{{Nihongo|'''Zero'''|ゼロ|}} is the deuteragonist of the ''[[Mega Man X (series)|Mega Man X]]'' series. He is a high-ranking [[Maverick Hunters|Maverick Hunter]], a dedicated warrior who fights [[Mavericks]] alongside [[X]] and [[Axl]]. Though he is secretly the greatest creation of [[Doctor Albert W. Zero's most distinctive traits are his red and white armor, a horned helmet with a blue gem on his forehead, and a long blond ponytail. His initial design in ''Mega Man X'' had spherical shoulderpads (one with a "Z" symbol), two green gems on his chest, a white codpiece, and white kneepads and toes. This was an incomplete version of his design by Dr. Wily, as Zero was left unfinished when he was sealed in his capsule.<ref name=":0" /> Zero's official height is around 175 cm (5' 9"), being slightly taller than X, though his exact height seems to vary in some appearances.<ref>[[Ferham]] [[:File:CM FerhamConcept.jpg|concept art]], ''Mega Man X: Command Mission''.</ref>

  +
When Zero was reconstructed by [[Serges]] of the [[X-Hunters]], his body received several upgrades that completed his design. His shoulders gained reinforced rectangular shoulder plates, along with improved arm guards, new dash thrusters and golden accents on his legs, and thicker chest armor. A small pack was also added to his back to store his [[Z-Saber]] when not in use.
{{Nihongo|'''Zero'''|ゼロ|}} is one of the three main characters of the ''[[Mega Man X (series)| Mega Man X]]'' series, the main protagonist of the ''[[Mega Man Zero (series)|Mega Man Zero]]'' series, and an important supporting character in the ''[[Mega Man ZX (series)|Mega Man ZX]]'' series as the [[Biometal]] [[Model Z]]. He is the successor of [[Bass]] and the greatest creation of [[Doctor Albert W. Wily]]. A high ranking [[Maverick Hunters|Maverick Hunter]] in the ''X'' series, and a legendary freedom fighter in the ''Zero'' series, he's a die hard warrior who doesn't hesitate to take action. However, behind his cold and emotionless attitude lies a wounded soul.

ZeroNoHelmet.jpg|Concept art by [[Keiji Inafune]] of Zero with no helmet, drawn for Bandai's Mega Armor figures.
Zero prominently sports a red color scheme. In his first appearance, Zero's armor was round for the most part with a red, black and white color scheme and white shoulder guards with a stylized "Z" insignia on his left shoulder. His helmet is horned and features a sharp blue crystal in contrast to his partner, [[Mega Man X (character)|X]]'s smoother red gem. Perhaps his most striking feature is his long blond hair that flowed freely about, making Zero appear fiery in comparison to X's more cool and consistent blue scheme.

  +
Zero has never been seen without his helmet in official media. In the [[Bandai]] [[Mega Armor]] series of figures, Zero's head has no hair and his ponytail is merely attached to his nape. Alternatively, the ''[[Rockman X (manga)|Rockman X]]'' manga frequently shows Zero without his helmet, giving him a full head of blond hair. This was addressed in U-Capcom, which admitted that the series designers have differing ideas of how Zero's hair should look and there is no clear answer to the matter.<ref>'''Matsue:''' "So this question finally came.... When it comes to their heads, very few within the staff know the answer. It's not like all staff know all about the series. Can't elucidate any further yet. Some of the makers say that it's "fluffy", other says it's "dry", others say it's "messy". Maybe there's discussions, arguing "can't that hair be made more stiff"?... or maybe not." - [https://web.archive.org/web/20051216040119/http://www.capcom-fc.com/staffroom/archives/2005/08/x_2.html ''Rockman X8'': Rockman Series Greetings, Introduction No. 3. U-Capcom.] (Archive, translated)</ref>
When Serges of the X-Hunters reconstructed Zero's parts, he upgraded the body, including reinforced shoulder plates and Z-Saber. Other enhancements were the improved arm guards (in contrast to the original streamlined ones) and leg joints, with improved mid-air dash thrusters and gold-plated covers, along with thicker and bigger chest armor. A small "backpack" device is also added as both storage and recharging unit for the Z-saber. The first version of Zero was apparently just an "incomplete" prototype, since this version is the outline shown in the blueprints in ''The Power Fighters''.

  +
In ''Mega Man X8'', Zero received the most minor redesign out of the cast. Some changes included shortened helmet horns, a less bushy ponytail, white heels, and an indent at the top of his codpiece.
Like X, Zero's power source is solar energy. His body material is comprised of a Titanium Z alloy, and is equipped with peculiar mechanisms called the Z-Brain (the head lens) and the Z-Heart (the chest lens), which conceal an unknown power.<ref>[[Rockman X4 Saikyou Daizukan]], page 77</ref>

Due to the artist character designer change in the ''Mega Man Zero'' series, Zero is given a design overhaul. His armor is lighter and more humanoid, and he's given a more streamlined helmet to present a much sleeker look. Unlike his previous form, Zero's arms cannot change into a buster form and instead keeps his weapons holstered around his body. The body Zero has in the Zero series is a brighter red than his original body exhibits.

==Personality==

==Personality==
  +
Outwardly, Zero is a somewhat cold individual, and a ruthless Maverick Hunter. He constantly keeps his cool, even in times of crisis. He is also very straightforward and down-to-earth, often sarcastically snapping back at the unpleasantries of Mavericks and destroying them without entertaining their philosophies or taunts.
Prior to his encounter with Sigma and becoming a Maverick Hunter, Zero was extremely violent, maniacal and relished in destruction, due to a programming bug in him during Wily's creation of him.{Citation|program bug}} He often unleashed feral screams and often laughed psychotically, especially during his battle with Sigma.

  +
Despite this, Zero truly does have the capacity to care for others. He is very protective of his allies, such as X and the Maverick Hunters, going to great lengths to ensure their safety. He has a great distaste for the deaths of innocents. He will even disregard his own safety, sacrificing himself, to save others, such as during the battle with Vile in ''Mega Man X'' and willingly piloting the shuttle into the Eurasia colony in ''Mega Man X5''. His care for others was detrimental during the Great Repliforce War, where he was forced to face his friends, Iris and Colonel, and their deaths at his hands caused him great emotional turmoil.
Outwardly, Zero appears cold and emotionless to others, even towards partners X and [[Axl]]. However, it is shown that he has the capacity to care for others. Zero keeps his cool under most circumstances. No matter what his enemies do to him, he is always able to come up with a retort.

  +
Even though Zero does not openly show it, he too seems to long for peace between humans and Reploids. However, he has said that he doesn't have any problems fighting, unlike his more pacifistic friend, X. Zero initially acted as something like a mentor to X, understanding his latent potential and even helping him unleash it. As X grew stronger, Zero gained more respect for him, seeing him as an even greater Maverick Hunter than himself. Even then, he still remains a voice of reason who helps ground X and overcome his doubts. Zero again acted the mentor upon meeting Axl. Though their relationship was tenuous at first, due to Zero being exasperated by Axl's enthusiasm and criminal background, he came to respect him as well while still playfully teasing him.
In spite of not viewing himself as a hero, Zero has often displayed a tendency to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. He also shows distaste for innocent deaths. This is evidenced in his fighting against Neo Arcadia's ruthless policy against [[Reploid]]s in the ''Zero'' series; he even personally promised to [[Sage Harpuia]] that no more Resistance soldiers would come to harm as long as he was around.

  +
Zero's original persona was much different. He was a violent, disobedient, and uncontrollable Maverick, which was the original reason his creator Dr. Wily sealed him away in a capsule.<ref name=":0" /> Upon being released from his capsule, Zero went on a rampage; he often made feral screams and laughed psychotically, and took great pleasure in tearing apart Sigma and his comrades. In the non-canon ending of ''Mega Man X2'', Zero briefly becomes a Maverick again and attacks X in a rage.<ref>'''Sigma:''' "Look who I found wandering around Mega Man! My friend here has a small problem with you. It seems that you let [Zero] die and he's not too happy about that! Now I think it is time that he repays the favor!" - ''Mega Man X2''</ref> However, Zero also has an even darker persona, the one that Dr. Wily intended for him, and which can be awakened in Zero through sufficient exposure to [[Maverick Virus|Maverick Viruses]] capable of doing so.<ref>'''Sigma:''' "I met [[Dr. Wily|an old man]] who knows a lot about you... He told me an interesting story. He told me that you are something far greater than what you appear to be... On his advice, I scattered the Virus so that it could infiltrate you, but you haven't shown any signs of waking up..."
Even though Zero does not openly show it, he, too, seems to long for peace between humans and Reploids. However, he has said that he doesn't have any problems fighting, unlike his more pacifistic friend, X; whether his enemy is a Maverick or a human, he will fight at his best. Another notable trait of his is that, despite his great power, Zero views X as the superior Maverick Hunter and considers him a hero, though he doesn't see himself as such. A prime example of this show of respect was in Zero's ending in ''[[Mega Man X6]]'': when the [[List of minor characters#Mysterious Scientist|scientist]] who was performing his sealing process asked what would happen if the world faced another crisis; Zero firmly said that the world is in good hands (X's), even when he's gone.

  +
'''Zero:''' "I won't become a Maverick! I won't yield to your pitiful virus!"
In the ''Zero'' series, his personality remains mostly the same, though with some changes. Given that he's been in stasis, he is ignorant of some matters and confused about others, sometimes to the point he starts doubting or believing that he can't win. This is seen a couple of times. First when Ciel was kidnapped by a Golem and he was battling him with his Buster which was not doing too much damage, was slowly starting to lose hope until X gave him his Z-Saber back or when Dr. Weil told him he was a copy, which made him believe he was not Zero, until X claimed he was indeed Zero, swapping roles with X in where X is the one that encourages him to fight instead of the other way around as it used to be during the ''X'' series.

  +
'''Sigma:''' "Hee hee hee. You don't seem to understand. I'm not talking about becoming a Maverick. You felt it, didn't you. You felt a tremendous power fill your body... A power from the Virus. That is because the Virus purifies your body." - ''Mega Man X5''</ref> In the bad ending of ''Mega Man X5'', Zero's "[[Awakened Zero|true self]]" awakens, which is just as misanthropic as his Maverick self but with a degree more self-control and absolute obedience to Wily's will.<ref>'''Zero:''' "My mind is becoming very clear... as though I have known everything... I don't care about the Mavericks anymore... All I have to do is one thing..."
==Character History==

===Origin===

[[File:Wily's Zero.png|thumb|Zero revealed in Bass' ending in ''Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters''.]]

Zero was created by the late Dr. Albert Wily sometime in the early twenty-first century. Wily alluded to him during [[Bass]]'s ending in ''[[Mega Man: The Power Battle]]'', where he mentioned he was developing a robot that will blow away both Mega Man and Bass. Schematic blueprints of his body were seen during Bass's ending in ''[[Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters]]''. Learning from his past mistakes, including the accidental creation of [[Bassnium]] and his construction of Bass and [[King]], Wily constructed Zero as a far more advanced robot than anything he had ever built before, with a power level far superior to that of Bass or Mega Man. He also presumably began to create the [[Maverick Virus]] around this time. Wily even dubbed Zero his "greatest masterpiece". Zero contained a flaw in his cognitive program that made him violent and unwilling to obey instructions. Because of this, Wily decided to seal him in a capsule.<ref>[http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/04/09/does-the-rockman-zero-collection-storyline-explain-everything/ Story summary from Rockman Zero Collection official site translated by TMMN.]</ref> Decades later, in the early twenty-second century, his hiding place was found by a group of Reploids prior to the first ''Mega Man X ''game.

  +
'''X:''' "Zero... you are Zero, aren't you...?"
[[File:Zeroconstruction.PNG|thumb|left|270px|Zero under construction in Wily's lab.]]

Once awakened by this group, Zero destroyed them, as well as any intruders who would dare enter Wily's lair. Labelled a Maverick (by the definition of being a threat to humans), Zero was later cornered by Maverick Hunter Elite, [[List of minor characters#Gamma's unit|Gamma's Maverick Hunter unit]], inside an unknown facility—at the cost of the total loss of said unit, however. Not wanting to get any more comrades endangered by the powerful enigmatic Maverick, then-Hunter Commander [[Sigma]] himself challenged Zero in a one-on-one battle. Even though Zero eventually gained the upper hand during the battle, Sigma was able to defeat the red Maverick after the gem on Zero's head began to glow with a 'W' symbol, apparently causing Zero great pain.

[[File:Zero&Sigma.PNG|thumb|right|270px|The fateful battle between Sigma and Zero.]]

Sigma punched this crystal, shattering it and defeating Zero. As both Zero and Sigma were in close proximity to the former's capsule when they fought, which contained the [[Maverick Virus]], Sigma and Zero were consequentially infected with the virus. Zero was then brought to [[Dr. Cain]], who analyzed him. After that, he recovered from his battle with Sigma and was placed under Sigma's watch. Zero did not show any more signs of Maverick behavior and was enlisted into the Maverick Hunters' 17th Elite Unit.

  +
'''Zero:''' "Hmm...Yes...The energy readings are still the same...and there is no Maverick reading, is there... You are reading my normal data. This is the true form of me..."
===[[Maverick Wars]] era===

====''[[The Day of Σ]]''====

As part of the 17th Elite Unit, Zero became an excellent Maverick Hunter and was soon ranked A-Class, the highest rank the Maverick Hunters had to offer at that point of time. It was during that time in which he met X for the first time who was also part of the 17th Unit, even though he was only ranked B-Class due to his hesitation on the battlefield. The two became friends and partners and worked together whenever they could. Zero soon became somewhat of a mentor to X.

  +
'''X:''' "It seems so... The data readings...... are the same as Zero used to be...still... You are not visible and cannot be analyzed correctly as data. You taught me that, Zero. I feel something evil within you...! Something evil similar to Sigma... Or should I say something more evil than Sigma!"</ref>
Soon afterwards, a series of [[Mechaniloid]]s going berserk occurred in Abel City, the city in which the Hunter Base at that point was located. During the course of the investigation, it was Zero who eventually uncovered the identity of the person responsible for the attacks, which was none other than Sigma himself. Zero realized this after analyzing various locations which were seemly connected to the attacks, and by looking over the bodies of defeated Reploids, which were all taken down with a single blow directed at a weak spot. There had been only a very few number of Reploids with such perfect skills, including Sigma. The blows that the defeated Reploids had taken was caused by a beam saber, and not by range-weapons, which ruled out the previously suspected [[Vile]].

  +
==History==
Even though Zero managed to block Sigma's first attack, he was soon overwhelmed and was used to goad X into attempting to kill Sigma, which would have killed Zero in the process, to see whether X really could hesitate. Upon seeing that X indeed does hesitate, Sigma slashed Zero with his beam saber and left him while he held X captive and launched a missile attack on Abel City. Some time later, Zero regained conscious and found X all alone in the facility, heavily damaged. He then brought him back to Hunter HQ.

Zero was created by [[Dr. Albert Wily]] sometime in 20XX. Though debatably canon,<ref name="CFC1">[http://kobun20.interordi.com/2011/03/07/ultimate-justice-on-parallel-earths/ The Reploid Research Lavatory-Ultimate Justice on Parallel Earths]</ref> Wily first alluded to the construction of Zero in Bass' ending in ''[[Mega Man: The Power Battle]]'', describing him as a new robot to surpass both [[Bass]] and [[Mega Man]].<ref>Dr. Wily: "Yeah right. You can battle with Megaman all you want. The robot I'm making right now will blow the both of you away." - Bass ending, ''Mega Man: The Power Battle''</ref> Wily showed a glimpse of Zero to Bass in his ending in ''[[Mega Man: The Power Battle|Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters]]'', where a silhouette of his body can be seen. Learning from his past mistakes, including the accidental creation of [[Bassnium]] and his construction of Bass and [[King]], Wily had constructed Zero as a far more advanced robot than anything he had ever built before.<ref>'''Dr. Wily:''' "I studied Megaman hoping to create a similar robot. Then I developed a powerful energy called "Bassnium" purely by accident. Thus, I created you Bass. Currently Bassnium is the most powerful energy on Earth. But, that's not for long. Hee hee, I've learned from my accident... And I've created a new type of robot which is much more powerful than you or Megaman! It'll be some time before I complete this project though. You better get ready!" - Bass ending, ''Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters''</ref> He allegedly used [[Proto Man]] as a starting reference for Zero's design.<ref>[http://www.themmnetwork.com/blog/2018/2/12/there-were-originally-24-maverick-hunter-units-and-other-mega-man-x-tidbits There Were Originally 24 Maverick Hunter Units, and Other Mega Man X Tidbits (Updated).]</ref> Ultimately, Wily's goal for this robot was to seek and destroy [[Dr. Light]]'s final work on [[X]], and to also spread another evil creation, the [[Maverick Virus]], to ensure the future would remain in chaos.<ref>'''Dr. Wily:''' "After him! After Sigma's declaration of Reploid Independence on July 4 21XX (June in the US manual of the original game), dubbed ''"The Day of Σ"'', Zero, who at that point was the highest-ranked member of the Hunter organization, became the new leader, and he and a repaired X fought together against Sigma's rebellion. Zero saved X during a Maverick attack at the Central Highway from Vile. In Maverick Hunter X, Zero also responded to Vile's question about why Zero would aid a B-Class Hunter like X by informing Vile that he's nothing more than a Maverick at the present. After that, the two split up, with X's task to slow down the Maverick activities in nearby areas while Zero himself was on recon duty at Sigma's fortress.

  +
However, Zero contained a flaw in his cognitive program that made him violently disobedient. Because of this, Wily planned to flush Zero's mind using the Maverick Virus, but ran out of time as he neared the end of his life.<ref name=":0">[http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/04/09/does-the-rockman-zero-collection-storyline-explain-everything/ Story summary from Rockman Zero Collection official site translated by TMMN.]</ref> With both Zero and the Maverick Virus unfinished, Wily sealed them away in a hidden laboratory.<ref name="wilyvirus">[http://www.themmnetwork.com/blog/2018/2/12/there-were-originally-24-maverick-hunter-units-and-other-mega-man-x-tidbits The Mega Man Network: There Were Originally 24 Maverick Hunter Units, and Other Mega Man X Tidbits (Updated)]</ref>
They eventually rendezvoused at the outskirts and together invaded the fortress. Here, they encountered Vile for a second time. Zero was captured by Vile and imprisoned in a cage (in ''Maverick Hunter X'' however, Zero was left unconscious by Vile as bait for X). When X was also defeated by Vile, Zero managed to break free (or regain consciousness, as was the case in ''Maverick Hunter X'') and destroyed Vile's armor by firing a charge shot from point-blank range, which was a successful, yet fatal action. Afterwards, Zero handed his Buster Parts to X (only in case X hadn't obtained the Buster Upgrade from the [[Light Capsule]]) and encouraged him to continue to fight before ultimately dying in X's arms (Maverick Hunter X also has Zero remarking on the irony of his actions in saving X leading to his death when he earlier told X not to be so careless<ref>X: Zero! Hang in there, buddy! // ZERO: X... I'm always telling you... to be more careful... but now look at me...</ref>).

+
==== Awakening ====
  +
[[File:Zeroconstruction.PNG|thumb|left|200x200px|Zero under construction in Dr. Wily's lab.]]
In Vile Mode, unlocked by completing the main game in ''Maverick Hunter X'', Zero's characterization was similar to the main game, including saving X from Vile. However, instead of chasing Vile off, Zero instead retreats with an injured X. X and Zero later reappears as the final bosses at Sigma's Palace Stage 3, where he learns that Vile is in fact working against Sigma as well as fighting X and Zero. He ends up severely injured by Vile, although he eventually managed to sneak up and grab Vile's leg and pin him before he could deliver the final blow against X, also referring to Vile's earlier rant about X "changing the world" as "maverick talk," also grounding Vile so he'd be caught in X's charge shot. It is unknown if Zero managed to survive the charge shot that critically wounded Vile, or if, like in the main game, Zero also ended up destroyed in a sacrificial effort to help bring Vile down.

In the following century of 21XX, prior to the first ''Mega Man X,'' Zero's location was discovered by by a group of Reploids. Presumably, his storage was within close proximity of the place where X was stored too.<ref>Alia mentions that [[Ground Scaravich]] when he was destroyed had been sent by Gate to a forbidden area, and specifies that it was the same place that "you both" were discovered, referring to X and Zero, in ''Mega Man X6''.</ref> Once awakened by this group, Zero destroyed them, as well as any further intruders who would enter the lair. Labelled a Maverick (by the definition of being a threat to humans), Zero was later cornered by Maverick Hunters inside, and Zero destroyed [[List of minor characters#Garma's unit|Garma's unit]]. Not wanting more comrades endangered by the mysterious Maverick, then-17th Elite Unit commander [[Sigma]] challenged Zero in a one-on-one battle. Even though Zero eventually gained the upper hand during the battle, Sigma was able to defeat the red Maverick after the gem on Zero's head began to glow with a 'W' symbol, apparently causing Zero great pain.

'''Zero:''' "Don't worry. I must do it before it's too late."
After Sigma's defeat, the Hunters tried to salvage whatever remained of Zero from the sunken fortress and found Zero's control chip (which serves as Zero's "brain" and consciousness) which had miraculously survived the destruction of the body. However, the Hunters were incapable of creating a new body for Zero because they were unable to analyze his unique body structure.

'''Mystery Scientist:''' "But you haven't had any problems yet... You'll be fine as you are, won't you? It's none of my business, but what will we do in a crisis without you?"
Six months later, a group of three Mavericks, calling themselves the "[[X-Hunters]]" (Counter Hunters in Japan), contacted the Maverick Hunters and claimed to be in possession of all of the rest of the parts that would be required to rebuild Zero. Although the American translation of the game fails to reveal how the X-Hunters gained the parts, the Japanese version elaborates with the claim that [[Serges]] (Sagesse in Japan) built them. The X-Hunters challenged X to a battle in order to win Zero's parts.

The virus actually originated from one of the circuits that Dr. Light installed in X's brain. The circuit's function was to keep X neutral and unbiased in matters concerning humans and Reploids. Tragically, the very same circuit condemned X to a life plagued by the philosophical question that weighed the value of humans against that of Reploids - a question to which there was no answer. Zero was the first Reploid to be infected by the virus, but as an android created solely for evil, destructive purposes by Dr. Wily, the virus affected him uniquely. Instead of going Maverick, the virus turned Zero into a warrior driven by goodness, not evil. Unfortunately, by tirelessly fulfilling his destiny as a Maverick Hunter, Zero inadvertently spread the virus throughout the world. Eventually, as the host of the virus, Zero was taken to a research facility for study. -- Page 174, ''[[Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works]]'', The three keys to solving the mystery of Zero and Omega (The book notes that this information comes from early concept phases, and therefore may not be canonical)</ref>
X, who didn't want his friend in the hands of Mavericks, accepted and eventually recovered Zero's head, body, and foot parts. Eventually, Zero was reconstructed by Dr. Cain (now complete with his signature Z-Saber and enforced shoulder plates) and assisted X in destroying the base of the resurrected Sigma. Trying to fool X however, Sigma had constructed a doppelganger of Zero with Black Armor which he claimed to be Zero; however, this copy was destroyed by the real Zero. This is the canon ending. In the Japanese version of the game, Sigma mentions just before his death that Zero is the last of "Wi...numbers", giving the first hint that Zero is the last of the "Wily numbers", or advanced robots built by Dr. Wily.

After Sigma declared his Reploid rebellion on June 4, 21XX, Zero was made the de facto leader of the Maverick Hunters due to being the highest-ranked Hunter who hadn't joined Sigma at the time. Additionally, Zero was approached by [[X]], who sought to help fight the Maverick uprising despite not being a Maverick Hunter. Zero allowed X to join him on the battlefield.<ref>"The Journal of Dr. Cain", ''Mega Man X'' instruction manual, 1993. Page 10.</ref>

While fighting Mavericks on the [[Highway Stage|Highway]], Zero found X at the mercy of [[Vile]] and came to his rescue, blasting the arm off Vile's [[Ride Armor]]. Zero threatened to finish Vile, forcing him to flee onto the [[Death Rogumer]]. X lamented that he wasn't powerful enough to defeat the Mavericks, but Zero assured him that he had the potential to grow through battles, and over time, he would become more powerful than himself (almost everything in their conversation was mistranslated in the English version of the game). He then suggested X to continue suppressing Sigma's rebellion (this was in order for X to grow), while he performed reconnaissance to locate Sigma's new fortress.<ref>Highway Stage, ''Mega Man X''. 1993.</ref>

  +
Once X had defeated the eight former Maverick Hunters, Zero announced that he had discovered [[Sigma's Hideout (Mega Man X)|Sigma's Hideout]] and that he was ready to storm it whenever X was. The two then rendezvoused at the floating fortress' launch site, with Zero taking the brunt of the fire while X found a safer way into the base behind him. Once in the fortress, the pair encountered Vile; worried about X, Zero decided to take him on alone. However, he was overpowered by Vile's new Ride Armor and placed in a cage. When X entered the room, Zero encouraged X to fight Vile, but the rookie Hunter was defeated. Desperate, Zero mustered the last of his power and broke out of his cage, overloading his [[Z-Buster]] on the back of the Ride Armor to destroy it - however, he gravely wounded himself in the process.
As a non-canon scenario in the game, if X couldn't retrieve all of Zero's parts, the X-Hunters would steal any parts X had previously collected from the Hunter Base, as well as Zero's control chip. Zero would then be reconstructed by Sigma as a Maverick and was fought by X prior to his encounter with Sigma. After being defeated, Zero would regain his consciousness and assist in destroying the base. His weakness in this battle is the [[Speed Burner]].

Zero laid on the ground, bisected at the waist, until X finally destroyed Vile and rushed to his side. Zero admitted that he was no longer able to fight and entrusted defeating Sigma to X.

Zero played only a minor role in the story of this game. After X managed to escape the digitized version of the Central Highway, Zero would inform him that Mavericks had hacked the Maverick Hunters' Mother Computer, stealing and corrupting data and allowing other Mavericks to run wild everywhere. While X was digitized again and sent back into the Mother Computer to destroy the protection systems that were needed to be taken out to shut the computer down, Zero would handle Maverick attacks in the real world. Also, later during the game, X would be able to find four capsules within the digitized areas, the Zero Scrambles, which allowed him to "summon" Zero to perform an attack or move. However, this was only combat data of Zero and not the real one.

The beginning of the Doppler incident finds Zero and X back in their respective commands of the Maverick Hunter Forces. [[Dr. Doppler]]'s Mavericks lead an attack on the [[Hunter Base]], and X and Zero are forced to return to the base to defend it. Zero joins the Hunters defending the base outside while X ventures into the base. However, when X is captured by the defector, [[Mac]], Zero immediately leaps into the chaos inside the base to save his best friend from the traitor's clutches, being a playable character for the first time. Zero's default weapon is the [[Z-Buster]], however, upon fully charging until he turns green, he will unleash 2 fully charged shots followed by a devastating blow with his other weapon, the Z-Saber.

  +
* If X hadn't found the Arm Parts, he would say X had become a lot stronger, but he still had doubt it would have been enough to defeat Sigma. He then requested X to take his Arm Buster<ref>Sigma Stage 1, ''Mega Man X''. 1993.</ref> to improve his fire power, and hope he will master it. He then said "See ya, X... I'm counting on you..." as his consciousness was fading.
After completing the Opening Stage, the player can call on Zero anytime by pressing the R-button in the Start Menu, however, Zero adheres to a certain set of rules. He is only able to manuever through regular parts of the stage and will automatically be replaced by X upon reaching a gate before a boss or sub-boss. The player also cannot die in game as Zero. If Zero dies, a cutscene will appear where Zero will talk about being damaged and will be unusable for the rest of the game, however he will still appear in the Doppler Stages to assist X during a sub-boss encounter, taking care of a booby-trap while X destroys the [[REX-2000]].

There is also a secret in game that will allow X to acquire Zero's Z-Saber. If during completion of the game the player locates Vile through a teleporter located in either [[Crush Crawfish]]'s stage, [[Volt Catfish]]'s stage, or [[Blizzard Buffalo]]'s stage and defeats him with one (or both) the [[Spinning Blade]] and [[Ray Splasher]], Vile will be destroyed, changing the final boss of the second Doppler Stage as well as affecting the level throughout. Upon entering the 2nd Doppler Stage, the player will notice that the [[Head Gunner]]s are now customized and are twice as difficult to defeat. If the player switch to Zero before entering one of the boss chambers which is normally an empty hallway, a robot called [[Mosquitus]] will appear, the only sub-boss that Zero can battle. This enemy is actually very easy to dispatch, however, when defeated, it will crash-land on top of Zero and explode. X will then return and Zero will explain that a few of his power cells have been damaged. He will then hand over his Z-Saber to X and then head back to Hunter HQ for repair. Note that this has the same effect in game as dying with Zero, except that if X leave the game and return, Zero will not reappear within the Doppler Stages as he does when recovering from a standard in-game death. It is also worth noting that if leaving the game and returning with a password, Mosquitus will still appear for X to defeat.

  +
Zero's role in the remake's ''Maverick Hunter X'' continuity remains mostly unchanged. Because X is already a B-Class Hunter at the beginning of the story, the two are much more familiar with each other. Zero also appears as a [[X and Zero (Mega Man Maverick Hunter X boss)|boss]] alongside X in the non-canon Vile Mode, and he plays a large role in the included OVA ''[[The Day of Σ]].''
====''[[Mega Man Xtreme 2]]''====

Zero paired up with X to investigate the resurgence of previously retired Mavericks. Technically speaking, this is the first time Zero can fight bosses. It also introduced his famous three hit saber combo, as well as his ability to learn special techniques as opposed to weapons. He battled [[Gareth]], partner of [[Berkana]], who was reviving the dead Mavericks. Afterwards, Zero aided X in the final battle against the resurrected Sigma.

After Sigma's defeat, the Hunters tried to salvage whatever remained of Zero from the sunken fortress and found Zero's control chip, which had miraculously survived the destruction of his body. However, the Hunters were incapable of creating a new body for Zero because they were unable to replicate his unique specs.
Zero's first appearance as a fully controllable character with his own story also marked the most tragic point in his life. At the beginning of the game, Zero encountered his creator within his dreams, who ordered him to finally obey his orders and fulfill his destiny by destroying his nemesis. When he awakened from the nightmare (which is implied to have happened before), he was immediately dispatched to the Sky Lagoon colony which had been attacked by Mavericks. [[Repliforce]] was also confronted at the scene, claiming to assist the Hunters in evacuating the city; however, both factions didn't trust each other, and, as a request for interrogation was declined, the Great Repliforce War broke out.

  +
Six months later, three Maverick leaders known as the [[X-Hunters]] contacted the Maverick Hunters, claiming to be in possession of three rebuilt fragments of Zero's body. Although the American translation fails to reveal how the X-Hunters obtained the parts, the Japanese version elaborates that [[Serges]] made them, as they were additions that had been previously planned by Dr. Wily (including his [[Z-Saber]]). The X-Hunters challenged X to a series of duels over Zero's parts - if X fails to defeat them all, they eventually storm [[Hunter Base]] and steal Zero's control chip by force.
[[File:Zerovscolonel.PNG|thumb|left|250px|The battle between Zero and Colonel is interrupted by Iris.]]

When the Repliforce was labeled Maverick after the Sky Lagoon incident, both X and Zero were assigned different missions to gather information about Repliforce's coup and to cut off their support lines. [[Iris]] assisted Zero on his missions as his operator, like during the Erasure incident from ''Mega Man Xtreme 2''. However, Iris herself was part of Repliforce while her brother, [[Colonel]], was Repliforce's second-in-command and therefore an imminent target for the Maverick Hunters. Iris didn't want the two of them to fight, torn between her care for Zero and her love for her own brother. When the two of them battled in the Ceremony Hall of Repliforce's command center, it was Iris who stopped the two Reploids from terminating each other by begging her own brother to stop since Zero had previously saved her life after the Sky Lagoon had crashed down. Colonel, who had always regarded Zero as a friendly rival, backed off. Zero, on the other hand, stated that someone had to stop Repliforce at all costs, much to Iris' grief.

  +
The next time Zero appears can change based on the player's actions:
When Repliforce's coup began, Zero rushed to the space port to stop the ascension of the military troops to the newly constructed space station of Repliforce, Final Weapon. There he battled Colonel, this time not holding anything back, just like his former friend, with Zero being the victor of the fight. After that, he traveled to the Final Weapon where he was, much to his surprise and horror, encountered by Iris, who was blinded by her grief of the loss of her brother and anger for Zero killing him. She had salvaged Colonel's Control Chip from his remains, fusing it with her own programming, thus resulting her body to transform into a massive [[Ride Armor]]-like combat form which Zero was forced to battle. Even though he didn't mean to, Zero damaged the exterior power core of the structure, resulting in the destruction of the armor. He hurried to Iris' body, however, it was too late to save her. Whispering to Zero that she did all this because she wanted to live in a world for Reploids only, and that he could live in that world too. She died in his arms and Zero, who was totally overthrown by the pain, began questioning his own reasons for fighting and the means of his own existence. Filled with anger, he confronted [[General]], leader of Repliforce, defeating him in battle. Upon the end of the fight, General realized that someone had taken control of Final Weapon, aiming it at Earth. Zero went to the control facility, only to find Sigma there, who revealed their pasts to him (back when Sigma was still a Maverick Hunter and Zero was first seen as a Maverick).

* If X collected all of Zero's parts from the X-Hunters, Dr. Cain reassembles Zero. He then appears before the battle with Sigma and destroys the [[Fake Zero]] for X. Sigma claims that Zero ought to be a Maverick because of his past, but Zero tells Sigma off.<ref>'''Sigma:''' "Wait, Zero! I know your secret! You were destined to follow me!"
After Zero had destroyed Sigma and the General had sacrificed his life to make the Final Weapon self-destruct, Zero escaped the destruction in a small spacecraft, thinking about what he had done. He hadn't been able to save anyone he cared about. He had killed his own friend Colonel, the General, and Repliforce with him, who in the end has only been manipulated by Sigma and the Mavericks. Most of all, he lost Iris, who he had cared about for so long. Questioning whether or not Reploids were destined to become Mavericks after all, he returned to Earth.

If the game was played by X, Zero would only appear at the very end of the story, contacting X from Hunter Base upon his return to Earth by spacecraft. X, wondering what would happen if he turned Maverick, asked Zero to take care of him if that would ever happen. Confused, Zero didn't respond to X's request, although he seemingly realized X's seriousness about the topic and the eventual battle between him and his best friend.

  +
* If X failed to collect all of Zero's parts, the X-Hunters reassemble Zero instead. He then appears as a boss before the battle with Sigma, attacking X in a rage. Once X defeats him, Zero returns to his senses and apologizes.

Either way, Zero encourages X to go after Sigma while he destroys the [[Central Computer Stage|Central Computer]], punching a hole in the floor to help X along. By the time X defeats the [[Sigma Virus]], Zero causes the Central Computer to start detonating. Before disappearing, Sigma expresses confusion as to why Zero did not become his servant, mentioning that he is "the last of the Doctor's creations."<ref>X-Hunter Stage 5, ''Mega Man X2''. 1994.</ref> Afterwards, X and Zero meet on a cliff by the sea to reminisce about the game's events.<ref>Ending cutscene, ''Mega Man X2''. 1994.</ref>

The space colony "[[Eurasia]]" was set to impact Earth, recently being coated in a large outbreak of the Maverick virus, which would cause catastrophes of unimaginable proportions. In the meantime, X and Zero faced Sigma on Earth and easily defeated him; however, Sigma lost on purpose to spread the [[Sigma Virus]] around the world. Due to this, thousands of Maverick Hunters turned Maverick, yet, the fall of the colony posed to be the bigger threat. In order to stop Eurasia's impact, X and Zero both would gather several enhancement parts to power up an old energy cannon, known as "[[Enigma]]", to destroy the colony before it could devastate the planet. While doing so, Zero noticed his strange reaction towards the Sigma Virus. While others (including X) got hurt by being surrounded by the virus, he himself actually felt energy growing inside himself; multiple infections of Sigma Virus anomalies even turned him invincible for a brief period of time. Behind the scenes, [[Lifesaver]] informed Hunter General [[Signas]] about his concerns regarding Zero, but also that there might have been a chance to develop antibodies from his DNA to cure the Maverick/Sigma Virus. Yet, the accomplishment of the Enigma was rendered priority one.

  +
===''[[Mega Man Xtreme]]''===
However, it didn't matter how much the cannon was powered up, complete destruction of the Eurasia was impossible and only delayed the impact (in the game it's possible to destroy Eurasia with only the cannon, but story-wise it didn't work). As a last resort action, a [[Space Shuttle]] was readied to be launched and directed right into the colony to have it self-destruct right at the core. The shuttle would be operated by Zero, who volunteered because he felt that the world needed X more than himself. The operation succeeded, and Zero survived; however, debris would still rain down on Earth. Zero was later rescued by the Hunters, but the peace only lasted for a short time as a new threat arose from the debris of the Eurasia.

  +
After X awoke from the cyberspace record of the Highway, Zero informed him that Mavericks had hacked the [[Mother Computer (Mega Man X)|Mother Computer]], causing digital chaos and making Mavericks run wild. While X was digitized back into the Mother Computer to stop the hack, Zero handled the Maverick attacks in the real world. Additionally, in Hard mode, X can find four capsules known as Zero Scrambles, which allow him to "summon" Zero to perform an attack or move. However, this was only combat data of Zero and not the real one.

  +
===''[[Mega Man X3]]''===
A new virus, merged from the virus inside the colony and the Sigma Virus, called the "[[Zero Virus]]" by [[Alia]], had begun to effect the impact area. The area flooded by the new virus was strangely deformed and was filled with anomalies that even resembled Zero. Also, strange Mavericks were found in the area, bosses that actually resembled earlier bosses such as the [[Shadow Devil]] and [[Rangda Bangda]]. The closer X and Zero got to the source of the virus, the higher Zero's viral infection level rose, yet he still didn't show any Maverick behavior. Not wanting Zero to become a Maverick, X would fight his friend in order to have him brought back to Hunter Base. Eventually, the battle would end in a draw (both using "Soul Body" on each other when the other thought they were winning). Upon seeing X and Zero both completely exhausted after their battle, Sigma would reveal himself to destroy them. However, Zero managed to prevent this, protecting X and himself and forcing Sigma to retreat.

By this point, Zero was made the commander of the 0th Special Unit.<ref name=":2" /> When the Maverick uprising in [[Dopple Town]] began, Zero and X were deployed to stop it - however, [[Dr. Doppler]]'s forces attacked Hunter Base in their absence, forcing them to hastily return. When X was kidnapped by the traitorous Hunter [[Mac]], Zero was forced to rescue him and kill Mac. This marked Zero's first time as a playable character, wielding his Z-Buster alongside his new Z-Saber.<ref>Opening stage, ''Mega Man X3''. 1995.</ref>
If the one who would pursue Sigma was Zero, Sigma would reveal to him that he let the colony fall on Earth solely to purify Zero's body with the virus to clear his mind and awaken his true self. Upon defeating his first form, Sigma would also reveal to Zero that he met an "Old Man" which knew a lot about Zero and his past, caring for him like a father and that it was that man's suggestion to flood Zero's body with the Virus to awaken him. After defeating his large battle body form, Sigma would then try to take X, who was still left unconscious at the scene of his battle with Zero, down with him. Zero would take most of the hit, seriously damaging him. The remains of Sigma attacked Zero and X one final time, impaling both of them through the chest area, but was then completely destroyed by Zero, who gained consciousness briefly and fired a charge shot at him from his buster.

After defending Hunter Base, Zero and X return to Dopple Town to fight Doppler's Maverick army. From here, X can call Zero to swap out anytime by pressing the R button in the Start menu; however, playing as Zero adheres to a certain set of rules. He is only able to maneuver through regular parts of the stage and will automatically be replaced by X upon reaching a boss shutter. Additionally, if the player dies even once while playing as Zero, he will be damaged and become unusable for the rest of the game.
[[File:X5anime251.gif|thumb|right|270px|The broken remains of Zero.]]

Exhausted and damaged from the battle, Zero finally realized that he was going to die, and while in a state between life and death, he began recalling memories of his creator and his true purpose of existence. Yet, his memory circuits began to cease to function. After recalling his memories of Iris and apologizing to her, Zero asked X to live for him, bringing peace to the world. After X was saved and repaired by the spirit of Dr. Light, X searched for Zero, finding nothing but his Z-Saber, which he kept in order to honor his fallen friend.

  +
Regardless of whether or not Zero has been damaged, he will automatically appear in [[Dr. Doppler's Laboratory|Doppler Stage A]] to assist X with the sub-boss [[REX-2000]]. He helps X by destroying the mechanism lowering the ceiling before departing. Later, if Zero is used to fight the optional sub-boss [[Mosquitus]] in the Doppler Stage B (available by destroying [[Vile]] with his weakness in his [[Vile Stage|secret stage]] beforehand), Zero will be damaged when the Mechaniloid crashes into him and explodes. He will then lend his Z-Saber to X while he returns to Hunter Base for repairs. If Zero is taken out of commission by Mosquitus, he will ''not'' reappear to help with the REX-2000 fight on future visits.<ref>Doppler's Lab Stages 1-3, ''Mega Man X3''. 1995.</ref>
[[File:Awakened Zero.png|thumb|left|270px|Awakened Zero.]]

As a non-canon scenario, if the Shuttle Operation was unsuccessful, the large amounts of the Colony Virus, together with the Sigma Virus Zero had already been infected with from Earth, would "awaken" Zero upon crashing on Earth, thus challenging X to a battle. His mind now cleared and caring about nothing but his mission to fight X, Maverick Zero battled X, resulting in a draw. After taking massive damage during the fight, Sigma revealed himself and prepared to destroy X. Zero, however, regained consciousness and he jumped into the line of fire, protecting X with his body, only to get mortally wounded in the process. When X destroyed Sigma in this scenario and was damaged badly, Dr. Light would appear to save him; however, Light erased X's memories of Zero and would implant a protection inside X's mind so no information about Zero would be accepted.

  +
If Zero is still active, he accompanies X into Doppler Stage D to find Sigma's new body. He suggests X face Sigma while he destroys the lab's power generator, and the two part ways. After X defeats Sigma, the Sigma Virus attempts to possess him. However, Zero appears with Dr. Doppler's vaccine integrated into his Z-Saber (In the English version, Dr. Doppler gave Zero the vaccine while in the original Japanese version, Zero found the vaccine himself) if he wasn't used in the Mosquitus fight and slashes Sigma with it (if he's not active, then a reformed Dr. Doppler uses the vaccine instead). This apparently neutralizes the Sigma Virus, allowing the two Hunters to escape the lab safely. Zero and X then stand atop a cliff outside the base, where X can't shake the feeling that one day he will have fight Zero for the sake of humanity.<ref>Ending cutscene, ''Mega Man X3''. 1995. Originally, ''X5'' was supposed to be the final game of the series and Zero getting killed would make way for the ''Zero'' series. However, ''X6'' was produced unbeknownst to Inafune and without his approval, and since the plot of ''X6'' involved Zero once again, he had to modify his ''Mega Man Zero'' concept in order to not make the story more confusing.

Zero and X are deployed to [[Laguz Island]] to investigate the mysterious [[Erasure]] phenomenon, discovering that it was perpetrated by the Soul Erasers: [[Berkana]] and [[Gareth]]. The two split up to take on the island's eight Maverick guardians before finally confronting the Soul Erasers again. They split up once more, with Zero going after Gareth while X fights Berkana. Both are successful in their respective missions, but they discover that Berkana had secretly aided in the resurrection of Sigma. Zero and X then put down Sigma together, in the process returning the souls of all the Reploids who suffered from Erasure.
Set a few weeks after the Eurasia incident, Reploid scientist [[Gate]] found a piece of Zero's body near the crash site. After tampering with Zero's data, Gate has seemingly gone mad, creating the new [[Nightmare Phenomenon#Nightmare Virus|Nightmare Virus]], a discolored clone of Zero (called "[[Zero Nightmare]]"), and the near-invulnerable Reploid, [[High Max]]. X, taking the assault on Zero's reputation personally, set out to investigate. Upon destroying the Zero Nightmare, X is reunited with his friend, mysteriously repaired and carrying a brand new Z-Saber. Together, X and Zero set out to defeat Gate and the imperfectly resurrected Sigma.

  +
The mission at Laguz Island was also the first official mission where [[Iris]], Zero's love interest, acted as his and X's operator. Zero worried that her brother, [[Colonel]] from [[Repliforce]], would be angry with him for putting her through such a difficult operation.
Who exactly repaired Zero was never directly stated. The Dr. Light capsule hologram denied knowing who repaired him. It should be noted that the reunion between X and Zero had Zero stating that he repaired himself, and hid himself away while he "healed".<ref>'''Zero:''' That is most unfortunate. I hid myself while trying to repair myself. I had to wait until I was healed. -quote from [[Mega Man X6]]</ref>

===''[[Mega Man X4]]''===
Zero's ending in this game helps to mend the storyline between the ''X'' and ''Zero'' games. It shows Zero being sealed to remove a component from his body (presumably something having to do with the virus' influence on him, and/or his original murderous persona). This was originally going to show that the ''X'' series had ended, but fans loved the series so much, Inafune was forced to continue, making many people believe that this is either a glimpse of the future, or non-canon. However, recently revealed backstory information in the Japanese [[Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works|''Mega Man Zero'' artbook]] has revealed that this ending is indeed canon, takes place in an unspecified time period beyond the last ''X'' series game, and is in fact considered the first of two different times when Zero sealed himself away (the second time being after the Elf Wars, when he sealed himself away once more in the [[Remastered Tracks Rockman Zero Telos - Drama Track Translations#Retrospect 1: Elf Wars|''Rockman Zero TELOS'' drama tracks]], and was then finally reawakened in the ''Zero'' series).

[[File:ZeroWily.PNG|thumb|right|250px|Zero encounters his creator in his nightmares.]]
  +
This game marks the first time Zero is a fully playable character, even possessing his own story separate from X's. His gameplay has also been reworked, making use of the Z-Saber instead of the Z-Buster and learning [[Zero's weaponry|Techniques]] instead of wielding [[Special Weapons]].<ref>While ''Mega Man Xtreme 2'' occurs earlier in the timeline than ''Mega Man X4'', it was actually released in 2001, four years after ''X4''<nowiki/>'s release.</ref>

  +
In Zero's story, he first encountered his mysterious creator within his dreams, who cryptically ordered him to fulfill his destiny by destroying his nemesis. When Zero awakened from the nightmare, he was immediately dispatched to the flying city [[Sky Lagoon]], which had been attacked by Mavericks. Zero ran into [[Magma Dragoon]] during the mission, but was forced to retreat as the city fell to the Earth. He then returned to investigate the crash site, discovering that Iris had been caught up in the attack. He defended her from the giant Maverick [[Eregion]], until Colonel suddenly appeared. Zero requested that Colonel disarm himself and his Repliforce men for questioning, suspicious of Repliforce's involvement in the incident, but Colonel refused and instead turned his back on Zero. Shortly afterwards, Repliforce would announce their coup d'état, resulting in the [[Great Repliforce War]] breaking out.<ref>Opening stage, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>
Alternatively, it is possible to clear ''Mega Man X6'' without ever finding Zero. In this event, cutscenes show that Zero is indeed alive, but X and the other Maverick Hunters never find him. Zero leaves on his own, stating that there's something he needs to take care of. Like the alternate ending to ''X5'', canonically, this ending does not happen.

  +
Despite his concerns about what Colonel would think, Zero was pleased to find [[Iris]] assisting him as an operator from Hunter Base, like during the Erasure incident. Iris didn't want Zero and Colonel to fight, torn between her care for Zero and her love for her own brother. Zero appreciated her concern, and with her help began fighting to stop Repliforce's plans. While doing so, he also faced several non-Repliforce-affiliated Mavericks who claimed allegiance to another power, such as the traitorous Magma Dragoon.
====''[[Mega Man X7]]''====

Zero is responsible for the bulk of the Maverick Hunter workload due to the fact that X has recently refused to battle for any reason, due to his doubts about the Hunters' violent methods (Zero seems to have some resentment towards the workload, as indicated when he says, ''"I can't believe I'm back here again!"'' in an irritated tone in his introduction). Zero captures a mysterious Reploid, [[Axl]], who has just recently abandoned the vigilante group [[Red Alert]]. Axl assists Zero in stopping Red Alert's rampages, and eventually X rejoins them. While fighting alongside Axl, Zero learns from him at least some of the details about Red Alert's downfall. After the battles, Zero has nightmares of X attacking him, out of obsession for eliminating Mavericks (possibly foreshadowing the rise of [[Copy X]] in the ''Zero'' series).

  +
[[File:Zerovscolonel.PNG|thumb|left|250px|The battle between Zero and Colonel is interrupted by Iris.]]
''X7'' signified a few changes to Zero's gameplay. His Z-Buster was eliminated altogether, and in addition to learning new attacks from defeated Mavericks, Zero can also gain other melee weapons to replace his saber. This tradition would continue through the rest of the ''Mega Man X'' series and up to the ''Mega Man Zero'' series.

  +
Eventually, Colonel challenged Zero to a duel at Repliforce's [[Memorial Hall]]; Iris begged Zero not to accept the call, but he did anyway, determined to put an end to the conflict. The two Reploids began their battle, but Iris appeared and pled with Colonel to stop, since Zero had saved her life after the Sky Lagoon's crash. Colonel, who had always regarded Zero as a friendly rival, backed off. Frustrated, Zero stated that ''someone'' had to stop Repliforce, much to Iris' grief.<ref>Colonel duel cutscene, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>

  +
When Repliforce's plan was finally put into motion, Zero rushed to the [[Space Port]] to stop the ascension of Repliforce to the newly constructed space station, [[Final Weapon]]. There Zero battled Colonel, this time not holding anything back, and regrettably destroyed him in the process. After that, he traveled to the Final Weapon where he was, much to his surprise and horror, confronted by Iris. Holding Colonel's control chip, she was now blinded by her grief for her brother and anger that Zero killed him. She then fused with Colonel's chip, resulting in the creation of a large [[Ride Armor]]-like combat form which attacked Zero. Even though he didn't mean to, Zero damaged the exterior power core of the structure, resulting in the destruction of the armor and Iris within. He hurried to Iris' body, but it was too late to save her. Whispering to Zero that she wished to live with Zero in a world of only Reploids, she died in his arms. Zero, who was totally overthrown by the pain, began questioning his own reasons for fighting and the means of his own existence.<ref>Space Port and Final Weapon 1, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>[[File:Zero Iris.png|thumb|right|250px|After the death of Iris, Zero is lost in pain.]]
====''[[Mega Man X8]]''====

Zero continues to work with X and Axl, now an official Maverick Hunter, in dealing with new threats. One of the new navigators, a purple-haired girl named [[Layer]], has shown a romantic interest in him; Zero has not returned her feelings however, simply keeping the relationship professional. Zero's memories of the virus incident from ''X5'' continue to haunt him, fueling his hatred towards Sigma. Upon confronting him, Sigma confirms that Zero is the original carrier of the Maverick Virus, which was transferred to Sigma prior to the first ''X'' game (presumably it happened when Sigma shattered Zero's head gem as depicted in ''X4'', though the unlockable animation ''The Day of Σ'' in the PSP remake has put a few doubts on this). This information was long-since stated in Japanese sourcebooks, as well as implied as early as ''X4'', but was never before made officially available to the public in other regions.

  +
Filled with anger, he confronted [[General]], the highest leader of Repliforce, defeating him in battle. Upon the end of the fight, General realized that someone had taken control of Final Weapon, aiming its main cannon at Earth. Zero rushed to the Final Weapon's control center, only to find Sigma waiting for him. Amused that he didn't remember, Sigma told Zero the story of the day they fought in Dr. Wily's laboratory, and Sigma once again reminded Zero, in a sarcastic manner, that Zero is in truth a Maverick.<ref>'''Sigma:''' "Hee hee hee. Good work, Zero!"
====''[[Mega Man X: Command Mission]]''====

In the game, Zero is sent along with X and another Reploid, [[Shadow]], to investigate Reploid uprisings in [[Giga City]]. Zero is separated from X after Shadow betrays them and was presumed dead, until he reappears some time later and attacks one of the [[Mach Jentra|rebelling Reploids]] in a [[Ulfat Factory|mechaniloid factory]]. At this point, Zero joins X, [[Axl]], and a number of other Reploids that X assembled to assist him. With Shadow's betrayal still fresh in his memory, Zero is unwilling to trust X's new friends, and promptly decides to work alone. However, one of the Reploids, [[Spider]], risks his life in Zero's defense. After this, Zero decides to rejoin X's group permanently, although Spider eventually turns on them as well and reveals himself as [[Colonel Redips]]. He had hid his true identity from the group by using a replica of Axl's DNA change, hinting toward the possibility that Spider could have actually existed at one point (since Axl needs to take DNA from a Reploid in order to change into it). Zero briefly hesitated when his allies attempted to stop Redips from using the Supra Force metal, presumably out of shock that Spider and Redips were the same and thus he was "badly duped." However, he would recover and, with the others, defeat Great Redips in the end, before returning to Earth in a broken off part of the elevator.

'''Zero:''' "You're... Sigma! ...So it was you!"
===The [[Elf Wars]]===

At some unknown point, Zero realized that he carried the virus inside him and may even be continuing to spread it all over the world during his missions as a Hunter. Thinking that the world wouldn't be safe as long as he was still active, Zero admitted himself into a research institute in order to get rid of the virus within him. At the same time, a project was started to analyze Zero as it had been revealed previously (during the Eurasia crisis to be exact), that Zero actually reacted positively to the Sigma Virus, and therefore might hold anti-bodies for the infection. Zero was sealed away and brought to a government lab. At some point, Zero's mind was extracted from the body, possibly for security measures in case something would go wrong while researching it.

  +
'''Sigma:''' "Hee hee hee. Yes! Simply brilliant! You even defeated Colonel and Iris!"
For an unknown amount of time, Zero's body was studied by government researchers. One of them, an unnamed female ancestor of [[Ciel]], managed to create the "Sigma Antibody Program", a [[Cyber-elf]] capable of reverting the devastated programming of infected Mavericks and therefore destroying the virus completely. This Cyber Elf was the [[Dark Elf|Mother Elf]].

  +
'''Zero:''' "...You made me do it!"
However, weapon researcher and DNA revival specialist [[Dr. Weil]], who also worked in the lab, planned a different way of dealing with the Mavericks, as he was unsatisfied with the result. Weil started a conflict that would ultimately cost the lives of 90% of all Reploids and 60% of all humans. This four-year-long period of war was later dubbed the "Elf Wars".

  +
'''Sigma:''' "No. You wanted to destroy them! Allow me to remind you that I was once the leader of the Maverick Hunters...
Thinking that it wasn't enough to simply cure the Reploids from the virus while they still posed a threat to society due to their free will, Weil decided to create his own, radical solution, while making himself ruler of the world in the process. Project Elpis was the end result: to create a Reploid who would become the perfect ruler, by using the power of the Mother Elf to control all the Reploids in the world, thus preventing them becoming Mavericks in the first place.

  +
'''Sigma:''' Zero! You were a Maverick?!"
However, since the world was at peace at the moment thanks to the Mother Elf, he needed to give the government a reason to sanction Project Elpis. He secretly stole the Mother Elf and reprogrammed her into the [[Dark Elf]], whose purpose was to create Maverick outbreaks by brainwashing Reploids. [[Baby Elves]], small copies of the Dark Elf, were mass-produced to cause violent Maverick outbreaks worldwide.

  +
'''Zero:''' "What's your point?! Are you that surprised?"
As new Mavericks arose and caused terror and destruction in scales never seen before, the government heeded Dr. Weil's pleas and sanctioned Project Elpis to bring this new and devastating conflict to an end. For the project he was given Zero's body, which possessed the necessary virus countermeasures for creating the perfect ruler, [[Omega]], the messiah of Dr. Weil.

  +
'''Sigma:''' "Ah... Zero! You're most impressive!"
For Omega to control all Reploids worldwide with the Mother Elf, a massive armor was constructed around Omega for the Mother Elf to fuse with it. In addition the armor also boosted Zero's body to its absolute limits and granted it the ability to regenerate any damage. Along with the armor, Omega received new weapons, suitable for his new size and weight. Unknown to everyone Omega received a new personality, which was absolutely loyal to Dr. Weil's orders. With Omega completed by fusing it with the Dark Elf, the baby elves would be redundant as they were no longer needed.

  +
'''Zero:''' "Sigma... I will defeat you!" - ''Mega Man X4''</ref> Zero then battled and defeated Sigma; General thanked Zero for his help and proceeded to sacrifice himself to stop the Final Weapon.<ref>Final Weapon stages 2-3, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>
In the fourth (and what would be the last) year of the war, Zero, in possession of a new body Ciel's ancestor created for him, would wake up so he could fight alongside X against the new threat. At some point during the conflict, which were now known as the Elf Wars, Zero reclaimed the Dark Elf from the mavericks and used her to bring the uprisings to a end.

  +
Zero escaped the destruction of the Final Weapon in a small shuttle. He pondered his own inability to protect those he cared for. He had killed his own friend Colonel, the General, and Repliforce with him, who in the end has only been manipulated by Sigma and the Mavericks. Most of all, he lost Iris, who he had cared about for so long. Questioning whether or not Reploids were destined to become Mavericks after all, he returned to Earth.<ref>Zero's ending cutscene, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>
[[File:Elfwar.jpg|thumb|300px|left|Omega during the closing period of the Elf Wars]]<br />It was then where Weil revealed his true colors and ordered Omega and a group of [[Mechaniloid]]s, similar to Neo Arcadia's later [[Golem]] models, to attack his former allies. However, because Zero reclaimed the Dark Elf in time, Omega was unable to fuse with the Dark Elf. He was defeated after a hard battle by X and Zero using the [[Final Strike]].

  +
Zero also briefly appears in the ending of X's story. X calls Zero and makes him promise to destroy him if he ever goes Maverick, but Zero finds the proposition confusing. Upon realizing how serious X is about the promise, he agrees, and X ponders their inevitable confrontation.<ref>X's ending cutscene, ''Mega Man X4''. 1997.</ref>
After the war had ended, Zero decided to seal himself away again, this time, forever. Though X tried desperately to stop his friend, the sealing process had already begun when X arrived, and could not be stopped. Before he lost consciousness, Zero told X that, as long as he was still around, the bloody history would repeat itself over and over again. Before the seal was complete, he encouraged X that this was the right way and that he wanted to believe in human kind, just as X believed in them. With these final words, Zero's seal was complete.

====''[[Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works]]'' bio====

The legendary Reploid who fought valiantly and was known as a hero during the Maverick Wars. Though the soul is indeed that of Zero, the body that Ciel found him in was a copy of the original. Zero's original body, which had caused much damage during the Elf Wars, had been sent into space, and is now known as Omega. But Zero's new body, showing at least as much if not more potential than the last, has saved the world twice over from the evil intentions of Omega and Weil, the man controlling him. Zero was last seen in space. His current whereabouts are unknown.

  +
When Zero is chosen first by the player, he is deployed to hunt down Sigma, who suddenly reappeared in the midst of a city to cause a Maverick riot. He defeats Sigma with surprising ease, revealing that it was a trap; the resulting explosion spreads a payload of the Sigma Virus across the globe. To make matters worse, the space colony [[Eurasia]] is set to impact the Earth as well, filled with a different virus, thanks to Sigma's hired gun [[Dynamo]]. The combination of perils threatens to doom the entire planet.
====''[[Mega Man Zero (video game)|Mega Man Zero]]''====

At the beginning of the game, Zero was discovered in suspended animation in an abandoned laboratory by a human scientist named [[Ciel]], who leads a band of Reploid [[Resistance]]. Ciel used the Cyber-elf Passy to revive Zero, who in turn saved Ciel from the forces of Neo Arcadia that was pursuing her and her comrades. Zero, however, was suffering memory loss due to "hibernation sickness". As it turned out, Neo Arcadia was the government of the world at this time period. Reploids were discriminated against and often deemed Maverick and terminated without justifiable cause. [[Copy X]], a ruthless, conceited weaker clone of the real X, was in charge of this policy. Zero agreed to join Ciel's cause in fighting this oppression of Reploids. Zero would then go on to defeat Copy X's 4 Guardians as well as destroying Copy X himself.

  +
The Maverick Hunters devise a plan to repel the Eurasia colony, using two options: the outdated [[Enigma]] cannon and a [[Space Shuttle]] outfitted with explosives (Zero would pilot the latter plan, due to being the best spacecraft pilot left in the Hunters). In order to get them in working condition, Zero and X are tasked with collecting the parts necessary - however, the spread of the Sigma Virus makes their potential business partners hostile and dangerous, leading to many battles. Additionally, the two are challenged to duels by Dynamo twice in an effort to hinder their progress. From here, there are several possible outcomes:
After the battle with Copy X, Zero was declared missing by the Resistance, after the Neo Arcadian Core was destroyed. In truth, Zero survived the explosion, and is traveling in the desert, continuing to fight Neo Arcadia that set its sights on him.

  +
* If Eurasia is destroyed in time, its fragments still hit the Earth but damage is mitigated. The Colony Virus mixes with the Sigma Virus to create the [[Zero Virus]], which in turn forms an underground void called [[Zero Space]].
====''[[Mega Man Zero 2]]''====

  +
* If Eurasia is not destroyed in time, it crashes into the Earth and causes borderline apocalyptic damage. Additionally, the creation of the Zero Virus not only creates Zero Space but also awakens Zero to his original Maverick nature, turning him against the Hunters. He will no longer be playable because of this development.
One year later, Zero is still traversing the harsh desert, and still hunted by Neo Arcadia. After another battle with the Neo Arcadian Forces, Zero finally succumbs to his injuries and collapses. When he wakes up, he is now in the new Resistance Base, brought there by unknown means (later revealed to be Harpuia's doing), and meets the new members, including a new commander, [[Elpizo]].

  +
[[File:Awakened Zero.png|thumb|270px|Awakened Zero.|alt=]]Either way, X and Zero enter Zero Space to pursue Sigma, who has hidden inside of it (if Zero has gone Maverick, then he hides there himself). Before reaching Sigma, however, X and Zero face each other in battle. There are several possible scenarios:
Ciel showed Zero her research on energy, the former thinking that it will give Neo Arcadia a reason not to fight them anymore. Zero tried to hold off Elpizo's [[Operation Righteous Strike]] long enough for Ciel to finish her research, but in the end Elpizo still continued his plans, and Zero had to rescue him. Although Elpizo survived, he was driven to madness by the defeat, and Zero had to spend the larger half of the game trying to find him.

  +
* If the player is X, he confronts Zero about how the latter's power has been rising in contact with the Zero Virus. He demands that Zero return to Hunter Base, but he refuses.
During the game, Zero also learned of what had happened before his sealing; Sigma and his Mavericks were defeated, but some time after the Elf Wars broke out, Zero himself helped X to end them by defeating and banishing [[Omega]], the most terrifying "Reploid" of the time. Several decades after Zero was sealed, X sacrificed his body to stop the worst Cyber-elf of all, the Dark Elf, leaving him in a more ethereal form. X's body is destroyed and the Dark Elf is released by the now-rogue Elpizo. Zero defeats Elpizo, but the Dark Elf escapes. She and Zero appear to know each other, and X informs Zero that the Dark Elf was not always known by her current name. Her powers became a threat due to a curse by Dr. Weil, the man who started the Elf Wars, at which point people began calling her the Dark Elf.

  +
* If the player is Zero, he is confronted by X (backed by two [[Lifesaver]]s) to send him back to Hunter Base for his immunity to the Zero Virus. Zero is outraged.
[[File:Chainrod.jpg|thumb|Zero using the Chain Rod.]]

  +
* If Zero has already gone Maverick, then X is met with the [[Awakened Zero]]. This Zero's mind is unclouded, and he is devoted to his destiny to destroy X.

  +
Either way, Zero and X fight to a standstill where both lay exhausted on the ground (if Zero was awakened, he returns to his senses). Sigma appears, pleased with the outcome, and Zero jumps to X's defense to repel Sigma, who departs to patiently await their inevitable confrontation.
====''[[Mega Man Zero 3]]''====

During the two-month gap between the third second games, there has apparently been a truce between Neo Arcadia and the Resistance. Ciel, having finished her energy research by creating the "CIEL system", submitted her work to Neo Arcadia, hoping to open up the chance for peace talks. In the meantime, Zero and Ciel lead a small group through a snowy mountain, as while they were trying to locate the Dark Elf (presumably to end her curse), they found another energy signature resembling the Dark Elf located there. Upon arrival at the origin of the signal, they discover an immense ship. The Neo Arcadians had roped off the ship, so Zero decides to get a closer look by sneaking in. However, upon arrival, Ciel and the rest of the group was discovered by the Neo Arcadians. they didn't seem to be killed though, thus confusing Zero. Harpuia then appears and says that he's letting them off the hook, as there's "bigger fish to fry". After Harpuia leaves, and Zero tries to figure out who the Dark Elf is and why she seemed familiar, Zero then hears a monstrous voice calling him. Upon arriving at the interior of the ship, Zero discovers that Fefnir and Leviathan, as well as their entire unit, was soundly defeated by an immense figure: Omega, the Devil Reploid. Zero then realizes that Omega was the one who called him, and they fight. Zero seems to defeat Omega and cause grievous damage, but then Omega started regenerating the wound. Harpuia then cuts in and is about to deliver the coup de grace when a mysterious man, Dr. Weil, tells Omega that he is to serve Harpuia as an ally. Copy X MK II then appears and announces that he revoked Dr. Weil's exile. Weil, Copy X, Harpuia, and Omega then depart after some discussion, although not before Weil cryptically remarks that he's interested in how well Zero will do "in that body of his."

  +
Once the two recuperate, X and Zero put their conflict behind themselves to stop Sigma (if Zero was awakened, he remains unconscious while X continues to face Sigma alone). When Zero confronts Sigma, the latter reveals that he met an "old man" who knew a lot about Zero (implied to be some form of Dr. Wily). This man helped create his newest battle body. Zero (or X) defeats him, but the explosion badly damages Zero, leaving him wounded on the ground. There are three possible endings from this path:
After a few missions, Zero and the Resistance then learn that Neo Arcadia is planning to launch a missile containing Omega into Area Z-3079, a human residential area to capture the Dark Elf. Zero infiltrates the Missile Facility and divert the missile, however, he wasn't able to stop the launch. Not wanting to just let Neo Arcadia destroy a human population just to acquire the Dark Elf, he boards the missile to destroy Omega before it arrives at its destination. Unfortunately, Dr. Weil had anticipated Zero's actions, so he had placed [[Crea and Prea]] on guard duty of Omega's chamber long before the launch. While he may have defeated them, they still bought the Omega Missile enough time to reach its target. Zero barely escapes the impact of the missile, and wakes up to see Omega absorbing the Dark Elf, and transforming. Harpuia, having been retired from his position of Neo Arcadia's military force, then attacks Omega in a last ditch effort to stop Weil and Omega, and protect humanity, even if it meant going against X. Unfortunately, thanks to Omega's absorbing the Dark Elf, Harpuia's attacks are ineffective. Zero manages to save Harpuia and himself at the last second by telling the Resistance to transport them back.

  +
[[File:X5anime251.gif|thumb|right|270px|The broken remains of Zero.]]
Neo Arcadia then contacts the Resistance base, with Copy X saying they'll call a truce under the condition that they hand over the Ciel system. However, Ciel and the Resistance declines, as she doesn't trust them due to them destroying a human settlement just to get the Dark Elf. Their refusal results in an invasion with three units coming from the desert, the forest, and the Antarctic to attack the Resistance Base. Zero manages to take down the invasion, destroying the newly resurrected [[Hanumachine]], [[Anubis Necromancess]], and [[Blizzack Staggroff]]. Afterwards, Zero infiltrates the main base of Neo Arcadia to stop the invasion once and for all. Zero fights against Copy X Mark II after a debate about how things should be done. After the battle, the original X approaches Copy X and reveals that Omega and Dr. Weil had used him to gain more power, and abandoned him. Copy X then attempts to transform into his second form, despite X's warnings about a device implanted into him, and is destroyed as a result. Dr. Weil then announces X's death to Neo Arcadia, claiming it to be the work of the Resistance, and evokes Ordinance 8 in order to become its new ruler. Zero and X then decide to go their separate ways, although not before X cryptically informed Zero that it "was the heart that matters, not the body."

  +
* If X defeated Sigma and Zero was normal, X lifts Zero's damaged remains, pleading with him not to die. Sigma's head persists behind them and fires a last-ditch laser that pierces them both. Jarred awake, Zero uses his Z-Buster to destroy Sigma as he falls to the ground, before dying himself. In the aftermath, X survives and takes up Zero's Z-Saber as the new ace of the Maverick Hunters. This ending is canon.<ref>''Mega Man X6'' opening cinematic.</ref>
After a few more missions and collecting data, Zero learns from Ciel that Dr. Weil is planning on re-enacting the Elf Wars. Unfortunately, Dr. Weil and Omega then takes control of all the Reploids on the planet once more. X, however, uses his powers to protect the Reploids in the Resistance Base from Weil's control. Zero sets off to stop Weil, tracking him down to his secret laboratory, which incidentally, was close to where Zero was found at the beginning of the series.

  +
* If Zero defeated Sigma himself, the same events occur from Zero's perspective. As he dies, Zero sees his first battle with Sigma, his own creation, Dr. Wily, and finally Iris, before he asks X to keep the world safe and passes away. This ending is presumably canon, as its events don't interfere with the previous ending.
  +
* If X defeated Sigma but Zero had gone Maverick, then Sigma destroys himself along with the unconscious Zero, leaving X alone and badly damaged. A mysterious hologram of Dr. Light then repairs X. A week later, it is revealed that X's mind has been mysteriously wiped regarding the incident, and he now has no memories of Zero at all. This ending is not canon.

  +
===''[[Mega Man X6]]''===
Zero is confronted by Omega, and the two do battle. After defeating two of Omega's forms, Zero lands with Omega's remains in the very room which he was sealed in. Weil then reveals that Zero is a fake, and that Omega is in fact the "real" Zero, and Zero's original body breaks out of the shell that was Omega's previous form. Zero, however, still defeats Omega Zero after an intense duel. When Weil attempts to heal Omega of his wounds with the Dark Elf, the remaining 3 Guardians appear and attack Omega. X himself appears alongside the Guardians, and told Zero of Weil's deception: that Omega may be using Zero's original body, but the "fake" Zero still has his real soul.

  +
A few weeks after the Eurasia incident, Reploid scientist [[Gate]] found a small piece of Zero's body near the crash site. Using the information he gathered about the Sigma Virus and Zero's [[DNA program|DNA]],<ref name=":2">''[[Compendium of Rockman X]]''</ref> Gate went mad and created the [[Nightmare Virus|Nightmare]], a discolored clone of Zero called the [[Zero Nightmare]], and the near-invulnerable Reploid [[High Max]]. This resulted in a worldwide fascination with the Nightmare, and as the investigation began, its leader [[Isoc]] blamed the "ghost of Zero" for it. After being met with this news, X took the assault on Zero's reputation personally and set out to investigate as well.

  +
[[File:X6 scene 14.jpg|thumb|270x270px|Zero reunites with X]]
So, regardless of Omega using his original body, Zero destroys him (presumably) once and for all, but Weil escapes. The Dark Elf, now free of her curse and called Mother Elf once more, roams free. However, X cannot roam in the real world any longer. Before X goes away, he tells an unconscious Zero to always protect peace between Reploids and humans, a promise Zero keeps up to heart in the next game.

  +
However, unbeknownst to anyone, Zero had been secretly making a miraculous recovery. Once X destroys the Zero Nightmare in one of the secret areas, the real Zero reveals himself and X is reunited with his friend, mysteriously repaired and carrying a brand new Z-Saber. Together, X and Zero set out to put a stop to the Nightmare. Who or what exactly repaired Zero after his apparent death in the Eurasia crisis was never directly stated.<ref>'''Zero:''' ''"I don't really remember, but when I came to, I could move... Depending on when Zero is unlocked, he can assist X in fighting the eight [[Nightmare Investigators]]. It is also possible for him to defeat High Max, which results in a confrontation with Isoc. The scientist is elated by Zero's power and encourages him to become even stronger, using a mysterious energy field to defend himself before fleeing. Later, when storming Gate's [[Secret Lab|laboratory]], Zero can also come across the body of Isoc, whose soul has left his body. Zero then hears a mysterious voice calling him the "ultimate robot" but he brushes it off and leaves to pursue the reborn Sigma.

[[File:X6 scene 51.jpg|left|thumb|270x270px|Zero about to be sealed]]
Eight months after the destruction of Omega, Neo Arcadia remained under Weil's control. After Weil began to terminate humans who opposed him, several groups of humans escaped the city that used to be their utopia. When the Resistance received knowledge of this, they immediately dispatched a team to assist and protect the refugees. Zero, along with Ciel and a few other Resistance members, intercepted an assault team of Weil's [[Variant]] drones (remodeled Mechaniloid soldiers which had replaced the [[Pantheon]]s) that attacked a refugee truck [[Caravan]]. After countering the attack, Zero and Ciel met [[Neige]], a human journalist who tried everything possible to both bring all people safely to their new refuge, [[Area Zero]], and to find out the whole truth about Weil.

  +
In X's ending, Zero is seen lamenting the unfortunate death of Gate and promising to build a utopia with the rest of the Hunters. Meanwhile, Zero's personal ending helps reconcile the storyline between the ''X'' and ''Zero'' games. It shows Zero being sealed to remove a component from his body (presumably something having to do with the Maverick Virus or his original evil nature). This was originally going to show that the ''X'' series had ended after ''X6'' in order to make way for the ''Zero'' series, but since the ''X'' series evidently continued past this point, this scene was retconned to take place in an unspecified time period beyond the final ''X'' series game.<ref>[[Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works]]. 2008.</ref>
The Variant attack, however, was just the beginning. Zero, while investigating Area Zero, encounters [[Craft]] and the [[Einherjar Eight Warriors]], who all serve directly under Dr. Weil. Craft tells Zero of [[Operation Ragnarok]], a plan to destroy all inhabitable areas outside Neo Arcadia so no one can escape Dr. Weil's rule. Zero defeats 4 of the Einherjar one by one, and then repels an attack on Area Zero by Craft himself. The latter's objective was to kidnap Neige, who was an old friend of his. Zero rescues Neige from the prison Craft took her to, but not before Neige managed to push a little of her ideals back into her old friend.

  +
Alternatively, it is possible to clear ''Mega Man X6'' without X ever finding Zero. In this event, cutscenes show that Zero is indeed alive, but X and the other Maverick Hunters never find him. Zero leaves on his own, stating that there's something he needs to take care of (presumably eliminating the Zero Nightmare). This ending is non-canon.
[[File:ZeroHelm.gif|thumb|250px|After the hero's final battle.]]

When the rest of the Einherjar Warriors are eliminated, Craft revolts against Weil and commandeers the "[[Ragnarok]]" space station, threatening to obliterate Neo Arcadia with the station's laser cannon. The Resistance immediately commences the evacuation of the city while Zero storms the space station. Despite his efforts, Zero is too late and Craft opens fire, destroying the city. Zero then engages Craft in combat and defeats him. Mortally wounded, Craft asks Zero why he continues to fight for the humans that feared him and all Reploids. Zero replies that he was obligated by a promise he has made to a [[Mega Man X (character)|friend]] and their faith in the human race. Realizing what he's done, Craft asks Zero to continue living up to that promise, before shutting down for good.

  +
===''[[Mega Man X7]]''===
All is not well, however. A second laser fired from Ragnarok alerted everyone that it was still operational, and that the station is now falling down to Earth. After going through Ragnarok's defenses to reach the core, Zero discovers Weil waiting for him. Having actually survived Ragnarok's laser fire, Weil teleported into the space station after the blast, maneuvering it to crash into Area Zero. After the first of their two battles, the space station is damaged. Ciel pleads for Zero to return to Earth, lest he get stranded due to increasing transporter interference. Seeing Weil still alive, Zero passes the offer to go back and proceeds to finish him off in their second battle, ultimately sacrificing himself as the destruction of Weil's last form causes the station to explode.

Once X retires to pursue peaceful means to end Maverick conflict, Zero takes up the bulk of the Maverick Hunters' workload. Unfortunately, the world finally being repaired after the Eurasia incident means surges in Maverick crime are more common than ever, leaving the Hunters overwhelmed. This leads to the formation of [[Red Alert]], an illegal Maverick-hunting syndicate led by the vigilante [[Red]].<ref>Opening cutscene, ''Mega Man X7''. 2003.</ref>

[[File:X7 scene04.png|thumb|270x270px|Zero taking Axl to see X.]]

When [[Axl]] flees from Red Alert and is pursued into the city by Mechaniloids, Zero heads out to put a stop to the chaos. He first meets Axl on the highway, helping him destroy his [[Mega Scorpio]] pursuer before arresting him and taking him into Hunter Base for questioning. After hearing Axl's story, the Hunters are contacted by Red, who challenges them to a Maverick hunting duel over custody of Axl. At first Zero doesn't want to get involved, and is especially befuddled when Axl insists on joining him in the field, but decides to give the young Reploid a chance to fix the mess he helped start.<ref>Opening stage, ''Mega Man X7''. 2003.</ref>

  +
As Zero and Axl fight the eight members of Red Alert, Zero gets to hear about Axl's backstory and how Red Alert had changed for the worse recently, which is why he quit in the first place. If he speaks with [[Wind Crowrang]], he also learns that someone affiliated with Red Alert is interested in studying his capabilities.<ref>Zero vs. Wind Crowrang cutscene, ''Mega Man X7''. 2003.</ref> When X finally decides to come out of retirement and help in the fight, Zero is relieved to see his old friend back in action.
Zero's sacrifice opens the eyes of many, finally bringing peace between the Reploids and humans left on Earth. The aftermath, however, leaves his friends grieving at his apparent death (his actual fate remains uncertain), especially Ciel, who is later inspired to pick up his work to create harmony between Reploids and humans.

  +
Upon defeating the eight members of Red Alert, Zero and the others are sent to the [[Crimson Palace]] to face Red. When Red resigns to his fate and stays behind in a self-destructing room, Zero is forced to hold Axl back lest he rush in and die too. The trio soon learns that Sigma is indeed behind Red Alert's Maverick actions, which Zero finds unsurprising. Sigma boasts that he will make Zero and X his servants before attacking them, but they defeat both his forms. In the aftermath, it seems as though Red has returned as he knocks down Zero and moves to give Sigma his body, but it is revealed to simply be Axl in disguise and he deals the finishing blow on Sigma. Zero is impressed by Axl's reckless tactic paying off.<ref>Crimson Palace, ''Mega Man X7''. 2003.</ref>

At some point after the ''Mega Man X'' series, Zero felt uneasy about his body's connection to the Sigma Virus. He admitted himself to a research institute, going into a coma so his body could be studied while his mind was removed for separate study. This research led to the creation of the [[Cyber-elf|Cyber-Elves]], most importantly the [[Mother Elf]]. X used the Mother Elf to erase the Sigma Virus and finally end the Maverick Wars.
  +
  +
However, a bitter [[Dr. Weil]] corrupted the Mother Elf into the Dark Elf and began the period known as the Elf Wars. Enacting his [[Project Elpizo]], Weil used Zero's body to create his ultimate weapon, [[Omega]]. Fortunately, the research institute was able to create a replica of Zero's old body to place his mind in. Now in an identical new body, Zero was awoken to assist X in the Elf Wars, and together they defeated Weil and Omega. As a result, Weil was cursed with a regenerative armor and exiled, while Omega was locked in the [[Forbidden Ark]] in orbit.

After the Elf Wars, Zero chose to return to stasis, convinced that the world was in good hands with X's protection. Zero returns as [[Biometal]] [[Model Z]], which contains the "[[DNA Soul|soul]]" of Zero. Omega also appears as an optional boss in Area N-1. Defeating him in Normal or Hard will grant access to a stone artifact which gives the player [[Model O]]. Although Biometal Model Z is not usable by itself, it can be combined with Biometal [[Model X]] to form Model ZX, the title character.

[[File:Biometal Z.png|thumb|70px|Biometal Model Z]]
Zero appears in a flashback scene in [[Vent]]'s story, where [[Prairie]] explains that her sister was a human (obviously referring to Ciel) that defended the Reploids. The scene then shifts to a view of [[File:Ciel And Zero.png|thumb|left|Ciel and Zero was seen in ''Mega Man ZX''. (Vent's cutsene after fighting against Prometheus.)]]Zero and Ciel looking at an army of Pantheons. Zero is mentioned when (again in Vent's storyline) Prairie explains that [[Model W]] is the spirit of Dr. Weil, and that the last time Dr. Weil had appeared, he was stopped by Zero (although the game never addresses Zero by name, simply calling him "a hero").

  +
Centuries after the ''Mega Man Zero'' series, Zero returns in the ''[[Mega Man ZX (series)|Mega Man ZX]]'' series as [[Biometal]] [[Model Z]], which contains the essence of Zero. It is initially in the possession of [[Girouette]], before he passes it on to [[Vent]]/[[Aile]]. Although Model Z is not playable by itself, the player combines it with [[Model X]] to form the eponymous [[Model ZX]]. Model Z's fate at the end of ''[[Mega Man ZX Advent]]'' is left ambiguous, as it stayed behind aboard [[Ouroboros]] to hold the rival [[Mega Man (title)|Mega Men]] at bay for Vent/Aile.

Model Z, still in Vent/[[Aile]]'s possession, reappears in this game. After Ouroborous starts falling apart, Model Z decides to take down the enemy Mega Men by himself, and allows Aile/Vent to go rescue [[Grey]]/[[Ashe]], who fainted after the battle against [[Master Albert]]. Model Z manages to freeze the four Biometals, which freezes the users themselves. The conclusion of the battle is unknown, since Aile/Vent did not mention anything about Model Z during the ending. However, if the player beats hard mode, then a secret ending shows the four enemy Mega Men alive and well, in their MegaMerged form. As of then, Biometal Z's whereabouts are unknown, mirroring Mega Man Zero 4. He is implied alive, as he said before he disappeared ''"It's not the day to meet my maker,"'' referencing that no matter what, even in death, he continues to live, resurrected in some way or another, always fighting with whoever he is with.

  +
Zero's initial design only featured the [[Zero Buster]] as a weapon, though it was much more powerful than X's [[X-Buster]], capable of tearing an arm off of Vile's Ride Armor. Additionally, he was shown to have immense physical strength and coordination, as he was able to match and even surpass Sigma in hand-to-hand combat during their initial encounter.

  +
Zero's most iconic weapon is the [[Z-Saber]], which he received when reconstructed in ''Mega Man X2''. He is an incredibly skilled swordsman, capable of performing a variety of special Techniques by analyzing and learning from the data of his opponents. He can also wield other melee weapons such as daggers or hammers.
An interesting point in this is the fact that he seemed to die aboard Ouroborous, made from Model Ws, which are made from pieces of the Ragnarok, the space station where Zero appeared to die in ''Mega Man Zero 4''.

Like X, Zero's power source is solar energy. His body material is comprised of a Titanium Z alloy, and is equipped with mechanisms called the Z-Brain and the Z-Heart, which conceal an unknown power.<ref>[[Rockman X4 Saikyou Daizukan]], page 77</ref> In addition, Wily claimed that Zero was powered by a power source that was even stronger than [[Bassnium]].

In this alternate continuity, Zero, X, and a fellow Hunter named [[Shadow]] are sent by [[Colonel Redips]] to deal with the [[Rebellion Army]] uprising in [[Giga City]]. They first investigate the [[Lagrano Ruins]], but Zero is separated from X after Shadow betrays them for the Rebellion. Due to communications jamming, they are unable to reunite.
Zero (in his ''Zero'' series form) appears as a hidden playable character. He serves as a mid-boss. In his story, it appears he traveled back in time, since he's the only Reploid in the time frame and Ciel is the only person who can communicate with him. After winning a battle with Shin Akuma, Zero is transported to an ethereal-like cloudy area and then Athena appears to him. Zero asks her where is he exactly and she states that he is in Heaven. Zero then tells Athena for her to send him back since he had a mission to accomplish and had no time for this. Athena then engages Zero in a battle to see if he deserved to return to his time, which Zero wins and gets sent back to his own time frame where he re-establishes contact with Ciel. Because he appears in a collaboration game between Capcom and SNK, his story is considered non-canon to the series. When playing as Zero, a WARNING signal will appear on boss pre-battle introductions, including [[Wikipedia:Akuma (Street Fighter)#Shin Akuma|Shin Akuma]] and a Zero mirror match itself. Zero uses many of his weapons from ''Mega Man Zero'', including the Triple Rod, Buster Shot and Shield Boomerang. He can also use [[Cyber-elf|Cyber Elves]] in some of his attacks.

Zero reappears later in [[Ulfat Factory]], facing the Rebellion alone. He helps X and Axl stop [[Mach Jentra]], and is happy to join his old allies. However, with the wound of Shadow's betrayal still fresh, Zero is unwilling to trust X's new allies in the [[Resistance (Mega Man X: Command Mission)|Resistance]] and leaves to fight the Rebellion solo again.

{{Main|Zero (Marvel vs. Capcom series)}}<!--)-->
Zero is a playable character, appearing once more in his ''X'' series appearance, with his battle music from ''X2'' as his theme music. Needless to say, Zero appears similar to his ''Tatsunoko vs. Capcom'' appearance, but with a few modifications: he has all Command Arts from various X games that were in ''TvC'', plus new moves like [[Raikousen]] from ''Mega Man X8'' and a powerful wave slash attack known as Genmu Zero ([[Genmurei]]), which is his final attack as a boss in ''X5''. Other than that, not much else has changed other than his normal attacks undergoing some minor tweaks and many of his combos working differently than in TvC. In Japanese, Ryoutarou Okiayu is still Zero's seiyuu, but in English, he has a new voice actor, Johnny Yong Bosch.

  +
*His fighting stances in the Capcom vs. games are inspired by his ''X'' series' stances (even though they look very different from each other), with his TvC stance having Zero's both fists clenched (''X4''-''5'' stance), and his ''MvC'' stance with the leading hand open (''X6'' stance). His standing light, medium and heavy attack in both games are based on his basic attack combo, his crouching medium based off of his crouching attack, and his jumping medium is his normal midair slash. However, all animations look different because the Z-Saber is holstered on the leading shoulder in his stance, rather than the following shoulder like in the ''X'' series' sprites (and in canon via the artworks, also being sheathed over his left shoulder).

  +
Zero is a playable character in ''[[Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds|Marvel vs. Capcom 3]]'' and ''[[Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite]]''.
*Zero's alternate colors all resemble other characters from the series: The blue one is based on X, the black one having a resemblance to his older brother Bass than to his actual black armor, and the purplish one resembling Axl more than his Zero series counterpart.

**In ''Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', he gains three new colors, one for his ''Mega Man Zero'' version, another based on Vile and the last based on X's First Armor from ''X1''. His X scheme, however, is removed in this version.

* One of Zero's new winquotes snidely mentions X (more specifically, his win quote against Hawkeye: "You're very cunning. You have that in common with X. You also lost to me, so you share that too."), which some see as a response to many fans' negative response of his absence in the game. Ironically, X himself is his DLC costume in ''Ultimate''.<ref>LBD "Nytetrayn", "[http://www.themmnetwork.com/2011/11/11/x-as-ultimate-mvc3-dlc-sort-of/ The Mega Man Network: X as Ultimate MVC3 DLC… Sort of? Plus Tron & Frank (Update 2)]." The Mega Man Network. November 11th, 2011.</ref>

*In his ending, he is assisted by [[wikipedia:Silver Surfer|Silver Surfer]] in returning to his world, but winds up in the Neo Arcadian era instead. Silver Surfer informs him that this time and world already have a Zero, but goes by the name of "Mega Man Zero", expressing his confusion over this. In ''Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', the ending has an additional line of dialogue. After Zero claims he is not Mega Man Zero, he further adds that "if there ever was such a being" in his bewilderment. This is only semi-ironic in that the other Zero is in fact his future self (not that Zero himself would know about it). The Surfer's bewilderment may be a nod to early confusion in the fandom about Zero being considered a "Mega Man" or not, what with the title of his own series.

*He also appears in Nova's ending as part of the new Mega Nova Corps alongside Mega Man, Roll, Proto Man and [[Beat]].

Early on during Chapter 29, Zero expresses shock upon noticing Iris, who appears alive and well. After hearing that she still wishes to live in a Reploid only world together with Zero, the latter reminds her that such a world is nothing more than an imagination. However, Iris then asks him if such a world is meant to be his purpose and desire, which is partly why Iris appeared. Zero then suffers an emotional breakdown, questioning himself about whether or not a Reploid only world was what exactly he was fighting for. He then gets taunted by Vile in the process for getting emotional over a girl's wish, claiming that the former is exactly the same as the latter before. Zero becomes paralyzed with anguish and is unable to move.

Zero also appears as two different [[w:c:supersmashbros:Spirits|Spirits]] in both his ''X'' series and ''Zero'' series incarnations, both being Primary-based Attack Spirits. In the manga, Zero is an ancient Reploid found by [[Lito]] and his friends that has two identities: Zero, a weak coward, and Rockman Zero, a highly skilled warrior. The reason for this is that Zero uses minimal energy while in his coward state (no helmet), allowing him to unleash his full power while in his Rockman Zero form (with helmet). Zero and Lito travel together and join the Resistance, defeating Neo Arcadia. Zero departs with the Resistance, and Lito returns home.

Similar to his role to the games, Zero is a special A-class Maverick Hunter. Initially a member of the 17th Elite Unit, he later became the captain of the 0th Special Unit. He is a close friend of X's and understands him well. He sees the true nature of X more than himself, and has immense trust and hope in him. He is sometimes jealous of X's rich expression of emotions that he does not possess, though he describes X's character as naïve. In the beginning, he was often called "senior" by X. He also initially had a calm and sometimes indifferent personality like in the games, due to the fact that he didn't have many appearances in the series, but he gradually becomes very passionate, inspired by X. He is often shown without his helmet, with a straight-back hairstyle inspired by Keith Anyan from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toward_the_Terra ''Toward the Terra''], although his bangs become loose by ''X4''.

  +
In the battle against the eight bosses in ''X1'', he appears in the [[Sting Chameleon]] battle and the Storm Eagle battle. In the former, he was willing to burn down the forest and the animals to accomplish his mission, but X chose to protect the forest and the animals by defeating Chameleon alone, and Zero believed in him and gave him a chance. In the latter case, even though he was defeated by his old friend, Eagle, he understood his true intentions and obtained the head parts that Eagle had hidden. The words "To the nostalgic future" that he said to X just before he blew himself up against Vile would later be repeated in ''X2'' and ''X4''.

In ''[[Rockman X2 (manga)|Rockman X2]]'', Zero's wreckage was stored in Dr. Cain's laboratory, but was taken away by Sigma's forces, and he was repaired and revived by Serges. He escaped before the brainwashing and tried to stop X from fighting [[Overdrive Ostrich]], but was unable to do so in time. Since then, he has been unable to meet X until he deactivates the Sigma chip implanted in his head, so he left the battle against [[Magna Centipede]], leaving Mother to advise X. He tried to counteract the effects of the Sigma chip in [[Morph Moth]]'s scrap factory, but before he could do so, he was completely brainwashed by the Sigma chip and his body color [[Black Zero|changed to black]]. He tore through X immediately after defeating Morph Moth. In the battle at the Sigma base, after finishing off Serges, he engaged in a one-on-one battle with X. His armor was destroyed, but he came to his senses when the Sigma chip in his helmet was crushed by X's punch attack, and he and X went into battle against Sigma.
===Rockman Zero commercials===

In Japan, there are four animated featurettes played together with the advertisements for each of the four ''Zero'' games.

  +
In ''[[Rockman X3 (manga)|Rockman X3]]'', he is also the captain of the 0th Special Unit, and often fights in tandem with X. In the decisive battle against Doppler's army, the [[Nightmare Police]] defeated them and he was about to be executed along with X. However, when X was resurrected with a new armor, he was able to narrowly save his own life as well. Soon after, Zero was thought to have been destroyed by Doppler's attack, but it turned out that he had barely survived. The beam saber left behind in Sigma Castle is given to X, and plays an important role in the battle against Sigma. In the epilogue, Zero is shown being repaired in Cain's laboratory.
*''Zero 1'': Neo Arcadian forces attack the monument holding Zero. Zero wakes up and then causes the monument to blow up. He is then seen standing amid the flaming wreckage while holding an unconscious Ciel, contemplating why he was there and who he is (a hint to his amnesia in the game).

*''Zero 2'': Zero gets pinned to a wall by [[Panter Flauclaws]]. Before Flauclaws opens fire on the Resistance nearby, Zero changes forms to his Energy Form and forces the Mutos Reploid away with the Chain Rod as Ciel watches in awe.

*''Zero 3'': A badly injured Zero pants heavily before eventually getting back up to his feet with some effort as Ciel watches, and a giant robot proceeds to collapse and fall apart, causing a huge explosion of dust in the process.

*''Zero 4'': a white image of Zero turns his head to the camera and closes his eyes before fading away (subtly foreshadowing Zero's fate at the end of the game) as well as a line saying "All Ze to become...". This commercial is notable for showing the gameplay images before the animation, when it was usually the other way around.

  +
In [[Rockman X4 (manga)|''Rockman X4'']], Zero reboots after two months, but is unable to use his buster, perhaps due to strange dreams of Sigma morphing into Zero, and loses it completely when he uses [[Earth Gaizer|Earth Crash]] to make way for X in the AX-10 incident. In the Repliforce struggle, he chose the path of the rebels and started his own battle against Repliforce. While defeating Colonel and stopping Iris from going out of control, he ends up losing her as well. In the final battle, he reunites with X, who has already come to his senses. Zero envies him for being able to shed tears, and lashes out at him with anger and sadness for not being able to cry for Iris, but after being touched by him and the heart of Earth, he decides to find his own potential and joins him in the battle against Sigma and the fight to go to the "nostalgic future."
==Arsenal==

{{Main|Zero's weaponry}}

Zero is a very adept combatant on the battlefield. Originally, his power far exceeded X's (until X himself grew in power). His power as a robot from a past age is considerably exceptional in the Maverick Wars. In ''Mega Man X'', Zero was equipped with a powerful buster weapon known as the [[Zero Buster]], but from ''X2'' and onward, Zero wields a melee weapon known as the [[Z-Saber]], a sword with a blade composed of pure destructive energy, modeled after the [[w:c:starwars:Lightsaber|lightsaber]] of ''[[Wikipedia:Star Wars|Star Wars]]'' fame. It is for this reason that Zero is often used for seasoned players as he is required to fight up close rather than at a distance. His first playable appearance in ''Mega Man X3'' is more or less essentially a future representation of how X will turn out, unleashing double charged shots and the almighty Z-Saber which fells bosses with a few mere swipes. Unlike his comrades, Zero does not copy the powers/weapons of defeated Mavericks, but instead, learns special attacks known as {{Nihongo|'''[[Zero's weaponry|Techniques]]'''|必殺技|Hissatsu Waza|lit. [[Wikipedia:Coup de grâce|Coup de grâce]] or "Sure-killing arts; a generic Japanese term for a special move"}} in the ''X'' series and as '''[[EX Skill]]s''' in the ''Zero'' series, which are attacks based on techniques utilized by bosses. He does not require the use of a buster weapon as the attacks often utilize his hands or enhances his Z-Saber power by empowering the blade with elemental properties. The Zero Buster can be utilized from both arms, as evidenced by some gameplay and cutscene representations interchangeably showing the buster arm as being his left or right.

  +
===''[[Irregular Hunter Rockman X]]''===
Unlike X, Zero cannot obtain performance-enhancing armors, with [[Zero's Forms|a few exceptions]]. This is due to the fact that during the time Zero was created, Dr. Wily could not prepare any future armor enhancing upgrades for him like Light had done for X, thus Zero's durability stayed consistent, making him a traditional [[Wikipedia:Spell-caster (gaming)|Glass Cannon]]. Defined in ''[[SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos]]'', ''Tatsunoko vs. Capcom'', and ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'' (more so in terms of his bio), Zero appears to not be so overly strong (unless he wasn't infected first with the Sigma Virus when he was first found, as he was uncontrollable or in his Awakened Boss fight in ''X5'') as his ''Marvel vs Capcom 3'' power grid statistics gives his Stamina rating a 3/7, but his other stats (Strength, Speed, Intelligence and Energy Projection) a 5/7, with his Fighting Ability as a 7/7. This shows that what Zero lacks in raw strength with the absence of the virus he makes up for extreme fighting ability and skills in many other fields, enabling to out-duel/wear down nearly any foe, along with showing extreme adaptation to much of his battles (which also plays in hand with his versatile move list as of late). This is expressed in the aforementioned fighting games where Zero has low health and average attack, though many claim him to have some (if not many) of the best and longest combos (even loops or near/true infinites) out of all characters.

  +
The manga starts with Zero, X, and Vile working together to take down a Maverick. After the mission, Sigma thinks that Zero may cause trouble to his plans, and decides to label him a Maverick, having Maverick Hunters pursuing him. Not believing that Zero became a Maverick, X covers Zero for a while so he can prove that he is not a Maverick. However, after some time, Sigma orders X to destroy Zero. While X goes after Zero and tells him what he was ordered to do, Zero attacks X, but X does nothing as he does not wish to harm his friend. Seeing that X isn't an enemy, Zero tells that during his investigation he discovered that Sigma is planning to conquer the world, and convinces X to join him to stop Sigma. Vile appears with three Maverick Hunters and reveals that he was waiting for them to destroy each other to finish the survivor. Zero and X defeat the three Hunters, and Vile retreats. Watching the battle, Sigma decides to start his plans and attacks the city, but Zero and X manage to stop the attack, forcing Sigma and Vile to escape.

===''[[Rockman X The Novel: Irregulars Report]]''===
In ''Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', Zero (like several characters from the original version to the revision), has had his power grid changed. His Stamina and Strength are now 2/7, his Intelligence a 3/7, and all the rest of his other stats are now 5/7. This shows that not only Zero puts more than just skill into his fighting ability, and that he uses all his speed and knowledge to back up his fighting prowess. His "Learned" intelligence also shows Zero tends to clear his mind during fights for better focus.

Zero appears with a role similar to the games.

  +
===[[Mega Man (Archie Comics)|''Mega Man'' (Archie Comics)]]===
The original ''X'' games, however, have Zero's Z-Saber be capable of destroying several normal enemies in a few blows. The fighting games seem to decrease it to give more balance, and coincidentally give a possible accurate description of Zero's statistics. Zero may also be aware of his low durability (in comparison to his comrades), and may also have enough skill to last in a fight to fight/parry off any hit that comes to him, describing more of his skill as a Master Swordsman. This makes him a rather unique Glass Cannon as he not only he's weak on defense and strong on offense like the other kinds in fiction, but Zero has skills in several other fields of battle with great ability to adapt to practically any opponent he fights; Glass Cannons usually have raw power, which Zero seems to lack often, putting him in the category of a "Gradual Grinder". And like the "Fragile Speedster" archetype of characters, Zero has also focused very well on speed.

  +
{{Main|Zero/Archie Comics}}<!--)-->

Zero's long combos in fighting games seems to nod at his personality as well, taking note that he shows no mercy to his enemies as he basically never holds back on them, showing he always fights to the best of his ability. This shows that Zero is somewhat more powerful than he lets on in-universe.

*According to [[Keiji Inafune]], he envisioned Zero as the new "Mega Man" and wanted him to be a playable character from the start. Keiji wanted to introduce something new and different to the franchise, but understanding that it would not be wise to completely go against everything that had already been established (also fearing that Zero's drastic appearance would receive a critical reaction), he did not mention this idea to his superior and submitted Zero as the sub character to Hayato Kaji's "Mega Man" (X) as originally intended.<ref>"Usually, I would be the one doing the main characters, and Kaji would take care of the sub characters. This time, however, we decided to change things up a bit. I asked Kaji to do Mega Man, and I made the sub character, Zero, my project. I'm sure I've said this in may different places in more than a few different ways, but I really wanted Zero to be a playable character. I wanted to offer a 'different Mega Man,' and possibly a more hardcore game."

"I wanted to make the character's personality a little more hardcore too, and I knew that if I was working from the design of the traditional Mega Man, I'd be stuck in that whole 'nice guy' image. The whole time I was designing Zero, I was seeing him as the 'new Mega Man.' But I didn't bring that up when I went to submit our designs to my boss. I brought out the X that Kaji designed and said, 'Here's the new Mega Man!' My boss had a very positive reaction to X, and when I brought out the design for Zero, I simply said, '...and this is the sub character.' I figured that would ensure a less critical analysis of Zero and, as a result, I got an immediate OK in the form of, 'Red, huh? Hmm... yeah, that's nice.' **Some say that Zero's final design was inspired by [[ProtoMan]], which seems likely due to similarities in color and other similar details.

**Also coincidentally, the serial number for Proto Man is formed only by zeros (DLN-000).

(The special code for X's Ultimate Armor gives him a slight recolor, and finding a Light Capsule gives him the armor. *There are a few copies of Zero in the franchise: the fake Zero from ''Mega Man X2'', the Zero Nightmare from ''Mega Man X6'', [[Nichts]] from ''[[Rockman X Giga Mission]]'', and Zero's newer body from the ''Mega Man Zero'' series.
* Since the revealing of Zero's origins from ''Megaman X4'', it is a longstanding popular fan theory that Zero was possibly involved actively in the Classic timeline after its events, from either spurring the creation of X, being activated in his earlier, violent and destructive personality against Mega Man, to being the cause of a "cataclysm" that marked the end of the Classic series. Inafune officially states that Zero does not activate during the Classic series and has no active role, but does not dissuade fan liberties to explore this curious and interesting possibility.

  +
**Although not fully based on Zero's design, [[High Max]] and the Nightmare from ''Mega Man X6'' were created by Gate using Zero's DNA, while Omega is a modification of Zero's own body.
* Although Zero and X aren't technically Reploids (robots based on X's schematics, "replicated androids"), as they are original androids from the past (technically making them "[[Robot Master]]s"), they are known as such because the term Reploid is used for all androids with human-like A.I, and for reasons of simplicity.

  +
*As revealed in ''[[Mega Man 11]]'', in his youth, Dr. Wily believed that if he granted robots "unstoppable power and insurmountable speed" that could outdo humans, he would cause humanity to celebrate robots for what they were as opposed to considering them as mere tools, as that kind of power could turn any robot into a "hero". This is ironic, as Dr. Wily had created Zero, his final creation, as the most powerful and destructive to exist, but Zero ultimately ended up becoming a formidable force of good.
*In ''X1''-''X4'', Zero's eyes are green in-game (even though his eyes were brown in his mugshot from ''X1'') and blue in artworks. His eyes completely changed to blue in ''X5'' onward. His eyes are also green in ''Maverick Hunter X'' and ''Tatsunoko vs. Capcom''. In the ''Zero'' series, his eyes ranges to black to purple.

  +
*It's rather interesting how Zero, a creation of ''Dr. Wily'', actually ended up fulfilling ''<nowiki>Dr. Light'</nowiki>''s dream instead of Wily's - in conclusion of a lifetime fighting against hordes of Reploids based on Light's creation, no less, whose leaders and/or master manipulators often carried even darker ambitions than Wily. It is also to be noted that, ironically enough, he also fulfilled Wily's original dream of a robot capable of doing heroics as revealed in ''Mega Man 11''.
*Zero has been depicted with a full head of hair in manga form, but never in the video games. In the ''Rockman X'' manga, Zero's helmet is constantly removed, either by himself or due to the helmet being damaged in battle. He is shown to primarily keep his hair slicked back, although it appears more unkempt following larger battles. In the ''Rockman Zero'' manga, Zero's helmet is used as a signal to display his split personality syndrome; the cowardly inept personality appears without a helmet, and features loose unkempt hair, while his stoic combat-ready personality appears wearing the helmet.

*The events during and after ''Zero 4'' suggest that Zero has finally died for good; however, to this day, this was not officially confirmed (''Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works'' claim his fate is still unknown). This would later be repeated in ''ZX Advent'', where Model Z disappears under similar circumstances.

  +
*In his foreshadowing appearance in ''Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters'', Zero's silhouette is shown with his upgraded frame as of ''Mega Man X2'' instead of his default frame, as seen with the shape of his shoulder (styled akin to his shoulder guards). Though this was due to the upgraded frame being unusable at the time as Zero was still unruly before being sealed away.
*In ''X5'', if the player looks carefully at the intro sequence, where there are green words scrolling down the screen, one of the words say "Wily".

His eyes are also green in ''Maverick Hunter X'' and ''Tatsunoko vs. Capcom''. In the ''Zero'' series, his eye colors range from black to purple.
*In the ''X'' series, Zero is a Maverick Hunter fighting against insurgence and rebellions caused by Mavericks. In the ''Zero'' series, Zero ''joins'' the [[Resistance|rebellion]] against the current government, in the process becoming labeled a Maverick himself.

*Of all the characters to have appeared in the series, Zero is unique in that his Japanese voice actors differ in the series he appears in. In the ''X'' series, his voice actor is [[wikipedia:Ryōtarō Okiayu|Ryōtarō Okiayu]], while in the ''Zero'' series, his voice actor is [[wikipedia:Yūto Kazama|Yuuto Kazama]]. The voice change is evident as the former reprises the role for ''Maverick Hunter X'', which the ''Zero'' series predates, as well as ''X7'' and ''X8''.

*Having been completed by Dr. Wily between the ''Classic'' and ''X'' series, Zero is the longest-lived robot in the Robot Continuity, with an (ultimate) age of termination of 300+: 100+ for the time between the ''Classic'' and ''X'' series, 200+ more for the Maverick and Elf wars, another 100+ for the inactive hibernation state in which he begins the ''Zero'' series, and three for the ''Zero'' series until ''Zero 3'', where his original body was ultimately destroyed.

  +
**Also interesting is how despite not being intended to be [[Wikipedia:Three Laws of Robotics|Three Laws]] compliant, at the end of ''Zero 4'' where Zero fights Weil, Zero unwittingly follows the fittingly named "Zeroth law", which was made to prevent robots from harming a human, unless said harm would benefit humanity in general.

  +
*In ''Mega Man X: Command Mission'', Zero is always seen as left handed with his saber in cutscenes, but in battle he uses his right hand.
*Zero is one of the few main characters that actually disappear canonically with no apparent explanation (and the most famous, being that he's done it time and time over).

  +
*The theme when Zero is discovered in ''Mega Man X6'' is a remastering of "[[Variable X]]" from the first ''X'' game.
*As Model Z, Zero is the only Biometal to actually attack when not [[Mega Man (ZX series)|MegaMerged]], paralyzing opponents while not even wasting a drop of his energy.

** This quality is shared with his death theme from ''Maverick Hunter X''.
*Having been completed by Dr. Wily between the ''Classic'' and ''X'' series, Zero is the longest-lived robot in the Robot Continuity, with an (ultimate) age of termination of 300+: 100+ for the time between the ''Classic'' and ''X'' series, 100+ more for the Maverick and Elf wars, another 100+ for the inactive hibernation state in which he begins the ''Zero'' series, and four for the whole of the ''Zero'' series, possibly longer given his unknown fate at the end of ''Zero 4''.

*Zero, or some signature of Zero, appears in every series in the main timeline (in the ''classic'' series in ''[[Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters]]'', throughout the ''X'' and ''Zero'' series, in the ''ZX'' series as [[Model Z]], and in the ''Legends'' series in the form of his [[Z-Saber]]/Zetsabre). He is the only character in the entire franchise that appears in every main series thus far. Additionally, he appears in ''[[Mega Man Network Transmission]]'' as [[Zero.EXE]].

*Interestingly, his bio in ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'' states that Sigma discovered Zero in a cave, which is incorrect as he was found in a desolate laboratory by Gamma's unit, which met an unfortunate demise upon awakening him. Sigma however only fought Zero, and barely made it out alive at a terrible cost.

*In ''Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', Hawkeye refers to Zero as an "Angry space midget with a sword." Zero's win quotes mentions X as cunning, but also shares that X also lost to him. With Frank West, he calls him a civilian, and his win quotes when defeating Frank West refer to his camera as a "photo capture device". Zero likely refers to it in this technical sense because cameras in the future obviously look much different than the one Frank uses.

*In both versions of ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', Zero will say, "Another souless copy." when facing himself in a mirror match. This is a possible reference to both ''X2'' and ''X6''.

*The theme when Zero is discovered in ''X6'' is a remastering of "Variable X" from the first ''X'' game.

*In both versions of ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', when Zero uses his Genmu Zero attack, if one sees Zero carefully, he will be emitting an aura similar to his Maverick state in ''X5'' when he executes the attack.

* Zero's bonus skin in ''[[Mega Man X DiVE]]'', White Day Zero, has him wearing a white and black overcoat, which not only was a pun on the holiday he was released in, but also acted as an indirect allusion to his creator, Dr. Wily.
  +
**Underneath the coat, Zero's torso also resembles his design in the ''Zero'' series, which may imply that in-universe, the differing design between Zero in the ''X'' series and Zero in the ''Zero'' series (and by extension, Omega Zero) was due to Zero's body being modified during the latter's initial period in stasis.
  +
*In ''Mega Man X6'', when Zero encounters the armor capsule in Infinity Mijinion's stage, he mentionns that Dr. Light saved X during the ending of ''Mega Man X5'', and asks Dr. Light who saved him. Dr. Light responds that he doesn't know. This parallels with ''Mega Man X5'', when Zero encounters the armor capsule in Crescent Grizzly's stage and asks Dr. Light who the "old professor" in his dreams is. Dr. Light likewise responds that he doesn't know. This suggests that Dr. Wily (who also aided Sigma in ''Mega Man X5'') may have saved Zero.

This page is about the original Zero. For others, see Zero (disambiguation).
"Even if we Reploids are destined to join the scrap heap when that evolutionary step does come about... we still have to fight... not only against Mavericks, but against our own destiny as well."
―Zero, Mega Man X8

Zero (ゼロ) is the deuteragonist of the Mega Man X series. He is a high-ranking Maverick Hunter, a dedicated warrior who fights Mavericks alongside X and Axl. Though he is secretly the greatest creation of Doctor Albert W. Wily, making him effectively the successor of Bass, Zero chooses to fight for what he believes in rather than letting the circumstances of his creation determine his destiny.

Zero is the main protagonist of the Mega Man Zero series, and his essence lives on in the Mega Man ZX series as Biometal Model Z.

Appearance

Zero's most distinctive traits are his red and white armor, a horned helmet with a blue gem on his forehead, and a long blond ponytail. His initial design in Mega Man X had spherical shoulderpads (one with a "Z" symbol), two green gems on his chest, a white codpiece, and white kneepads and toes. This was an incomplete version of his design by Dr. Wily, as Zero was left unfinished when he was sealed in his capsule.[1] Zero's official height is around 175 cm (5' 9"), being slightly taller than X, though his exact height seems to vary in some appearances.[2]

When Zero was reconstructed by Serges of the X-Hunters, his body received several upgrades that completed his design. His shoulders gained reinforced rectangular shoulder plates, along with improved arm guards, new dash thrusters and golden accents on his legs, and thicker chest armor. A small pack was also added to his back to store his Z-Saber when not in use.

Zero has never been seen without his helmet in official media. In the Bandai Mega Armor series of figures, Zero's head has no hair and his ponytail is merely attached to his nape. Alternatively, the Rockman X manga frequently shows Zero without his helmet, giving him a full head of blond hair. This was addressed in U-Capcom, which admitted that the series designers have differing ideas of how Zero's hair should look and there is no clear answer to the matter.[3]

In Mega Man X8, Zero received the most minor redesign out of the cast. Some changes included shortened helmet horns, a less bushy ponytail, white heels, and an indent at the top of his codpiece.

Personality

Outwardly, Zero is a somewhat cold individual, and a ruthless Maverick Hunter. He constantly keeps his cool, even in times of crisis. He is also very straightforward and down-to-earth, often sarcastically snapping back at the unpleasantries of Mavericks and destroying them without entertaining their philosophies or taunts.

Despite this, Zero truly does have the capacity to care for others. He is very protective of his allies, such as X and the Maverick Hunters, going to great lengths to ensure their safety. He has a great distaste for the deaths of innocents. He will even disregard his own safety, sacrificing himself, to save others, such as during the battle with Vile in Mega Man X and willingly piloting the shuttle into the Eurasia colony in Mega Man X5. His care for others was detrimental during the Great Repliforce War, where he was forced to face his friends, Iris and Colonel, and their deaths at his hands caused him great emotional turmoil.

Zero's original persona was much different. He was a violent, disobedient, and uncontrollable Maverick, which was the original reason his creator Dr. Wily sealed him away in a capsule.[1] Upon being released from his capsule, Zero went on a rampage; he often made feral screams and laughed psychotically, and took great pleasure in tearing apart Sigma and his comrades. In the non-canon ending of Mega Man X2, Zero briefly becomes a Maverick again and attacks X in a rage.[4] However, Zero also has an even darker persona, the one that Dr. Wily intended for him, and which can be awakened in Zero through sufficient exposure to Maverick Viruses capable of doing so.[5] In the bad ending of Mega Man X5, Zero's "true self" awakens, which is just as misanthropic as his Maverick self but with a degree more self-control and absolute obedience to Wily's will.[6]

Background

Creation

MM2TPF Zero

Zero revealed in Bass' ending in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.

Zero was created by Dr. Albert Wily sometime in 20XX. Though debatably canon,[7] Wily first alluded to the construction of Zero in Bass' ending in Mega Man: The Power Battle, describing him as a new robot to surpass both Bass and Mega Man.[8] Wily showed a glimpse of Zero to Bass in his ending in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, where a silhouette of his body can be seen. Learning from his past mistakes, including the accidental creation of Bassnium and his construction of Bass and King, Wily had constructed Zero as a far more advanced robot than anything he had ever built before.[9] He allegedly used Proto Man as a starting reference for Zero's design.[10] Ultimately, Wily's goal for this robot was to seek and destroy Dr. Light's final work on X, and to also spread another evil creation, the Maverick Virus, to ensure the future would remain in chaos.[11][12]

However, Zero contained a flaw in his cognitive program that made him violently disobedient. Because of this, Wily planned to flush Zero's mind using the Maverick Virus, but ran out of time as he neared the end of his life.[1] With both Zero and the Maverick Virus unfinished, Wily sealed them away in a hidden laboratory.[13]

Awakening

Zeroconstruction

Zero under construction in Dr. Wily's lab.

In the following century of 21XX, prior to the first Mega Man X, Zero's location was discovered by by a group of Reploids. Presumably, his storage was within close proximity of the place where X was stored too.[14] Once awakened by this group, Zero destroyed them, as well as any further intruders who would enter the lair. Labelled a Maverick (by the definition of being a threat to humans), Zero was later cornered by Maverick Hunters inside, and Zero destroyed Garma's unit. Not wanting more comrades endangered by the mysterious Maverick, then-17th Elite Unit commander Sigma challenged Zero in a one-on-one battle. Even though Zero eventually gained the upper hand during the battle, Sigma was able to defeat the red Maverick after the gem on Zero's head began to glow with a 'W' symbol, apparently causing Zero great pain.

Zero&Sigma

The fateful battle between Sigma and Zero.

Sigma punched the crystal, shattering it and defeating Zero. However, Zero's virus had entered Sigma's system;[15] now both Sigma and Zero were infected with the Maverick Virus.[16] Zero was brought to Dr. Cain at Sigma's request, who analyzed him. Upon awakening again, Zero became docile and had no memories of his previous actions. No longer showing signs of Maverick behavior, Zero's strength was put to good use and he was enlisted into the Maverick Hunters' 17th Elite Unit, but unknowingly Zero still carried the virus.[17][18]

Mega Man X

After Sigma declared his Reploid rebellion on June 4, 21XX, Zero was made the de facto leader of the Maverick Hunters due to being the highest-ranked Hunter who hadn't joined Sigma at the time. Additionally, Zero was approached by X, who sought to help fight the Maverick uprising despite not being a Maverick Hunter. Zero allowed X to join him on the battlefield.[19]

X1 Zero Saves X

Zero saves X from Vile.

While fighting Mavericks on the Highway, Zero found X at the mercy of Vile and came to his rescue, blasting the arm off Vile's Ride Armor. Zero threatened to finish Vile, forcing him to flee onto the Death Rogumer. X lamented that he wasn't powerful enough to defeat the Mavericks, but Zero assured him that he had the potential to grow through battles, and over time, he would become more powerful than himself (almost everything in their conversation was mistranslated in the English version of the game). He then suggested X to continue suppressing Sigma's rebellion (this was in order for X to grow), while he performed reconnaissance to locate Sigma's new fortress.[20]

Once X had defeated the eight former Maverick Hunters, Zero announced that he had discovered Sigma's Hideout and that he was ready to storm it whenever X was. Desperate, Zero mustered the last of his power and broke out of his cage, overloading his Z-Buster on the back of the Ride Armor to destroy it - however, he gravely wounded himself in the process.

Zero laid on the ground, bisected at the waist, until X finally destroyed Vile and rushed to his side. Zero admitted that he was no longer able to fight and entrusted defeating Sigma to X.

  • If X had found him Arm parts, Zero would confirm that X had now surpassed him, and he was relieved by the fact that X would have a winning chance against Sigma.
  • If X hadn't found the Arm Parts, he would say X had become a lot stronger, but he still had doubt it would have been enough to defeat Sigma. He then requested X to take his Arm Buster[21] to improve his fire power, and hope he will master it. He then said "See ya, X... I'm counting on you..." as his consciousness was fading.

Zero's role in the remake's Maverick Hunter X continuity remains mostly unchanged. Because X is already a B-Class Hunter at the beginning of the story, the two are much more familiar with each other. Zero also appears as a boss alongside X in the non-canon Vile Mode, and he plays a large role in the included OVA The Day of Σ.

Mega Man X2

For boss details, see Zero/Mega Man X2.

Six months later, three Maverick leaders known as the X-Hunters contacted the Maverick Hunters, claiming to be in possession of three rebuilt fragments of Zero's body. Although the American translation fails to reveal how the X-Hunters obtained the parts, the Japanese version elaborates that Serges made them, as they were additions that had been previously planned by Dr. Wily (including his Z-Saber). The X-Hunters challenged X to a series of duels over Zero's parts - if X fails to defeat them all, they eventually storm Hunter Base and steal Zero's control chip by force.

The next time Zero appears can change based on the player's actions:

  • If X collected all of Zero's parts from the X-Hunters, Dr. Cain reassembles Zero. He then appears before the battle with Sigma and destroys the Fake Zero for X. Sigma claims that Zero ought to be a Maverick because of his past, but Zero tells Sigma off.[22] This scenario is the canonical one.[23]
  • If X failed to collect all of Zero's parts, the X-Hunters reassemble Zero instead. He then appears as a boss before the battle with Sigma, attacking X in a rage. Once X defeats him, Zero returns to his senses and apologizes.

Either way, Zero encourages X to go after Sigma while he destroys the Central Computer, punching a hole in the floor to help X along. By the time X defeats the Sigma Virus, Zero causes the Central Computer to start detonating. Before disappearing, Sigma expresses confusion as to why Zero did not become his servant, mentioning that he is "the last of the Doctor's creations."[24] Afterwards, X and Zero meet on a cliff by the sea to reminisce about the game's events.[25]

Mega Man Xtreme

After X awoke from the cyberspace record of the Highway, Zero informed him that Mavericks had hacked the Mother Computer, causing digital chaos and making Mavericks run wild.

By this point, Zero was made the commander of the 0th Special Unit.[26] When the Maverick uprising in Dopple Town began, Zero and X were deployed to stop it - however, Dr. Doppler's forces attacked Hunter Base in their absence, forcing them to hastily return. When X was kidnapped by the traitorous Hunter Mac, Zero was forced to rescue him and kill Mac. This marked Zero's first time as a playable character, wielding his Z-Buster alongside his new Z-Saber.[27]

Regardless of whether or not Zero has been damaged, he will automatically appear in Doppler Stage A to assist X with the sub-boss REX-2000. He helps X by destroying the mechanism lowering the ceiling before departing. Later, if Zero is used to fight the optional sub-boss Mosquitus in the Doppler Stage B (available by destroying Vile with his weakness in his secret stage beforehand), Zero will be damaged when the Mechaniloid crashes into him and explodes. He will then lend his Z-Saber to X while he returns to Hunter Base for repairs. If Zero is taken out of commission by Mosquitus, he will not reappear to help with the REX-2000 fight on future visits.[28]

Zero and X then stand atop a cliff outside the base, where X can't shake the feeling that one day he will have fight Zero for the sake of humanity.[29]

Mega Man Xtreme 2

Zero and X are deployed to Laguz Island to investigate the mysterious Erasure phenomenon, discovering that it was perpetrated by the Soul Erasers: Berkana and Gareth.

The mission at Laguz Island was also the first official mission where Iris, Zero's love interest, acted as his and X's operator. Zero worried that her brother, Colonel from Repliforce, would be angry with him for putting her through such a difficult operation.

Mega Man X4

ZeroWily

Zero encounters his creator in his nightmares.

This game marks the first time Zero is a fully playable character, even possessing his own story separate from X's. His gameplay has also been reworked, making use of the Z-Saber instead of the Z-Buster and learning Techniques instead of wielding Special Weapons.[30]

In Zero's story, he first encountered his mysterious creator within his dreams, who cryptically ordered him to fulfill his destiny by destroying his nemesis. When Zero awakened from the nightmare, he was immediately dispatched to the flying city Sky Lagoon, which had been attacked by Mavericks. Zero ran into Magma Dragoon during the mission, but was forced to retreat as the city fell to the Earth. He then returned to investigate the crash site, discovering that Iris had been caught up in the attack. He defended her from the giant Maverick Eregion, until Colonel suddenly appeared. Zero requested that Colonel disarm himself and his Repliforce men for questioning, suspicious of Repliforce's involvement in the incident, but Colonel refused and instead turned his back on Zero. Shortly afterwards, Repliforce would announce their coup d'état, resulting in the Great Repliforce War breaking out.[31]

Despite his concerns about what Colonel would think, Zero was pleased to find Iris assisting him as an operator from Hunter Base, like during the Erasure incident.

Zerovscolonel

The battle between Zero and Colonel is interrupted by Iris.

Eventually, Colonel challenged Zero to a duel at Repliforce's Memorial Hall; Iris begged Zero not to accept the call, but he did anyway, determined to put an end to the conflict. The two Reploids began their battle, but Iris appeared and pled with Colonel to stop, since Zero had saved her life after the Sky Lagoon's crash. Colonel, who had always regarded Zero as a friendly rival, backed off. Frustrated, Zero stated that someone had to stop Repliforce, much to Iris' grief.[32]

When Repliforce's plan was finally put into motion, Zero rushed to the Space Port to stop the ascension of Repliforce to the newly constructed space station, Final Weapon. She then fused with Colonel's chip, resulting in the creation of a large Ride Armor-like combat form which attacked Zero. Zero, who was totally overthrown by the pain, began questioning his own reasons for fighting and the means of his own existence.[33]

Zero Iris

After the death of Iris, Zero is lost in pain.

Filled with anger, he confronted General, the highest leader of Repliforce, defeating him in battle. Wily's laboratory, and Sigma once again reminded Zero, in a sarcastic manner, that Zero is in truth a Maverick.[34] Zero then battled and defeated Sigma; General thanked Zero for his help and proceeded to sacrifice himself to stop the Final Weapon.[35]

Questioning whether or not Reploids were destined to become Mavericks after all, he returned to Earth.[36]

Zero also briefly appears in the ending of X's story. X calls Zero and makes him promise to destroy him if he ever goes Maverick, but Zero finds the proposition confusing. Upon realizing how serious X is about the promise, he agrees, and X ponders their inevitable confrontation.[37]

Mega Man X5

For boss battle details, see Awakened Zero.

To make matters worse, the space colony Eurasia is set to impact the Earth as well, filled with a different virus, thanks to Sigma's hired gun Dynamo. The combination of perils threatens to doom the entire planet.

The Maverick Hunters devise a plan to repel the Eurasia colony, using two options: the outdated Enigma cannon and a Space Shuttle outfitted with explosives (Zero would pilot the latter plan, due to being the best spacecraft pilot left in the Hunters).

  • If Eurasia is destroyed in time, its fragments still hit the Earth but damage is mitigated. The Colony Virus mixes with the Sigma Virus to create the Zero Virus, which in turn forms an underground void called Zero Space.
  • If Eurasia is not destroyed in time, it crashes into the Earth and causes borderline apocalyptic damage. Additionally, the creation of the Zero Virus not only creates Zero Space but also awakens Zero to his original Maverick nature, turning him against the Hunters. He will no longer be playable because of this development.
Awakened Zero

Awakened Zero.

Either way, X and Zero enter Zero Space to pursue Sigma, who has hidden inside of it (if Zero has gone Maverick, then he hides there himself). Before reaching Sigma, however, X and Zero face each other in battle. There are several possible scenarios:

  • If the player is X, he confronts Zero about how the latter's power has been rising in contact with the Zero Virus. He demands that Zero return to Hunter Base, but he refuses.
  • If the player is Zero, he is confronted by X (backed by two Lifesavers) to send him back to Hunter Base for his immunity to the Zero Virus. Zero is outraged.
  • If Zero has already gone Maverick, then X is met with the Awakened Zero. This Zero's mind is unclouded, and he is devoted to his destiny to destroy X.

X5anime251

The broken remains of Zero.

  • If X defeated Sigma and Zero was normal, X lifts Zero's damaged remains, pleading with him not to die. This ending is canon.[38]
  • If Zero defeated Sigma himself, the same events occur from Zero's perspective. As he dies, Zero sees his first battle with Sigma, his own creation, Dr. Wily, and finally Iris, before he asks X to keep the world safe and passes away. This ending is presumably canon, as its events don't interfere with the previous ending.
  • If X defeated Sigma but Zero had gone Maverick, then Sigma destroys himself along with the unconscious Zero, leaving X alone and badly damaged. A mysterious hologram of Dr. Light then repairs X. A week later, it is revealed that X's mind has been mysteriously wiped regarding the incident, and he now has no memories of Zero at all. This ending is not canon.

Mega Man X6

A few weeks after the Eurasia incident, Reploid scientist Gate found a small piece of Zero's body near the crash site. Using the information he gathered about the Sigma Virus and Zero's DNA,[26] Gate went mad and created the Nightmare, a discolored clone of Zero called the Zero Nightmare, and the near-invulnerable Reploid High Max. This resulted in a worldwide fascination with the Nightmare, and as the investigation began, its leader Isoc blamed the "ghost of Zero" for it. After being met with this news, X took the assault on Zero's reputation personally and set out to investigate as well.

X6 scene 14

Zero reunites with X

However, unbeknownst to anyone, Zero had been secretly making a miraculous recovery. Once X destroys the Zero Nightmare in one of the secret areas, the real Zero reveals himself and X is reunited with his friend, mysteriously repaired and carrying a brand new Z-Saber. Together, X and Zero set out to put a stop to the Nightmare. Who or what exactly repaired Zero after his apparent death in the Eurasia crisis was never directly stated.[39] In the Weapon Center, the Dr. Light capsule hologram denied knowing who repaired him.[40] It should be noted that in Japanese, the reunion between X and Zero had Zero state that he laid low until he "fully recovered from the damage."[41] In the English translation, Zero told X that he repaired himself.[42]

Depending on when Zero is unlocked, he can assist X in fighting the eight Nightmare Investigators. It is also possible for him to defeat High Max, which results in a confrontation with Isoc. The scientist is elated by Zero's power and encourages him to become even stronger, using a mysterious energy field to defend himself before fleeing. Later, when storming Gate's laboratory, Zero can also come across the body of Isoc, whose soul has left his body. Zero then hears a mysterious voice calling him the "ultimate robot" but he brushes it off and leaves to pursue the reborn Sigma.

X6 scene 51

Zero about to be sealed

In X's ending, Zero is seen lamenting the unfortunate death of Gate and promising to build a utopia with the rest of the Hunters. Meanwhile, Zero's personal ending helps reconcile the storyline between the X and Zero games. It shows Zero being sealed to remove a component from his body (presumably something having to do with the Maverick Virus or his original evil nature). This was originally going to show that the X series had ended after X6 in order to make way for the Zero series, but since the X series evidently continued past this point, this scene was retconned to take place in an unspecified time period beyond the final X series game.[43]

Alternatively, it is possible to clear Mega Man X6 without X ever finding Zero. In this event, cutscenes show that Zero is indeed alive, but X and the other Maverick Hunters never find him. Zero leaves on his own, stating that there's something he needs to take care of (presumably eliminating the Zero Nightmare). This ending is non-canon.

Mega Man X7

Once X retires to pursue peaceful means to end Maverick conflict, Zero takes up the bulk of the Maverick Hunters' workload. Unfortunately, the world finally being repaired after the Eurasia incident means surges in Maverick crime are more common than ever, leaving the Hunters overwhelmed. This leads to the formation of Red Alert, an illegal Maverick-hunting syndicate led by the vigilante Red.[44]

X7 scene04

Zero taking Axl to see X.

When Axl flees from Red Alert and is pursued into the city by Mechaniloids, Zero heads out to put a stop to the chaos. He first meets Axl on the highway, helping him destroy his Mega Scorpio pursuer before arresting him and taking him into Hunter Base for questioning. After hearing Axl's story, the Hunters are contacted by Red, who challenges them to a Maverick hunting duel over custody of Axl. At first Zero doesn't want to get involved, and is especially befuddled when Axl insists on joining him in the field, but decides to give the young Reploid a chance to fix the mess he helped start.[45]

As Zero and Axl fight the eight members of Red Alert, Zero gets to hear about Axl's backstory and how Red Alert had changed for the worse recently, which is why he quit in the first place. If he speaks with Wind Crowrang, he also learns that someone affiliated with Red Alert is interested in studying his capabilities.[46] When X finally decides to come out of retirement and help in the fight, Zero is relieved to see his old friend back in action.

Upon defeating the eight members of Red Alert, Zero and the others are sent to the Crimson Palace to face Red. Zero is impressed by Axl's reckless tactic paying off.[47]

In Zero's ending, he has a chilling nightmare of X (or a similar individual) on a murderous Maverick-hunting spree.[48]

Mega Man X8

Some time later, Axl has become an official Maverick Hunter who often works with Zero and X in the field. The trio are deployed to Noah's Park to deal with the Maverick Mechaniloid Crabs-Y, and upon defeating it they are attacked by Vile. Vile informs them that Mavericks have taken over the Jakob Project as he kidnaps its director, Lumine.[49]

As the Hunters suppress the Maverick uprising perpetrated by the new generation Reploids, Zero learns that many of them admire his strength but deride him for being an outdated model who works with the Maverick Hunters. Zero also meets Layer, a new navigator with a crush on him that he doesn't openly reciprocate, keeping the relationship professional. Upon learning that Sigma is involved in the incident yet again, Zero's memories from the Eurasia crisis return to haunt him.

After defeating the eight Mavericks, Zero and the Hunters travel to the Moon to face Sigma in his Sigma Palace. Sigma thanks Zero for infecting him with the Maverick Virus, which had allowed Sigma to go Maverick in the first place, before challenging Zero to battle.[15] The Hunters destroy Sigma, reducing him to scrap, but Lumine suddenly appears and reveals that he was using Sigma to hasten the evolution of new generation Reploids. Zero and the others then defeat Lumine. However, Axl is struck in the head by a tentacle when he approaches Lumine's dormant body, forcing Zero to intervene by slashing the tentacle while X destroys Lumine.[50]

While traveling back to Earth on Jakob, Zero stands in the shadows while X carries Axl's comatose body. Noticing something weighs heavy on X's mind, Zero assures him that no matter what Lumine said about the destiny of Reploids, they would keep fighting.[51]

Mega Man Zero series

The Elf Wars

At some point after the Mega Man X series, Zero felt uneasy about his body's connection to the Sigma Virus. He admitted himself to a research institute, going into a coma so his body could be studied while his mind was removed for separate study. This research led to the creation of the Cyber-Elves, most importantly the Mother Elf. X used the Mother Elf to erase the Sigma Virus and finally end the Maverick Wars.

However, a bitter Dr. Weil corrupted the Mother Elf into the Dark Elf and began the period known as the Elf Wars. Enacting his Project Elpizo, Weil used Zero's body to create his ultimate weapon, Omega. Fortunately, the research institute was able to create a replica of Zero's old body to place his mind in. Now in an identical new body, Zero was awoken to assist X in the Elf Wars, and together they defeated Weil and Omega. As a result, Weil was cursed with a regenerative armor and exiled, while Omega was locked in the Forbidden Ark in orbit.

After the Elf Wars, Zero chose to return to stasis, convinced that the world was in good hands with X's protection. X protested, but by the time he arrived Zero was already halfway gone, and he was able to give X a last bit of encouragement before slipping away into sleep.[52]

Zero in the Mega Man Zero series.

Zero is awoken from his stasis yet again by Ciel, the young leader of the Resistance, in a last-ditch attempt to fight the tyranny of Neo Arcadia and Copy X. Zero complies and the legendary red hero comes back to life.

Throughout the Mega Man Zero series, Zero reconnects with X (now a Cyber-Elf himself), makes new allies in the form of the Resistance, battles Dr. Weil and Omega once again, and generally fights for the good of humans and Reploids alike. His quest finally comes to a close after fighting Dr. Weil for the final time aboard the falling space station Ragnarok, sacrificing himself in order to save his friends on the Earth.

Biometal Model Z

Centuries after the Mega Man Zero series, Zero returns in the Mega Man ZX series as Biometal Model Z, which contains the essence of Zero. It is initially in the possession of Girouette, before he passes it on to Vent/Aile. Although Model Z is not playable by itself, the player combines it with Model X to form the eponymous Model ZX. Model Z's fate at the end of Mega Man ZX Advent is left ambiguous, as it stayed behind aboard Ouroboros to hold the rival Mega Men at bay for Vent/Aile.

Powers and abilities

Main article: Zero's weaponry

Zero's initial design only featured the Zero Buster as a weapon, though it was much more powerful than X's X-Buster, capable of tearing an arm off of Vile's Ride Armor. Additionally, he was shown to have immense physical strength and coordination, as he was able to match and even surpass Sigma in hand-to-hand combat during their initial encounter.

Zero's most iconic weapon is the Z-Saber, which he received when reconstructed in Mega Man X2. He is an incredibly skilled swordsman, capable of performing a variety of special Techniques by analyzing and learning from the data of his opponents. He can also wield other melee weapons such as daggers or hammers.

Like X, Zero's power source is solar energy. His body material is comprised of a Titanium Z alloy, and is equipped with mechanisms called the Z-Brain and the Z-Heart, which conceal an unknown power.[53] In addition, Wily claimed that Zero was powered by a power source that was even stronger than Bassnium.

Mega Man X: Command Mission

CommandMission Zero2

Zero in Mega Man X: Command Mission.

In this alternate continuity, Zero, X, and a fellow Hunter named Shadow are sent by Colonel Redips to deal with the Rebellion Army uprising in Giga City. They first investigate the Lagrano Ruins, but Zero is separated from X after Shadow betrays them for the Rebellion. Due to communications jamming, they are unable to reunite.

Zero reappears later in Ulfat Factory, facing the Rebellion alone. He helps X and Axl stop Mach Jentra, and is happy to join his old allies. However, with the wound of Shadow's betrayal still fresh, Zero is unwilling to trust X's new allies in the Resistance and leaves to fight the Rebellion solo again.

In Gimialla Mine, Zero appears at the last minute to help fight a Supra-Force Metal-powered Shadow. After Shadow is defeated, Zero is targeted by a surprise attack - however, Spider jumps in the way before killing Shadow. Zero is touched by Spider's selfless act and decides to give the Resistance a chance. Soon after, Spider sacrifices himself to help the others escape Incentas' trap, inspiring Zero to put aside his pride and work with the Resistance.

After Zero and the others put an end to Epsilon and the Rebellion, Colonel Redips steals the Supra-Force Metal and betrays the Resistance, labeling them Mavericks. Outraged, they storm Far East HQ and Zero demands answers. He is shocked to learn that Redips had been masquerading as Spider using a Copy Chip. He then fights alongside his friends to defeat Redips on the Orbital Elevator Babel, restoring peace and destroying the last of the Supra-Force Metal.

As a party member, Zero is capable of wielding a wide variety of beam sword weapons. His first Hyper Mode transforms him into Black Zero, while his unlockable second Hyper Mode is the unique Absolute Zero.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

TVC Zero and Rock Volnutt

Zero and Volnutt in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

While this was Zero's third fighting game guest appearance, it was the first to use his Mega Man X design over his Mega Man Zero design. He is one of the game's five unlockable characters. Zero's special moves are all derived from his Techniques, including Ryuenjin, Hienkyaku, Shippuuga, Sentsuizan, Kuuenzan, and Hadangeki. His Hyper Combos are Rekkoha, Twin Dream, and a combo utilizing Dark Hold with a triangular saber reminiscent of his Zero series Z-Saber.

In Zero's Arcade Mode ending, Yami springs back to life after being defeated and attacks Zero, knocking him unconscious. Dr. Wily appears in Zero's mind and urges him not to give up on the task he gave him. Zero then wakes back up on the moon as X, Axl, and Alia rescue him. He also makes a brief cameo in PTX-40A's ending as one of the robots in a battle tournament.

Zero is a playable character in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Project X Zone

Project X Zone Zero

Zero as he appears in Project X Zone.

Zero (in his X series design) appears alongside X. He, along with X and Vile, first appears in the game during Chapter 20, and is once more voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu.

Confused about Iris at first, the other characters present then realize that Zero is in trouble, and that they and X must protect him from danger, while attempting to defeat Vile at the same time. The game splits the winning conditions down to two options: reach Zero by the end of the ninth turn or defeat Vile, otherwise a game over will be declared. Until then, X's unit is paralyzed and unable to fight.

After any of the other party members reach Zero and heal him, he eventually recovers from his emotional breakdown and recalls his duty as a Maverick Hunter, and tells Iris that a Reploid only world is impossible. Aura from .hack appears and states that Iris and her feelings are not supposed to be present, hence causing her to fade away. Before she vanishes however, she gently suggests to Zero that things between them are okay, and encourages him to never give up before bidding him farewell. His resolve restored, Zero confidently declares he will rejoin her someday.

He uses Rakuhouha alongside X's Nova Strike (while the latter dons the Ultimate Armor) during their special attack, and uses Genmurei alongside X's Hadoken during their multi attack. The latter is learned right after Zero is rescued.

Other techniques that Zero uses in this game include Kuuenzan, Ryuenjin, Hyouretsuzan, Raijingeki, and Shippuuga.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Zero appears as a collectible trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. In addition, both versions contain a downloadable costume for the Mii Swordfighter that equips them with Zero's armor and the Z-Saber.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

SSBU Zero

Zero as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Zero appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When summoned, he dashes and jumps around the stage for around 30 seconds, attacking the player's opponents with his classic three-slash combo, Ryuenjin, Kuuenzan, and Genmu Zero. He often performs Genmu Zero soon before he vanishes, and can even perform it midair.

Zero also appears as two different Spirits in both his X series and Zero series incarnations, both being Primary-based Attack Spirits. Zero's Spirit of the Mega Man X series has his first Mega Man X design (Z-Buster), and can be Enhanced into his upgraded design from Mega Man X2 (Z-Saber). In addition to stat boosts from both Spirits, the Z-Saber version allows for enhanced movement speed and weapon attacks as its special ability. The special ability for his Mega Man Zero incarnation increases damage for all sword-based attacks.

On September 4, 2019, the Zero costume for the Mii Swordfighter became available again as DLC.

TEPPEN

TEPPEN Zero

Zero in TEPPEN

Zero is a playable character in TEPPEN, a Purple type Hero that was included in the 2020 expansion Haunted by Memories.[55] He also appears in several cards.

Zero's X1 and upgraded designs in TEPPEN are largely the same, with his limbs and joints appearing more robotic and having panel lines on his face. In his Maverick state, glowing turbines underneath his gauntlets become visible and his crystal turns purple with a letter W, similar to his flashback appearance in X4.

Zero is a SA-Class Hunter that despised evil and had no memory of his origin. Like X, Zero is an ancient robot that felt in a deep slumber and awakened many years later. Shortly after awakening, he faced Akuma and their battle destroyed the building where Zero had awakened. After seeing a large fire in a nearby city, Zero went to its direction and stopped the responsible, a Rathalos. A mysterious woman forced Zero to remember his past, causing him to go out of control and fight X. He returned to normal before finishing X, and is shaken by what happened with him, believing that he may be a Maverick like the ones he fought in the past. Not remembering his past and not knowing what to do, Zero decides to accompany X in his journey to the Land of Illusion to learn the truth.

In Ada Wong's story mode, Zero, while driven mad, also attempted to attack Ada while she was hunting for treasures, though he was forced back to sleep after being bested by her, resulting in her taking the treasure for herself. The ending also implies that she was the mysterious woman who summoned all of the heroes in the story to the Land of Illusions.

Cameo appearances

MML2Zero

  • Zero can be seen in the background of the Running Battle mode from Super Gem Fighter: Mini Mix.
  • Zero has a card in all games from the SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters series.
  • In Mega Man Legends and Mega Man Legends 2, an item called Zetsabre can be found, which can be used to produce the Blade Arm. Zetsabre is a mistranslation of Zero's Z-Saber.
  • A poster of Zero, in his "Black Armor", can be seen in the general store of Yosyonke City in the game Mega Man Legends 2, where he is described as some sort of comic book hero. Upon closer inspection, the image of Zero himself seems to have been taken from Mega Man X4, specifically, the "Weapon Get" screen.
ZeroPoster

Zero poster in Mega Man Battle Network 3.

  • Zero has a cameo appearance in Higsby's shop in Mega Man Battle Network 3 White version. In the Blue version of the game it's a poster of SharkMan.EXE.
  • Zero appears in Rockman Xover as Battle Memory and as one of the heroes that OVER-1 has to rescue, being rescued in World 2.
  • An actual NetNavi bearing the name Zero.EXE appears in the game Mega Man Network Transmission, and the anime Rockman.EXE Beast+, one of the few characters from the X series to receive a NetNavi counterpart. Here, he appears identical to Zero, but with a more demonic appearance, as he does not appear to have a human face and breathes in a manner similar to Darth Vader. Like his X counterpart, Zero still has an affinity for blade weapons and also serves as a virus being. However, unlike his counterpart, this Zero is the virus, but he still follows orders without question. In the conclusions of the series, Zero begins to show compassion, and even sacrifices himself in the anime. However, the canon ending of Transmission gives Zero a NetNavi identity as Zero.EXE, now free to roam the Internet and explore the world to make new friends, though his activity is to be monitored by Science Labs, where he now lives.
    • Two Battle Chip artworks feature Zero. The Z-Saber chip displays Zero.EXE, and another, the Z-Saver, shows the Mega Man Zero version.

Other media

Rockman X (manga)

He is often shown without his helmet, with a straight-back hairstyle inspired by Keith Anyan from Toward the Terra, although his bangs become loose by X4.

In the battle against the eight bosses in X1, he appears in the Sting Chameleon battle and the Storm Eagle battle. The words "To the nostalgic future" that he said to X just before he blew himself up against Vile would later be repeated in X2 and X4.

In Rockman X2, Zero's wreckage was stored in Dr. Cain's laboratory, but was taken away by Sigma's forces, and he was repaired and revived by Serges. He escaped before the brainwashing and tried to stop X from fighting Overdrive Ostrich, but was unable to do so in time. Since then, he has been unable to meet X until he deactivates the Sigma chip implanted in his head, so he left the battle against Magna Centipede, leaving Mother to advise X. He tried to counteract the effects of the Sigma chip in Morph Moth's scrap factory, but before he could do so, he was completely brainwashed by the Sigma chip and his body color changed to black.

In Rockman X3, he is also the captain of the 0th Special Unit, and often fights in tandem with X. In the decisive battle against Doppler's army, the Nightmare Police defeated them and he was about to be executed along with X.

In Rockman X4, Zero reboots after two months, but is unable to use his buster, perhaps due to strange dreams of Sigma morphing into Zero, and loses it completely when he uses Earth Crash to make way for X in the AX-10 incident.

Irregular Hunter Rockman X

Merchandise

Zero had several toys and figures released by Bandai. Among them were the Mega Armor models with interchangeable armor:

  • Zero - A normal model of Zero with his armor from X3 and up. Features his Z-Buster and Z-Saber.
  • Plated Zero - A plated version of his normal model.
  • Transparent Zero - A clear version of his normal model.
  • Irregular Hunter Zero - Zero with his black armor. Features his Z-Buster and Z-Saber.
  • EX Armor Zero - Zero with the X Armor from Rockman X Mega Mission 3.

And the D-Arts figures. Zero also had figures done by Furuta, Jazwares, and Kotobukiya, and has a Nendoroid figure.

Trivia

  • According to Keiji Inafune, he envisioned Zero as the new "Mega Man" and wanted him to be a playable character from the start. He wanted to introduce something new and different to the franchise, but understanding that it would not be wise to completely go against everything that had already been established (also fearing that Zero's drastic appearance would receive a critical reaction), he did not mention this idea to his superior and submitted Zero as the sub character to Hayato Kaji's "Mega Man" (X) as originally intended.[56]
  • Dr. Wily used Proto Man as reference during the development of Zero.[57] This idea has been speculated among fans due to similarities in color and other similar details, even their voice as both have been voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu in Japanese for various games,[58] It is later confirmed in an internal design document shown on the Rockman Unite event for the series 30th anniversary that took place in Hirakata and Hanayashiki Parks.
    • Also coincidentally, the serial number for Proto Man is formed only by zeros (DLN-000).
Ultimate-zero

Zero's unused Ultimate Armor design.

  • In X4, Zero was actually going to have his own Mega Armor, like X's Ultimate Armor, instead of his Black Zero recolor.[59] This indirectly explains why the Black Zero is just a simple aesthetic change before becoming an actual upgrade in later games. (The special code for X's Ultimate Armor gives him a slight recolor, and finding a Light Capsule gives him the armor. Presumably, this would also the case with Zero if he actually had his own armor.)
  • There are a few copies of Zero in the franchise: the fake Zero from Mega Man X2, the Zero Nightmare from Mega Man X6, Nichts from Rockman X Giga Mission, and Zero's newer body from the Mega Man Zero series.
    • Although not fully based on Zero's design, High Max and the Nightmare from Mega Man X6 were created by Gate using Zero's DNA, while Omega is a modification of Zero's own body.
  • As revealed in Mega Man 11, in his youth, Dr.
  • It's rather interesting how Zero, a creation of Dr. Wily, actually ended up fulfilling Dr. Light's dream instead of Wily's - in conclusion of a lifetime fighting against hordes of Reploids based on Light's creation, no less, whose leaders and/or master manipulators often carried even darker ambitions than Wily. It is also to be noted that, ironically enough, he also fulfilled Wily's original dream of a robot capable of doing heroics as revealed in Mega Man 11.
  • Although Zero and X aren't technically Reploids (robots based on X's schematics, "replicated androids"), as they are original androids from the past (technically making them "Robot Masters"), they are known as such because the term Reploid is used for all androids with human-like A.I, and for reasons of simplicity.
  • In his foreshadowing appearance in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Zero's silhouette is shown with his upgraded frame as of Mega Man X2 instead of his default frame, as seen with the shape of his shoulder (styled akin to his shoulder guards). Though this was due to the upgraded frame being unusable at the time as Zero was still unruly before being sealed away.
  • In X1-X4, Zero's eyes are green in-game (even though his eyes were brown in his mugshot from X1) and blue in artworks. His eyes are completely changed to blue in X5 onward. His eyes are also green in Maverick Hunter X and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. In the Zero series, his eye colors range from black to purple.
  • Zero has been depicted with a full head of hair in manga form, but never in the video games. In the Rockman X manga, Zero's helmet is constantly removed, either by himself or due to the helmet being damaged in battle. He is shown to primarily keep his hair slicked back, although it appears more unkempt following larger battles. In the Rockman Zero manga, Zero's helmet is used as a signal to display his split personality syndrome; the cowardly inept personality appears without a helmet, and features loose unkempt hair, while his stoic combat-ready personality appears wearing the helmet. This later is the real personality of Zero.
  • Having been completed by Dr. Wily between the Classic and X series, Zero is the longest-lived robot in the Robot Continuity, with an (ultimate) age of termination of 300+: 100+ for the time between the Classic and X series, 200+ more for the Maverick and Elf wars, another 100+ for the inactive hibernation state in which he begins the Zero series, and three for the Zero series until Zero 3, where his original body was ultimately destroyed.
  • In Mega Man X: Command Mission, Zero is always seen as left handed with his saber in cutscenes, but in battle he uses his right hand.
  • The theme when Zero is discovered in Mega Man X6 is a remastering of "Variable X" from the first X game.
    • This quality is shared with his death theme from Maverick Hunter X.
  • Compared to other characters, Zero probably has the most love interests:
    • In X4, Iris has feelings for him.
    • In X8, Zero's Navigator, Layer, shows signs that she has a crush on him.
    • In the Zero series, Ciel has feelings for him.
    • Despite the many love interests, it's never been officially stated that Zero had romantic feelings for them in return, although he seemed to regard Iris with the most emotion.
Mega Man X DiVE Hunter Program White Day Zero

Zero's White Day outfit in Mega Man X DiVE

  • Zero's bonus skin in Mega Man X DiVE, White Day Zero, has him wearing a white and black overcoat, which not only was a pun on the holiday he was released in, but also acted as an indirect allusion to his creator, Dr. Wily.
    • Underneath the coat, Zero's torso also resembles his design in the Zero series, which may imply that in-universe, the differing design between Zero in the X series and Zero in the Zero series (and by extension, Omega Zero) was due to Zero's body being modified during the latter's initial period in stasis.
  • In Mega Man X6, when Zero encounters the armor capsule in Infinity Mijinion's stage, he mentionns that Dr. Light saved X during the ending of Mega Man X5, and asks Dr. Light who saved him. Dr. Light responds that he doesn't know. This parallels with Mega Man X5, when Zero encounters the armor capsule in Crescent Grizzly's stage and asks Dr. Light who the "old professor" in his dreams is. Dr. Light likewise responds that he doesn't know. This suggests that Dr. Wily (who also aided Sigma in Mega Man X5) may have saved Zero.

  16. How the infection occurs varies between sources:
    • In Rockman Perfect Memories, page 60, it is said that Zero was created with the Sigma Virus in his body, which infected Sigma.
    • The Rockman Zero Collection timeline says that the virus was leaking from Zero's capsule, and both Zero and Sigma were infected due to their close proximity to it and the damage they suffered in the battle.
  17. Mystery Scientist: "... I see. It'll take a while to get rid of this. Even with the latest technology, it's hard to succeed... I'm not really sure if I can fix this completely..." It's none of my business, but what will we do in a crisis without you?" Zero: "Ha. I'm sorry, but don't worry... There's a superior Maverick Hunter. But I'm scared that I may become a disturbing presence."
  18. Sigma Virus: The terrifying virus that causes a Reploid to go Maverick. -- Page 174, Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works, The three keys to solving the mystery of Zero and Omega (The book notes that this information comes from early concept phases, and therefore may not be canonical)

  56. "Usually, I would be the one doing the main characters, and Kaji would take care of the sub characters.
Hmm... yeah, that's nice.' (laugh)" -Keiji Inafune

  58. However, only Zero has been consistently voiced by Ryoutarou Okiayu via his X series appearances and crossovers; Proto Man is only voiced by him in Rockman Kiki Ippatsu, Mega Man 8, Super Adventure Rockman, and Mega Man Battle & Chase.
  59. "The truth is, Zero was going to have a Mega Armor, too. For various circumstances, we wound up with just X this time. You want to know what his Mega Armor would have been like? Well, it has to do with Zero’s connection to W… actually, I’m not allowed to say any more than that. But, at least I can show you the rough design. I hope that sometime it will see the light of day. That’s all for now! Enjoy Rockman X4!"The Reploid Research Lavatory: The Making of the Ultimate Armor
