This article is about the Mega Man X series character. For the Mega Man Zero series character known as "Dr. Vile" in Japan, see Dr. Weil.
"Ha ha ha ha ha! Why don't you just give up now and get it over with? The world as you know it? Mavericks? Kiss it all goodbye! Mayhem, doom, and destruction! That's what we were built for!"
―Vile, Mega Man X8

Vile, known as VAVA (ヴァヴァ) in Japan, is a major antagonist in the Mega Man X series. Formerly an SA-Class Maverick Hunter, he always had violent tendencies and was eager to participate in Sigma's rebellion, becoming an infamous Maverick with a grudge against X. He appeared in multiple games as a boss, and was a playable character for the first time in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.

Appearance[]

Vile wears basic body armor with a distinct purple sheen and white and gold highlights. His shoulderpads are rectangular in shape, and he bears a belt at his waist. He wears a helmet with a dark, T-shaped visor. It is unclear if the visor hides his face or if it is his face; in the Mega Man X3 opening, his Mega Man X3 artwork, the Rockman X3 manga, and the Ruby-Spears cartoon, Vile has a singular, glowing eye in the darkness. Attached to his shoulder is a cannon, featuring an ammo belt arching into a pack on his back.

Vile's later appearances retain this design, always featuring his signature T-shaped visor and shoulder cannon, but employing different color schemes and accents. In Mega Man X and X3, his shoulder cannon was incorporated directly into his shoulderpad, while in X8 and Maverick Hunter X, it was attached to his back and sat behind his shoulderpad. This design is retained in Rockman X DiVE.

Personality[]

Vile is an arrogant and violent individual. Though he used to be a Special A class member of the Maverick Hunters, Vile had an abnormality in his electronic brain that made him ruthlessly hunt down Mavericks and totally annihilate them, without regard for collateral damage. Due to being a borderline Maverick, he was removed from duty and detained, being freed during Sigma's rebellion so he can cause as much destruction as he wishes.[2] Despite his callous and unruly nature, he is still a clever strategist, carefully retreating after Zero damages his Ride Armor and later trapping him in a cage to keep him out of the way; Vile then cunningly attempts to use Zero as bait in a bid to capture X as well.[3] In a subsequent encounter, he further demonstrates his aptitude for martial tactics when he once again attempts to trap X but this time in a factory set to explode.[4]

While Vile originally looked down on X, he developed a grudge against X after being resurrected and upgraded by Dr. Doppler, ignoring the doctor's plans and going off to fight X on his own terms.[5] When he meets Axl, he instantly looks down on him for being a fairly new Hunter and taunts him when he gets riled up.[6]

Vile seemed especially crazed during the Jakob Elevator incident, constantly ranting to the Hunters about the destruction of the world and how hopeless their endeavors to stop the Mavericks were. While he claims a new world is coming, he also states that Reploids were made for destruction and has a generally nihilistic outlook.[7] He is deceptively affable with X and Zero, sarcastically treating them as old friends while belittling Axl. He also performed a reckless kamikaze attack after his final defeat on the Moon, a somewhat uncharacteristic action since he usually flees to live another day.

In the remake Maverick Hunter X and in other media, Vile is also a rogue character with a strong hatred for X, though it is framed as more of an envy or jealousy than a simple grudge. Here his emotions also often get the best of him, shown after his defeat when he admitted to Sigma he wasn't really sure what he intended to do after invading his fortress.[8] But even in the Rockman X3 manga, which tends to play up Vile's strategic prowess, he has a bit of a temper and brags about having a "demon" inside him, taunting X about having one too, which is also shown in the crossover Project X Zone 2.

History[]

Mega Man X[]

"You worthless piece of scrap metal, did you think you could defeat me?"
―Vile, Mega Man X

Vile was formerly an SA-Class Maverick Hunter in the 17th Elite Unit under Sigma, but was arrested when an irregularity that made him needlessly violent was detected in his electronic brain.[9] Sigma's rebellion breaks him out of prison, allowing him to cause as much destruction as he wishes.[10] He confronts X on the Highway, leaping down from the Death Rogumer in a custom Ride Armor. Thanks to his Ride Armor and battle experience, Vile easily defeats X, stunning him with a paralysis shot and grabbing him in a fist. Zero comes to the rescue by blasting Vile's Ride Armor's arm off. Unwilling to pursue a fight with the ace Maverick Hunter, Vile retreats aboard the Death Rogumer.

When X and Zero infiltrate Sigma's Hideout, Vile rushes to stop them. Knowing the threat Vile poses, Zero insists on fighting alone and chases him into the next room. However, Vile has set a trap, overpowering Zero in an upgraded Ride Armor and locking him in a cage. X enters to save Zero, but Vile defeats him too with another paralysis shot. Vile thinks he's won, laughing triumphantly, until Zero breaks free of his cage and overloads himself into Vile's Ride Armor, destroying it.

However, Vile remains relatively unscathed. He derides Zero's attempt, but is shocked when X breaks free of his paralysis, regaining his energy in the process. Vile then fights X one-on-one, and is destroyed in the battle.

Strategy[]

Ride Armor[]

Vile is invincible in his Ride Armor. He is fast and powerful, and too tall to jump over. Once X has low health, he ends the battle by firing paralyzing Electroshock Bullets until he catches him. While attempting to catch X, Vile keeps his distance to avoid causing more harm, which could otherwise result in the player losing a life.

Vile[]

Vile appears in the first stage of Sigma's Hideout, and once his Ride Armor is destroyed by Zero, he faces X on foot. Vile is still dangerous on his own, possessing high mobility combined with high contact damage. He also often goes off-screen and doesn't make much noise, making him somewhat unpredictable. His main weakness is Rolling Shield, but Homing Torpedo deals high damage with the added the benefit of its homing property.

Vile's role in the Maverick Hunter X remake has some substantial changes - for example, his loyalty to Sigma is much more tenuous, and he is fought in the third segment of the Sigma Palace rather than the first. Vile is also an unlockable playable character with his own story mode, culminating in a boss fight against X and Zero.

Mega Man Xtreme[]

"...Die! X!"
―Vile, in data form, Mega Man Xtreme

Vile makes a small appearance as the boss of the game's Opening Stage, which is a digital reproduction of the Highway Stage. In the English version, he is erroneously referred to by his original Japanese name "VAVA". He again pilots a Ride Armor against X, but this version of Vile is merely a data record of the individual, stored in the archives of the Maverick Hunters' Mother Computer, and as such the player can defeat him. He is deleted by X after his defeat.

Mega Man X3[]

For more details, see Vile MK-II.
"Don't think that this is the end, X! I will haunt you to the day you die......"
—Vile MK-II

What was left of Vile after his death in the first game was salvaged. Dr. Doppler, who was infected with the Sigma Virus and worked with Sigma himself, created a new, upgraded body for Vile called Vile MK-II.[12] However, the only thing Vile could think of was getting revenge on X, who had previously killed him. Instead of assisting Doppler in creating a new body for Sigma, he left Doppler's lab to operate on his own, despite Dr. Doppler preferring X be retrieved alive.[13]

The English SNES manual has a small alteration: It states that Dr. Doppler's first move upon becoming Maverick was to revive Vile, and it elaborates that Vile obsessing about revenge was due to becoming infected with the Sigma Virus, causing him to go out of Dr. Doppler's control. He then went on a vengeful rampage, stricken with hatred for X and Zero.[14]

Doppler talking to Vile

A resurrected Vile talking to Dr. Doppler.

The first fight against Vile MK-II is optional. He used well-placed teleporters to lure X into an abandoned factory set to self-destruct, where he tried to hinder X from escaping by attacking with a Ride Armor DRA-00, an altered Kangaroo-type. If he is defeated with either of his weaknesses (Ray Splasher and Spinning Blade), he wouldn't reappear in the final stages. If X didn't use Vile's weaknesses, he would flee the scene. In the second fight against Vile at Dr. Doppler's Laboratory, Vile would pilot the Ride Armor Goliath. After being defeated by X, he would swear to haunt him until the day X died.

In addition to his original shoulder cannon and knee-mounted napalm launcher, Vile MK-II possessed a new weapon on his left shoulder in this form. He also acquired a shield bearing his personal V-insignia worn on his back, although this was never used during his in-game battle. The shield was only seen in use in the Rockman X3 manga, where he used it to defend against X's Tornado Fang. "Vile's Shield" is also an equipment that can be obtained from him in Project X Zone 2.

Mega Man X8[]

VileV

Vile V in Mega Man X8

For more details, see Vile V.
"It begins now, X. A new world will be born! Ha ha ha ha! "
—Vile V

While on a mission near the Jakob Orbital Elevator to investigate a unique crab-like Mechaniloid, X, Axl, and Zero were interrupted by a hail of missiles from Vile, who had apparently been resurrected from his previous defeat as Vile V.[15] Vile bragged about kidnapping the Jakob Project's director, Lumine, making it the Maverick Hunters' goal to rescue him.

Vile pesters the Maverick Hunters as they fight to stop the rioting New Generation Reploids and save Lumine, randomly appearing in each stage's mid-boss room for a short encounter instead of the usual puzzle or challenge. He is later fought as a proper boss at the top of Jakob near the end of the game, but manages to escape the encounter. He reappears for the final time piloting the Ride Armor Devil Bear in the Sigma Palace, but is this time put down for good. In Hard Mode, he uses a reckless kamikaze attack to separate the player's Maverick Hunters for a while. Since the pair reunites during the fight with Sigma, it's implied but not confirmed that the other Hunter successfully destroyed Vile.

Oddly, while Axl was dazed when he first heard Vile's name (since he did not really know of him until now), Zero and X were not surprised to see him alive, calling him a "wanted" criminal as if he has been revived for quite a while.[9] Because of how much Vile talked about creating a new world, it is unclear whether he had been upgraded into a New Generation Reploid.

Arsenal[]

Zero describes Vile as a Reploid who is designed to be a war machine.[16] Vile's entire body is able to equip a wide variety of weapons, and he has a special affinity for his shoulder cannon and bombs. In Mega Man X, his arsenal includes a paralyzer shot from his shoulder and bombs ejected from his knees. As Vile Mk-II, his shoulder cannon's paralysis shot has a spread function and his knee-bombs create pillars of fire. Additionally, he has a machine gun on his other shoulder and can perform a grapple attack with his bare hands. He possesses a shield on his back but is never seen using it (except for in the Rockman X3 manga). As Vile V, his shoulder cannon fires sparkling lightning shots. Notably, his Fire Stream bombs come from his shoulder instead of his knee. He is also capable of projecting a large electric discharge from his body and summoning Bindholders, and in a cutscene he fires a stream of missiles. Throughout all of his appearances he is shown to be a skilled Ride Armor pilot.

As a playable character in Maverick Hunter X, Vile can acquire 45 different weapons. These are divided into three main categories (Arm Weapons, Shoulder Weapons, and Leg Weapons), and then each are again divided into nine weapon systems, ranging from vulcans and napalms to rocket punches and flamethrowers. His standard weapons are his Front Runner shoulder cannon, the Cherry Blast vulcan, and Bumpity Boom napalm bombs.

Appearances in other games[]

Mega Man X DiVE[]

Vile appears in as a Hunter Program and boss in Mega Man X DiVE. He has two extra different Hunter Program variants, and as a boss he pilots the Goliath Ride Armor.

  • Vile's base appearance is a Hunter Program. His Active Skills are Electric Shock Round and Explosive Round, from his boss battle in Mega Man X.
  • Halloween Vile wears a red and black armor with a bat motif. His Active Skills are Batwing Boomerang (based on Marooned Tomahawk) and the new Pumpkin Bomb,
  • Vile MK-II is a Hunter Program. His Active Skills are Flame Round and Goliath, allowing him to temporarily summon and pilot the Goliath Ride Armor.

Project X Zone[]

Vile in Project X Zone

Vile appears as a rival-type character in the Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai crossover game Project X Zone. He makes his first appearance in the game during Chapter 20, titled "The Maverick Hunters" (イレギュラー・ハンター, "Irregular Hunters" in the Japanese version). His next appearance is during Chapter 27 in the Geo-Fortress from Shining Force EXA, where he gets into a heated argument with Ciseaux from Sakura Wars 3 about which of them would take control of the fortress as their base. Following that, he appears during Chapter 29 in the online game "The World" from the .hack series, where he taunts Zero for having an emotional breakdown at the sight of Iris, who appears during the middle of the chapter to tell him she still wishes for a Reploid-only world. His final appearance is during Chapter 37 in the aerial city of Tarqaron from Tales of Vesperia where he and the game's main villainess Due Flabellum warp in. It is at this point that he is finally defeated by the party after receiving a verbal browbeating by X, Zero and Yuri Lowell. His personality in this game is exactly like his personality in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.

His attacks in the game are Rising Specter and Splash Hit.

Project X Zone 2[]

Mega Man (Ruby-Spears)[]

VIlead

Vile, as seen in the Mega Man cartoon show.

Vile appeared in Mega X, the 26th episode of the Ruby-Spears Mega Man animated series, voiced by Lee Tockar. He came from the future along with Spark Mandrill to steal Lightanium (which, according to Mega Man X, is worth billions in the future) from Dr. Light's newly opened Plasma Power Plant to finance Sigma's war against humanity. He's depicted as near invincible in the cartoon, as Dr. Wily's robots and even Mega Man are no match for him (mostly because Mega Man's cannon couldn't so much as scratch him). However, he himself was no match for X (some lines in the episode heavily implied that Vile had a grudge against him). Vile is depicted as extremely arrogant, looking down on both humans and robots of the present and calling them puny.

He and Spark Mandrill both appear to Wily near the start of the episode and force him into helping them after easily defeating his robots. The two Mavericks later encounter Mega Man and Roll and easily defeat them, but are driven off by Mega Man X, who followed them back from the future. Dr. Wily reveals his plan to rob the Plasma Power Plant to Vile by flooding the plant in belief that it would stop all its defenses. Vile actually likes the plan (commenting it wasn't bad, "for a puny human"), though after breaking a dam and flooding the plant, some defenses were still active. Vile and Spark Mandrill, however, easily break through them. They successfully steal the Lightanium, along with some materials Dr. Wily needed for a new laser weapon. Though Vile got what he came for, he decides to remain in the past a little longer to destroy Mega Man X. Wily unleashes his new laser weapon on Mega Man and Mega Man X, who avoid getting hit by it, and X destroys the weapon with his own version of Snake Man's weapon. Vile and Spark Mandrill open a portal to return to the future with the Lightanium, but X pushes them both through leaving the Lightanium behind.

Aside from more human-like proportional changes, Vile's design is noticeably accurate to his original game design, albeit with a more intimidating appearance overall. Curiously, he makes comments about his "programming" which is ironic because this is not binding for Reploids, whom Vile refers to as "Repliroids", the original Japanese term for Reploids; if anything, this is the exact opposite of his game counterpart who is less bound by his programming via an irreparable short circuit that made him a borderline Maverick.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

Vile first appeared briefly in issue 35 among Sigma's Maverick Hunters. He later appears again as one of the Hunters that fought the Wily Walker and as a Maverick in the crossover Worlds Unite.

Vile battles X in the Rockman X3 manga

In the Rockman X manga, Vile only joined Sigma's forces because he wanted to destroy the legendary "Mega Man", even waiting in the wings and assisting X to grow stronger so he could destroy him when he was worthy of bearing the name.

X tried to face Vile in a highway at the beginning of Sigma's rebellion, but Vile is too powerful for him and escapes. Later, Vile destroys Armored Armadillo and his soldiers, and X finds him in a bar, holding a glass. Vile tells X it would not matter if the glass is filled with Bourbon or mud as Reploids can't tell the difference between their taste, and breaks the glass. Vile explains his objective to take down "Mega Man" and informs X where he can find the Head Parts, and when he goes to his Ride Chaser to leave, X tries to stop him with a charge shot, but Vile stops the shot with only his finger.

When X finds Vile in Sigma's fortress alongside Zero, who was imprisoned by him, Vile is disappointed with X's current state (his X Buster being damaged due to the battle against Boomer Kuwanger) but says that he will fight him as he is anyway, having enough of being nice and patient. Zero breaks free and sacrifices himself to destroy Vile's Ride Armor, and X obtains the Arm Parts that were with Zero, completing his armor. Vile is overjoyed to be finally able to destroy the legend, but despite doing his best to finish Mega Man X, he is unable to harm him. Even when heavily damaged and barely able to walk, Vile slowly approaches X and tries to choke him, and X puts him out of his misery.

Vile is later repaired and reappears in the Rockman X3 manga, watching the battle between the Hunters and the Nightmare Police f the distance and promising that he will be seeing X soon. X encounters Vile MK-II inside Sigma's fortress, where he is playing a piano. Vile tells X that each key makes a different sound, and when combined they make something that the majority considers art. But there are also those who don't agree with the majority, considering it mediocre, not following the flow nor caring for nice words, Vile saying he is like that while breaking the piano's keys. Vile also says that he and X are very different, with X having a nice life while he died and went to hell, becoming a demon. After seeing the way X was behaving, Vile is amused and wonders if it will be a fight between demons, but believes X is no match for him as he was born to be a demon, while X is forcing himself to be one. After an arduous battle that rips through Sigma's fortress, X manages to defeat Vile by grabbing his leg and taking him up to a high tower, and then slamming himself and Vile all the way to the ground.

Vile's personality in the manga Rockman X is depicted somewhat differently than in the games. In the games' continuity, Vile has shown himself to be shrewd and good at setting traps for his enemies, but more often in the manga is Vile calculative, cunning, and calm, and he can easily catch X off guard, yet there are still moments in which his underlying anger boils to the surface. When X encounters him at the abandoned saloon after the battle with Armored Armadillo, Vile mentions to X that he will hunt down all those who bear the name "Rockman" even after he finishes X off once and for all, but he leaves while giving X the coordinates of the next Dr. Light capsule. X tries to shoot Vile as he is leaving, but is stunned with a sense of fear.

Irregular Hunter Rockman X[]

Vile, X and Zero were tasked to stop the Maverick Raigyan β, and Vile almost destroyed X alongside the Maverick, being locked in the Hunter Base for his behavior. Under Sigma's orders, Vile escapes and takes four Hunters with him to cause chaos and distract the Hunters from Sigma's actions. After Sigma is revealed to be the mastermind, Vile and Sigma attack X and Zero and are defeated, retreating and swearing that they will return.

Rockman X The Novel: Irregulars Report[]

Despite not wanting to obey Sigma, Vile decided to join and obey him to have a chance to face the legendary "Mega Man", learning about X's specifications and potential from Sigma and deciding that he will raise X until he was ripe for the slaughter, even thinking of taking down Sigma if he doesn't keep his word of leaving X to him. Sigma assures him that he is only interested in X's potential and the possibilities for evolution, and that if it comes down to a battle, Vile can have X for himself; they then decided to start a rebellion to force X to grow stronger. In the beginning of Sigma's rebellion, Vile tests X in a highway, using a Ride Armor to avoid accidentally killing him, and escapes. Later, Vile knocked down X after he defeat Spark Mandrill, and he destroyed Launch Octopus and gave his weapon chip to X.

After X arrives at Sigma's base, Vile uses Zero as a bait to lure and fight against X with a Ride Armor, thinking that it is time for the long-awaited main dish. Vile is surprised with himself for being able to hold back for so long, but also disappointed that after all the trouble he had X appears all beaten up. To drive X to fight harder, Vile reveals that he was the one who destroyed Armored Armadillo's and Storm Eagle's soldiers, doing it to vent out because of all the holding back, and says he is considering disposing of Zero. Despite X doing his best, he can't defeat Vile who is disappointed, thinking that he might go fight Sigma after destroying X. When Vile is about to give the finishing blow, Zero breaks free and destroys the Ride Armor, and X takes Zero's buster. Vile didn't stand a chance against the powered-up X, but Vile didn't care. The violent battle filled him with joy, going after X with everything he had got to destroy him, but in the end he is the one who is destroyed.

Other appearances[]

Vile (with his original appearance and Ride Armor) also has a brief appearance in the last issue from Dreamwave Productions' Mega Man comic, where he catches X with a cable from his Ride Armor, but Zero appears and saves him, giving X a time machine while he fights against Vile and other Mavericks.

Notes:

  • For X-Buster, the four damage values are listed according to how long the weapon is charged. The first number is damage done with normal shots; the second number is when the weapon is charged slightly (cyan); third number is when the X-Buster is charged even more (yellow); fourth number is when the X-Buster is fully charged with the Arm Parts (pink).
    • Sometimes, an uncharged shot will inflict two units of damage instead of one, if a boss has just started moving or if X fires a shot while he is dashing.
    • The Arm Parts from the First Armor and Zero are the same in the original version, but in Maverick Hunter X, Zero's Arm Parts are stronger.
  • For the eight Special Weapons, the first number is damage done when the weapon is used in normal fire; the second is when the weapon is used in its charged state.
    • For Homing Torpedo, Boomerang Cutter, Storm Tornado and Fire Wave: the secondary fire for these weapons are capable of inflicting multiple hits on a target, so the values listed on the second number is the amount of damage done per hit, not the total amount of damage done.
    • For Chameleon Sting, as the weapon's secondary fire renders X invincible and is incapable of inflicting damage on enemies and bosses, the damage values list only the normal fire of this weapon.

Trivia[]

  • The D-Arts and 66 Action Dash Vile figures come with a glass of Bourbon, an homage to his appearance in the manga, where he tells X it would not matter if the glass is filled with Bourbon or mud as Reploids can't tell the difference between them. Later in Sigma's fortress, Vile asks X if he wants a glass of Bourbon when they started fighting, making a reference to their previous encounter.
    • Similarly, one of the promotional artworks for Vile in D-Arts has him putting his foot on a downed X while standing over both X and Zero, which was a reference to his Vile Mode ending in Maverick Hunter X where he, in an insane rage, abused the defeated X's weakened body.
  • Vile shares similarities with Bass from the classic Mega Man series.
    • Both Vile and Bass are obsessed with defeating the protagonist Mega Man of their respective series.
    • Both Vile and Bass use rapid-fire based weaponry.
    • Both Vile and Bass have gold streamlines across their body.
  • It's commonly speculated amongst the Mega Man community that the character's name was changed from Vava or Baba (as the letters B and V are sometimes interchangeable in Japanese) to Vile for the North American release of Mega Man X because Capcom USA was afraid of being sued by LucasFilm, given the character's resemblance to Boba Fett, a character from the Star Wars universe, especially the helmet with T-visor as well as the fact that VAVA can also be spelled "BABA". However, TOM-PON has stated that "VAVA" is actually in reference to the character Bubba Zanetti (ババ・ザネッティ Baba Zanetti) from the 1979 film Mad Max.[17]
    • His Mega Man X8 color scheme more closely resembles Boba Fett's, which may be in reference to this comparison.
    • Coincidentally, as VAVA is renamed Vile outside Japan, this would also result in Dr. Weil's name being transliterated as such from Dr. Vile in order to avoid confusion with him.
  • An early design of Vile shows him with a "Z" on the forehead of his helmet.[18]
  • Vile is the second-most recurring antagonist in the Mega Man X series next to Sigma, and the first to become a playable character.
  • Vile's weakness in Mega Man X and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is the same as Wolf Sigma's primary weakness from the first Mega Man X game: Rolling Shield.
Vile's unused buster.
  • Unused sprites found in Mega Man X reveal that Vile was originally able to use a buster. However, this was scrapped for unknown reasons.
  • It is unknown how Vile is able to boost in the air and use his dashing move when fighting with X in Mega Man X, as his concept art shows no propulsion outlet at his back. However, two propulsion outlets were added at lower parts of his back pack in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.
The capsule locking Zero in Mega Man X.
  • In Mega Man X, Vile locked Zero inside a capsule that has Sigma's mark on the lower part. This capsule also appears in Mega Man Zero 3 as one of the modifications for the New Resistance Base's elevator.
  • In Project X Zone, it is foreseen in Chapter 37 by Yuri Lowell of Tales of Vesperia that Vile would meet his end the same way his own nemesis Zagi did. Zagi and Vile share similar parallels in that they are both single-minded in the pursuit of their goals and their existence can only truly be defined when they beat their respective rival (Yuri and X). The two villains finally team up in Project X Zone 2, being the wild cards in Ouma's 101 Embryo Project and, eventually, the VA.
  • In the files from the closed beta version of Mega Man X DiVE, Vile was shown to be in his Vile MK-II incarnation with the Goliath Ride Armor. However, in the final version, it is the first version of Vile that appears instead. It could be that the staff intend to show the nature of the story regarding on "bug", hence the formal release feature an X1 Vile piloting his X3 Ride Armor.
