Wily Machine 3 (ワイリーマシン3号 Wairī Mashin 3 Gō) is the third Wily Machine created by Dr. Wily, used by him in the Wily Castle from Mega Man 3 to fight against Mega Man. It is the first Wily Machine to use a walking system instead of being aerial, having large nails as legs and walking sideways like a crab. After the defeat of his previous Wily Machines, Wily designed this machine with a cockpit on the top so Mega Man would not be able to reach it. However, Wily didn't count on Mega Man's new partner, Rush, allowing him to fly and easily reach the cockpit with Rush Jet.[3]

Mega Man 3[]

Wily Machine 3 is the boss of Wily Stage 5.

Attack Pattern[]

Coming in from the right side, Wily Machine 3 uses giant nails on its sides as walkers to move from one side to the other, repeating this movement forever by going back and forth along the arena. Every time a nail rises, Mega Man can slide under it with good timing and can hang out just underneath the base of the machine.

The first phase's weak point is a rotating cannon mounted underneath the base, which can also be slid under. The cannon's pattern differs depending on where the player is. If the player is not underneath the machine, the cannon will attack by shooting out large energy balls that spiral towards the player in increasingly bigger spirals. If the player is underneath the machine, the cannon will not fire. It is recommended to stay outside when using the Mega Buster, as it is much easier to hit the cannon and will not risk bonking your head on the bottom of the Wily Machine 3.

After depleting the first energy gauge, the cannon and "crab eyes" will be destroyed, and Dr. Wily reveals himself at the very top of the machine, inside the dome. The holes that contained the crab eyes now attack by firing small projectiles from both sides. These projectiles fly at an arc and are aimed at the player's position, but their hitboxes are much bigger than they look, so be extra careful with dodging them. During the second phase, the Wily Machine 3 also gets a new attack: after moving both nails and getting into resting position, the Wily Machine 3 will slam its body down to deal a lot of damage if Mega Man is underneath. Overall, this second phase is extremely difficult with the Mega Buster as you can only hit Dr. Wily when his machine slams down, and he only stays down for a brief period.

Once the Wily Machine 3 is destroyed, it is revealed that the Dr. Wily inside of it was a fake, and Mega Man proceeds to Wily Stage 6 to fight the final boss, Gamma.

Weaknesses[]

The first phase has two weaknesses: Hard Knuckle and Spark Shock, both of which destroy the cannon in just 4 hits. It is also semi-weak to the Search Snake, which destroys it in 7 shots. With the Hard Knuckle, you can go underneath the machine and aim the fist upwards to hit the cannon without having to jump. The Spark Shock, on the other hand, can be fired much more quickly, though requires short hops to hit the cannon. The Search Snake, however, is the best of both worlds, meaning you can slide underneath the machine and repeatedly shoot Search Snakes into the cannon without having to jump thanks to the small arc it travels in just after firing.

The second phase retains its weakness to Hard Knuckle and still dies in 4 hits to it, with the weapon's aiming capable of hitting Dr. Wily while he's up high. While not a weakness, Rush Jet can prove extremely useful, as Mega Man can just stay level with Dr. Wily and blast away. As he does not have I-frames, he will be very easy this way.

Other media[]

The Wily Machine 3 appeared in issue 47 of the Mega Man comic series by Archie Comics, where Mega Man fought it shortly after disabling the Doc Robot. Mega Man noted that it resembled the Wily Walker, Wily's earlier creation that had led to him being banned from work on robotics (a comics-exclusive concept). After defeating it, he attempted to interrogate and apprehend Wily, only to discover it was actually a robot in disguise (which was foreshadowed by it constantly repeating his threat during the battle), although Mega Man noted that the presence of a fully operational control unit indicated that Wily had at one point intended to use it himself. Mega Man proceeded to link up to the Wily Machine to discover the location of Wily and Gamma.

Trivia[]

  • The Wily Machine 3 was designed in a way to give the players more opportunities to use the sliding introduced in Mega Man 3.[4]
