Wily Star (ワイリースター Wairī Sutā) is the starbase that Dr. Wily hides out in Mega Man V. It has a giant skull called Skull Blazer (スカル・ブレーザー Sukaru Burēzā) that serves at the boss of the first Wily Star stage.

After Mega Man defeats Terra on a distant world, Dr. Wily tries to obliterate the planet along with Mega Man using the Skull Blazer. Mega Man teleports away just in time and with Rush, manages to enter the Wily Star after destroying the giant ion cannon in Skull Blazer's mouth.

After Mega Man defeats Sunstar, the Wily Star explodes. Despite this, Dr. Wily survives and attempts to challenge Mega Man in his UFO back on Earth, but ends up down on his knees after his UFO explodes from the damage taken. He begs for mercy and starts running away once Mega Man gives chase.

Stages[]

The Wily Star is split up into 3 distinct sections: the outside, and the two inside sections. It is also the final stage in the game.

Wily Star Stage 1[]

The first stage includes Mega Man on Rush Space heading towards the Wily Star. Due to flying through space, the game adopts a new gameplay style unique to this stage, where Mega Man freely fly around the screen with Rush Space in a shoot-em-up autoscroller. Rush Space can shoot buster shots forward and even charge up a bigger buster shot. Rush Space can also quickly dash in any direction to dodge attacks. The first set of obstacles are asteroids floating about in space, coming in big, medium, and small sizes. They also vary in speed, but as they cannot be destroyed, Mega Man simply has to maneuver around them. Next is a battle against multiple Malmets. Once they are all dispatched, the Skull Blazer starts shooting lasers from offscreen as Rush Space speeds up. Only 5 lasers are fired, but they take up a good chunk of the screen and alternate between covering the upper and lower areas of the screen.

At the end, Rush Space shrinks in size to directly fight the Skull Blazer, who can only be damaged when its mouth opens. The Skull Blazer moves up and down very slowly, but when its mouth first opens, it will charge up a powerful laser like before (which protects the mouth) and shoot if off straight ahead. Once the Skull Blazer closes its mouth, it will have moved down or up so the cannons in those areas can attack, always alternating between moving up and down. If the Skull Blazer has moved down, it will signal its 4 upper cannons to attack by firing 4 homing missiles. If the Skull Blazer has moved up, it will signal its 4 lower cannons to attack by firing 4 shots that are loosely aimed at Mega Man's position. After its defeat, the cannon is destroyed and Mega Man can enter the Wily Star.

There are no valuable pickups to speak of, not even regular pickups.

Wily Star Stage 2[]

The stage takes place inside the Wily Star after defeating the Skull Blazer. It is the longest stage in the game, and brings back several enemies that Mega Man has encountered in the past, including the Mega Man Killers (and Quint) from the previous Game Boy games. However, with the help of Terra's weapon, the Spark Chaser, most of the lesser enemies will be taken care of easily. In addition, there are many split paths and dead ends full of goodies to explore, usually with the help of Deep Digger and Break Dash, with one path required the use of Rush Jet. Halfway through, the stage brings back a few gimmicks from other stages, such as the falling platforms from Pluto Stage. Kamapots from Mars Stage, the rotating platforms and the scrolling platforms from Uranus Stage. In addition, some drops will also have spikes scroll left to right, so Mega Man should watch out. After the four boss battles battles, the very end has a capsule leading to a room that contains a rematch against the eight Robot Masters.

The placements are:

  • Top left (Venus)
  • Center left (Jupiter)
  • Bottom left (Mars)
  • True center (Saturn)
  • Bottom-center (Neptune)
  • Top right (Uranus)
  • Center right (Mercury)
  • Bottom right (Pluto)

Once they are all disposed of, Mega Man immediately transitions to the third and last stage of the Wily Star.

Valuable pickups to look out for:

  • GBEddie Eddie: In the first split path provided, simply drop straight down to meet Eddie. Eddie will randomly provide a big health energy, a big weapon energy, a 1-UP, or an E-Tank. If the player does not like what he drops, Mega Man can slide under the pickup as it get thrown and reset the room from the ladder going down.
  • GB1UP 1-UP (x2): In the hallway leading to Enker, these two pickups are tucked away in an upper area and are walled off by blocks. Mega Man has to use Rush to get up there and use Deep Digger to pull out the blocks. Alternatively, Mega Man can use an enhanced Mega Arm to grab the pickups from the bottom.
  • Proto Man: After Enker's boss room, Mega Man should use Rush Jet to land on a platform to the right. Then, he will have to use Break Dash to get through. It leads to a dead end room with Proto Man, who plays his whistle before giving out either a big health energy, a 1-UP, an E-Tank, or a rare S-energy ball that immediately restores Mega Man's health and all of his weapon energy. He cannot be cheesed: if Mega Man leaves the room without collecting the item Proto Man throws out, he won't return and his item will be gone.
  • GB1UP 1-UP: After the secret Proto Man room above, if Mega Man jumps off the platform and hugs left while falling, there will be another platform, though he will have to use Deep Digger to pull out the block. It leads to a dead room with this pickup protected by a Piriparee.
  • ETankGB E-Tank: After Quint's boss room, there will be another split path to take. The forward path requires Break Dash to get through. Here, one of the Kamapots is needed to jump up to this pickup, which hangs in the air. Mega man should be careful not to hit his head on the spikes above, though.
  • ETankGB E-Tank: Rather than going forward in the split path above, Mega Man should go down, which requires Deep Digger. This pickup is in plain sight, but sandwiched in-between two rotating platforms. Mega Man should be careful, as if he gets another goodie that is sandwiched, he won't be able to get back up to get this pickup.
  • Proto Man: After Ballade's boss room, Mega Man should make his way down the long drop. After the first Break Dash platform on the right, he should keep hugging right so he can land on a second Break Dash platform that is also on the right.

Wily Star Stage 3[]

The final stage of the Wily Star. It is very short and has no harmful obstacles, other than a ton of goodies (along with another mandatory encounter with Proto Man) to make sure Mega Man is perfectly set to fight fight the last bosses, which are all fought sequentially. They include the L. Knuckle and R. Knuckle, Brain Crusher, and the game's final boss, Sunstar.

Valuable pickups to look out for:

  • ETankGB E-Tank (x2): In plain sight, can't be missed (second one can't even be avoided). Simply walk to them.
  • Proto Man: Right after a very long fall, Mega Man enters a room where he meets Proto Man, who plays his whistle before giving out either a big health energy, a 1-UP, an E-Tank, or a rare S-energy ball that immediately restores Mega Man's health and all of his weapon energy. He cannot be cheesed due to coming down from above.

Other media[]

TheEndOfRaMoon

The Wily Star in the comic.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

The Wily Star appears briefly in the end of Mega Man #32, where the Skull Blazer on the front has been replaced with the crest of the Stardroids. It is depicted as the Stardroids' means of reaching Earth. It would later reappear in Mega Man #55 in Dr. Light's vision of the events of Mega Man V.

Mega Man: Upon a Star[]

WilyStationOVA

Dr. Wily's station in Mega Man: Upon a Star.

In the second episode of the OVA, Wily has an unnamed starbase similar to the Wily Star, but it has some differences like the skull being yellow and the lack of other weapons. It first appears as the last stage in the "game world", where it can shoot small Meteorite Rockets from the mouth. Mega Man uses Rush to reach it and fights against enemies like Gravity Man and Sniper Joes inside the station, later facing Dr. Wily inside a giant oni robot. Because of a problem in the real world, Mega Man is sent there while Wily gets sent to Dr. Light's lab. The station appears again later in the real world, where it had new parts under it and in the sides, the lower part being able to launch large Meteorite Rockets. The station is abandoned after the damage it suffered from the explosion of the oni robot.

Trivia[]

  • The Wily Star is an obvious reference to the Death Star from Star Wars.
  • Prior to Wily Star making an appearance in Mega Man V, the Sonic the Hedgehog series had the Death Egg make its first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was created by Doctor Eggman, Wily's eventual partner in Worlds Collide.
    • Both Death Star homages were combined into the Wily Egg in that same crossover, although Wily wanted to name it the "Wily Flying Fortress".
  • The stage 2 of Wily Star has 12 bosses, the most bosses in a single stage in the Mega Man series.
