Wily Capsule (ワイリーカプセル Wairī Kapuseru) is the teleporting escape pod that Dr. Wily rides and uses for combat after the destruction of his Wily Machine. First appearing in Mega Man 4, it is the final form of Wily in said game and onward (save Mega Man 11), which torments Mega Man for the rest of the classic Mega Man series. Sometimes Wily Capsule acts as a separate boss, but in most games it continues to fight as a second or third form after the Wily Machine is destroyed.

Appearances[]

Mega Man 4[]

The Wily Capsule from Mega Man 4 is the boss of Wily Stage 4, being the final boss of the game. This was the first time the Wily Capsule made its appearance. This Wily Capsule is equipped with an infrared leading system that allows Wily to move in the darkness without problems.[1]

Attack Pattern[]

The room is completely pitch-black, with only Mega Man being visible normally. The Wily Capsule remains hidden in the darkness and attacks Mega Man with one large energy ball. This energy ball is gathered together by massive energy and once it forms, it becomes much larger and then fires itself at Mega Man's position, going at a fast speed. It is a dangerous projectile, capable of killing Mega Man in 4 hits, though the telegraph does give away its location easily. The Wily Capsule is only visible in the brief split-second that the energy ball is formed, from the big flash it creates, and the boss will not take damage at any other time. The locations of the energy ball formation and the Wily Capsule are always separate from each other.

Weaknesses[]

Unlike future Capsule fights, this Capsule is completely immune to the Mega Buster, but is nevertheless weak to 2 weapons. The biggest one is Pharaoh Shot, with the fully charged version destroying the Capsule in five hits. It can very easily aim to hit him if he's above or below, and the Pharaoh Shot staying above the player's head makes it easy to hit the boss when it's above you. The second weapon that can damage the capsule is Ring Boomerang, but it only does 1 damage and should be saved as a last resort if the player does not have enough Pharaoh Shot. If the player runs out of either of these weapons, the fight is unwinnable and they are forced to die and grind off the Imorms in the stage for more ammo.

Aftermath[]

Upon destroying the Capsule, Dr. Wily gets knocked to the ground and gets on his knees, bowing to Mega Man in defeat once again. The lights come on to reveal the entire room. After begging for mercy, Dr. Wily gets up and shakes his eyebrows at Mega Man one last time before disappearing behind a flip door that he landed next to. A self-destruct sequence is initiated, but Mega Man teleports out of the Wily Castle and heads back home on a train. Dr. Wily can be seen escaping in his UFO, with steam coming out of it, just before the Wily Castle explodes in a skull-shaped explosion.

Mega Man 7[]

Wily Capsule

The Wily Capsule in Mega Man 7 disappears and reappears much like the capsules in Mega Man 5 and 6, but instead of fading in, it pulls off a "camouflage cloak" of sorts. This Wily Capsule is considered one of the toughest bosses in the original Mega Man series. According to Yoshihisa Tsuda, it turned out as tough as it did because Keiji Inafune said, "Let's make the very last fight insanely hard!".[2]

Mega Man 10[]

There are two Wily Capsules in Mega Man 10, one piloted by the real Wily and another by a decoy.

It shoots five homing projectiles three times, that then return to the Wily Capsule. Then one capsule shoots one big projectile to the other capsule, and drops down five big projectiles, and sometimes repeats the process two or three times. If hit, the decoy's capsule will fire a shot back, and will not be damaged. Some ways that the capsules can be distinguished from the real Wily and the fake is that the fake Wily has a red triangle on his head and has gray skin. The real Wily also sometimes sneezes. The real Wily Capsule can only be damaged with the Mega Buster, Proto Buster, Bass Buster, and the Chill Spike. Its primary weakness is the Chill Spike, which not only does considerable damage to the capsule, it seems to exacerbate Wily into coming down with a cold, hence his occasional sneezing during the battle.

Rockman Strategy[]

The Wily Capsule α (威利膠囊α), also named Dr. Wily Robot, is fought in the final stage, "Dimensional Space". Skull Man, Bomb Man, Sword Man, Aqua Man, and some enemies also appear in the area to assist Wily. His element is "Neutral".

Mega Man II[]

Mega Man II

In Mega Man II, Wily uses an unnamed transport different from other capsules, as it does not look like a UFO or a capsule, being a propelled machine. Also, unlike the others, it does not fight back. Instead, whenever one of the forms from the Wily Machine II is destroyed, this capsule will eject itself from the machine, and fly off to one of the other two remaining machines, restoring the boss' life gauge. It is the weak point of the Wily Machine. After defeating the third form, Wily tries to flee away into space with this machine, but it is attacked by Mega Man and Wily falls to his apparent death.
