Velguarder (ベルガーダー Berugādā) is Sigma's pet, a wolf-type Reploid[3] or Mechaniloid[4] possessing a ferocious mind circuit, whom Sigma uses to hunt down and terminate those who betray him.[3] As Sigma oversaw his production, the two share several common traits.[3] Similar to Sigma, Velguarder is capable of launching a quick triangular attack, leaping back and forth between the wall, the ceiling and the ground. He is also able to fire powerful flames and ice attacks from his mouth.

In Mega Man X and its remake, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, X must face Velguarder before confronting Sigma himself in Sigma's hideout. Velguarder's weakness in these encounters is Shotgun Ice.

In Mega Man Xtreme 2, Velguarder is the first boss of the final stages, and is weak to X's Ray Claw and Tornado Fang special weapons, and Zero's Rising and Drill Crush techniques.

Other media

Velguarder has a short appearance in the Rockman X manga protecting the door to Sigma's throne room, X alluding the watchdog to a Cerberus protecting the gate to hell. X's fight against Velguarder happens off-panel, the next scene showing X carrying Velguarder's head and crushing it with his foot in front of Sigma.

Velguarder also makes an appearance in the Short Circuits panel for Issue 39 of the Archie Comics Mega Man series, where Sigma presents Velguarder with the implication that the respective robot dogs for Mega Man and Bass, Rush and Treble, were inferior.

Trivia

  • In Mega Man X, if the Hadouken is used just at the exact moment the player regains control of X after Velguarder's intro sequence, he will jump right in front of X as the Hadouken is shot at point-blank, hitting him and ending the battle.
  • Velguarder falls apart with a much shorter, smaller explosion than other bosses in the SNES version, but explodes in the exact way as the other Mavericks in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.
  • Velguarder's flame attack is similar to Friender's in Mega Man 2
