unable to control violent Mavericks. On numerous occasions, this organization has stopped Maverick attacks on human cities, but it has also failed to prevent some large-scale damage, such as the destruction of Dopple Town, the Sky Lagoon, and the space colony Eurasia.

Repliforce[]

Repliforce was a supplementary military organization meant to assist the Maverick Hunters in their peacekeeping efforts. However, they proved ineffective and quickly lost favor in the public eye.[40] Following the incident at the Sky Lagoon and Repliforce's subsequent move for independence, Repliforce themselves were labelled Mavericks and eradicated in the Great Repliforce War.

Mercenary groups[]

X7 Red Kills Maverick

Red, a bounty hunter, kills a Maverick.

Besides official organizations, there are underground networks of bounty hunters who fight Mavericks on their own. These are not sanctioned organizations and thus never cooperate with world governments, being borderline Maverick themselves. A notable example is the vigilante syndicate Red Alert, who eventually fell under Sigma's control themselves. Some mercenaries like Dynamo have even been known to work for the Mavericks, making them all the more dangerous.

Neo Arcadia[]

In the Mega Man Zero series, the government of Neo Arcadia has strict anti-Reploid laws designed to protect the human populace from Mavericks. Copy X misuses this system to fight an energy crisis by randomly labeling innocent Reploids as Mavericks, resulting in mass executions. The armies of Neo Arcadia label all of their enemies as Mavericks, regardless of if they seek to harm humans or not. Once Dr. Weil takes control of Neo Arcadia, he begins labeling anyone who goes against his rule as a Maverick, regardless of whether they are human or Reploid.

Guardians[]

The Guardians in the Mega Man ZX series travel the world, protecting civilians and investigating causes behind Maverick outbreaks. They were formed by Ciel and currently led by Prairie, and the antagonist Serpent was formerly a Guardian before being corrupted by Model W. They later participate in the raid on Ouroboros as well.

Hunter's Guild[]

The Hunter's Guild in the Mega Man ZX series is a Legion-sanctioned organization of mercenaries and treasure hunters. While they mostly seek treasures and artifacts, they also take jobs to hunt down dangerous Mavericks for the government.

Summary of in-series significance[]

Mega Man X series[]

Originally, the term Maverick is used for a Reploid that goes berserk, violent, and insane due to technical flaws with their thought circuits or because they are altered through external means. Mavericks present a large problem to the governments in the Mega Man X series. They actively fight against the governments and the Maverick Hunters, causing large amounts of collateral damage. Later on, Reploids are labeled Maverick upon being infected by the Sigma Virus or other type of virus.

Mavericks are the most destructive when they group together. This is usually hard for viral Mavericks to accomplish but, with Sigma either pulling the strings or directly infecting and controlling them, he has numerous times been able to organize them alongside other Mavericks for his elaborate schemes against the Maverick Hunters. Beside Mavericks who have irregularities or are infected with a virus, Sigma has persuaded, manipulated, or deceived normal Reploids to serve his cause, often leading to them becoming free-willed or political Mavericks. Mavericks of their own accord are useful to Sigma,[16] because he values Reploids' potential and agency in his quest for Reploid evolution.[29]

Mega Man X4 brought the most attention to the existence of political Mavericks when the Repliforce are branded Mavericks in their attempts to gain independence from humanity.

In Mega Man X8, it's revealed by Lumine that the New Generation Reploids can become "Maverick at will" without the need of viruses as they can alter their DNA to become like Sigma.

Mega Man Zero series[]

The term Maverick is used for any Reploid who opposes Neo Arcadia (more specifically, the human population of Neo Arcadia). Ciel created a Resistance to protect innocent Reploids labeled as Mavericks, although the only major Reploid characters who could have the original definition of Maverick applied to them are Elpizo and Copy X, since they tried to harm humans: Elpizo wanted to make a Reploid-only nation and eliminate humans (mirroring Sigma), and Copy X, aside from antagonizing Ciel, was also responsible for ordering the missile strike on the human residential place Area-3079, which resulted in the deaths of several humans.

In Mega Man Zero 4, Dr. Weil takes control of Neo Arcadia after Copy X's death, and similarly to his figurehead predecessor, any who opposes him, human or Reploid, is considered a Maverick, starting Operation Ragnarok to destroy all nature outside Neo Arcadia, including Area Zero and the caravan settlement, so no one could escape from him. Despite being a human, for wishing for humans and Reploids to either accept his rule or be destroyed, this makes him a Maverick himself in Zero's eyes, and Zero treated him as one.

Other Reploids that displayed Maverick behavior (by the original definition) are the bosses from Mega Man Zero 2 going berserk due to the Dark Elf in Yggdrasil, and later the Weil Numbers and the Einherjar Eight Warriors as they worked alongside Dr. Weil.

Mega Man ZX series[]

In the Mega Man ZX series, the term Maverick is almost only used for dangerous machines or robots, as Humanoids and Reploids are treated equally.[41] Mavericks live in the lawless wilderness known as Outlands, adapting to the environment, while the majority of the human population is protected from Mavericks in safety zones known as Innerpeace. It is later revealed that the Mavericks are created by Model W's evil influence, as its pieces are hidden underground in the Outlands.

It was originally speculated by the Guardians that all survivors of Maverick attacks hold the potential to become Mega Men, though it is later revealed that only those with Master Albert's DNA can become Mega Men.

The old definition of a Maverick as a dangerous or rebellious individual is seldom used. After Serpent's defeat in Vent's story, Vent calls Serpent a Maverick due to his actions, with Serpent rebutting that Vent is the Maverick for blocking evolutionary progress. In both stories' endings, Serpent also decries all of humanity as "the true Mavericks" in his last words. Similarly, in Mega Man ZX Advent, Ashe and Thetis call each other Mavericks due to their conflicting beliefs.

Mega Man Legends series[]

Technically Mavericks still existed on Elysium in the Mega Man Legends series. However, this connection was lost due to the different English translation in this series, where Irregulars were translated as Aberrant Units.

They are units that malfunctioned and threatened the Master System. Purifier Units are in charge to eliminate those units, similar to Maverick Hunters.

Mention in other series[]

  • In Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Zero's introduction quotes when fighting against Sentinel has him referring to Sentinel as a "Maverick".
  • In SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, Zero compares Wild Iori to a Maverick.
  • In Project X Zone, when Juri is assigned to X and Zero as their Solo Unit, Zero occasionally asks X if they should regard Juri as a Maverick due to her psychotic laughter and love of hurting her opponents. When Saya is assigned to X and Zero as their Solo Unit, X asks Saya if she's a Maverick but she says it depends, and she's a different sort of being. (I.e, a werefox of Ouma)
  • In the Archie Comics Mega Man series story "The X-Factor", the term Maverick originated as a buzzword to describe irregular Reploid behavior.

Videos[]

Etymology[]

  • "Maverick" is a word used to describe a person who thinks and acts independently of and differently from others. Such individuals are unconventional, and do not think or behave in the same way as other people. The Japanese name, "Irregular", means something contrary to the rules or to that which is normal or established. This refers to how Mavericks break the norm by threatening humans and other Reploids.

Trivia[]

  • They are referred to as their original name, "Irregulars", in the Mega Man Xtreme 2 English manual.
    • The term "Irregular" is also used in the western version of Mega Man X4, in Magma Dragoon's intro screen.
  • In the Archie Comics franchise during Worlds Unite, the Maverick Reploids revived by Sigma have a purple speech bubble with a pink border and text and purple eyes.
  • Visually, Mavericks tend to have more jagged or spiked designs and as well as other “threatening” features when compared to their civilian and non-Maverick brethren, who tend to have sleek and streamlined bodies. This was most likely to emphasis on how dangerous they were and that they were the enemy.

Plainly speaking, it is a generic term for Reploids and Mechaniloids whose thought routines and programming suffer from a fatal bug. It was created to differentiate the innocent from criminals who engage in destructive behaviours such as robbery, murder and destruction. The degree of severity varies, but these actions are all defined as "crimes" under the law. The standards are set by human ethics, but because Reploids are stronger than their human counterparts, the punishments doled out to those who commit crimes and become Maverick are far greater than would be warranted normally.
When Mavericks first appeared in society, they could be dealt with through use of emergency shutdown devices. Frequent outbreaks and the Mavericks hacking the devices themselves, however, brought on a gradual increase to the Maverick threat. Humans, with their bodies of flesh and blood, would only magnify the damage done to themselves if they tried to deal with them on their own. In addition, outbreaks continued to recur. For these reasons and more, people established an organization that used Reploids to counter Mavericks, known as the “Maverick Hunters”.

" Axl: "He's so far gone becoming Maverick he can't even talk... " Gigabolt Man-O-War: "What? What's a Maverick? Do you know what it is? " Axl: "Maverick? That's an out of control Reploid like yourself. I'll have to take you down." - Mega Man X8
  32. Optic Sunflower: "A Maverick Hunter!? Here!? Who in the world are you? Why are you here? Who am I?" - Mega Man X8
  33. Axl: "Has Sigma made you go Maverick? If I don't do something soon, there'll be a meltdown and we'll all be toast." Gigabolt Man-O-War: "......... ....................." Axl: "I can't believe you would claim loyalty to a dirtbag like Sigma." Gigabolt Man-O-War: "I'm no Maverick. I'm in complete control of myself and my actions." Axl: "Not realizing the evil you're doing just proves you're a Maverick!"
  34. Optic Sunflower: "X... Since you made it this far, you must have figured it out. You must have an inkling as to what we're after here. " X: "You Mavericks... You're under Sigma's control, aren't you?" Optic Sunflower: "No one can control us. You old models cannot even begin to comprehend my master's - OUR - greatness!" - Mega Man X8
  35. Sigma: "Zero... Who could have imagined that we'd cross paths at the end of the world. The moment your virus entered my system, the seed had been planted. That's when it all began... The destruction of the world!" Zero: "I've heard about enough of this garbage, Sigma." Sigma: "Don't get angry, Zero. I'm actually indebted to you. It is because of you that my children are able to create this magnificent new world in space." Zero: "Children? ........." Sigma: "That's right. The new generation Reploids born of the Jakob Project all bear copy chips containing my personal data. Now, the end of the world, and of you, has come! Farewell!" - Mega Man X8
  36. Sigma: "I need your help - to defeat X." Vile: "To defeat X?" Sigma: "Yes... In order to ensure our future and speed along our evolution." Vile: "Hah ha ha ha ha ha! What on Earth are you talking about?" "What could that worrywart Hunter possibly do for us?" Sigma: "His... worrying... That is precisely the quality that will prove beneficial to our cause. He alone possesses that ability. He thinks more deeply than the rest of us. He feels... normal Reploids are no match for his heart. But... he is unaware of his incredible power." Vile: "So, to take advantage of this power of his, you're planning to go Maverick?" Sigma: "Precisely." Vile: "And you want me to help you." Sigma: "That's why I've come here." - Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
  37. Sigma: "No!!! It's not possible! I'm a Reploid! I can't be destroyed by you! Why, X?! Why have you done this to us?! Without the humans, my Reploid brothers could have ushered in a new age....." - Mega Man X
  38. X: "Why...? Why are you doing this?" Sigma: "For our future, X. I believe it's time we put Reploid potential to the ultimate test." X: "You set this up from the start... Made the Mechaniloids go berserk... Caused the death and suffering of countless innocents..." Sigma: "There are many others on my side. You see, evolution requires sacrifice. Behold!" X: "Noooo!" - The Day of Σ
  39. Alia: "I hesitate to say this... He also aimed to make the strongest Reploids. Zero and X... He wanted you. He believed that the ultimate Reploid can never be analyzed... so he strived. So his program advanced to the point where no one could analyze it. He was much smarter than me... but I got ahead as I followed orders. Nobody gave him the proper recognition. Then he got isolated, and left saying this: I'll get revenge on all low Reploids who couldn't appreciate my ability! Building an ideal nation with high-end Reploids only... That was his ambition... The Nightmare is that very revenge on those who didn't appreciate him! It is the embodiment of his 'hatred'!" - Mega Man X6
