"I'm neither Maverick, nor Rebellion. But if I brought your head to the Rebellion Army, it would fetch a pretty penny!"
―Spider encounter in Central Tower, Mega Man X: Command Mission
"Listen, there isn't really anything complicated about why X decided to make friends with a lowlife bounty hunter like me. It's quite simple, really. Just like why I saved you. 'Cause I felt like it, Zero. That's it."
―Spider, upon saving Zero, Mega Man X: Command Mission

Spider (スパイダー Supaidā) is a mysterious character introduced as an ally in Mega Man X: Command Mission. He is a bounty hunter who fights with playing card projectiles, and joins the Resistance as part of X's party. By the end of the game, however, it is revealed that Spider was a disguise assumed by Colonel Redips, the true antagonist.

Characteristics[]

Spider is a Reploid with black and white armor resembling formal attire, so as to evoke the image of a gambler. His helmet is shaped like a fedora, covering a head of dark blue hair that points upwards behind his head. He has two yellow flaps behind his waist that resemble coattails. His arms are equipped with slots that dispense his signature playing card weapons.

Spider is a cunning bounty hunter who initially values money over all else. He normally has a cool and charismatic personality, but can also be hot-headed and impatient at times. As he works with X, he learns to follow his heart and his principles more than his selfish greed, joining the Resistance for no pay as opposed to joining the Rebellion for a blank check. However, he is only ever seen being used as a disguise for Colonel Redips, meaning these traits may be inaccurate to his true personality.

History[]

Background[]

Spider was a bounty hunter with a reputation in Giga City; at least one Air City resident knew of him, and Wild Jango was also familiar with his work. When Spider met X, he claimed to be an old friend of Aile, though the truth of this is unclear. This is because Spider was once registered in a place that researched copy abilities long ago.[1] When Colonel Redips began plotting to use the Maverick Hunters and to acquire Supra-Force Metal, he used his copy ability to take Spider's form and further his agenda.[2] This leaves the real Spider's whereabouts, and even most of his backstory, completely unknown.

Mega Man X: Command Mission[]

Spider first appears in Air City North Square, hunting X to collect a prize from the Rebellion Army. He briefly fights X until a security alarm goes off, forcing Spider to retreat. He later makes an official deal with Wild Jango in Central Tower to continue hunting X, this time negotiating a blank check. Once X enters Central Tower, Spider attacks again, this time easily getting the upper hand. However, upon seeing the ID lens of his former comrade Aile in X's possession, he chooses to help X and instead turn on his employer.

XCM spider faceturn

Spider chooses to help X.

Spider confronts Wild Jango off-screen, but fails to defeat him. Once X saves Chief R, Jango sends a message using the defeated Spider to taunt him. X faces Jango on the helipad until Spider suddenly appears to help, still injured from his battles. Together, X and Spider destroy Jango and purge Central Tower of Rebellion forces. Spider then officially joins the Resistance.

Arriving at Tianna Camp, Spider complains to X about Chief R's tactics. He also hints that he is still pursuing his own goals by helping the Resistance, besides simply doing what's right. Afterwards, Spider continues to aid the Resistance in X's party. However, he is consistently absent whenever the Resistance receives transmissions from Colonel Redips, something that X notices soon after learning Zero's location. Spider also seems interested in Axl's copy ability, and speaking to Professor Gaudile reveals that Spider has refused to undergo any maintenance since joining the Resistance. Before heading to Gimialla Mine, X notices a suspicious light around a corner, followed by Spider emerging and trying to brush it off.

XCM spider sacrifice

Spider's sacrifice.

In Gimialla Mine, Spider and the party are ambushed by Shadow. After Zero helps defeat him, Spider tanks Shadow's last-ditch attack and destroys him for Zero. This selfless act earns Zero's respect, and despite his injuries, Spider insists on continuing into the mine so he can learn more about the Rebellion's Supra-Force Metal. The party eventually faces Incentas, who locks them in a room with himself. Upon his defeat, Incentas sets the chamber to self-destruct, so Spider chooses to sacrifice himself along with Incentas to blow open the locked gate. Both Reploids are apparently destroyed in the explosion, allowing X and the party to escape to safety. Back at Resistance HQ, they mourn Spider's sacrifice.

However, Spider reappears mostly off-screen in Melda Ore Plant, ambushing and killing Botos for the Supra-Force Metal in the Rebellion's warhead. Afterwards, rumors spreads that Spider has been spotted in Air City.[3]

MMXCM SpiderRevealed

Redips reveals he has been mimicking Spider.

In the final chapter, Colonel Redips reveals that he possesses a Copy Chip and had been using it to take on the form of Spider. He does so by transforming into Spider one last time to attack Zero, before quickly reverting to Redips to continue his plan.

Encounter at Central Tower[]

Weaponry[]

In battle, sometimes he can counterattack the enemy without using the Sub Weapon "Vengeful Counter" and also put into defense automatically without being equipped with the Force Metal "Auto Barrier", which is removed at the end the enemy attack.

Spider uses playing cards as weapons, all of which are Shot type weapons that hit a single target.

  • Diamonds: Attacks with Diamond. With WE at 75% or more, the final blow doubles the zenny of a defeated enemy with Jackpot. This card type increases speed more than the other types.
  • Spades: Attacks with Spade. When Spider's Weapon Energy (WE) is at 75% or more, he attacks all enemies with Spread Deal.
  • Clubs: Attacks with Club. With the WE at 75% or more, Spider hits an enemy twice with Rush. The Power of Clubs are higher than other card types, but they also have the lowest defense.
  • Hearts: Attacks with Heart. With WE at 75% or more, the final blow doubles the EXP of a defeated enemy with Raise.
  • Joker: Randomly produces one of the four special effects from the other card types with any WE amount. Has balanced stats.

Etymology[]

  • Spider's name possibly come from the computer playing card mini-game, Spider Solitaire. This could also explain his weapons of choice. Spider's name spelled backwards is also "Redips", as in Colonel Redips.

Trivia[]

  • There are various hints towards Spider's true identity as Colonel Redips throughout the game:
    • Colonel Redips' communication with X cuts out just before Spider appears for the first time. Afterwards, Spider is absent every time X contacts Redips. X notices this trend before Chapter 5.
    • Upon first reaching Tianna Camp, Spider voices his frustration with being ordered around by the Resistance and implies he is still seeking his own goals.
    • Spider's Hyper Mode, Trickstar, functions the same as Axl's Stealth Mode, rendering him invisible and mostly invulnerable. This foreshadows them both having copy abilities.
    • Upon returning to Central Tower after Axl joins the party, Spider will ironically express gratitude that a shapeshifter like Axl is on their side, lest a double agent infiltrate the Resistance.[4]
    • Before Chapter 6, there is a cutscene showing copy ability light around a corner before Spider emerges to speak to X.
    • After Chapter 6, Prof. Gaudile will mention that he offered to do maintenance on Spider and was met with a hasty refusal, likely in order to avoid having his cover blown.[5]
    • Spider reappears to steal the Supra-Force Metal from Botos in Chapter 8, and afterwards civilians in Air City spread rumors that Spider was spotted in town.
  • A mystery also surrounding Spider and Redips is as to whether Spider really knew Aile, or just simply fabricated/knew and used the story of their past to earn X's trust. On one hand, Spider's turn from Rebellion mercenary to Resistance soldier upon seeing Aile's ID seems to indicate some level of camaraderie. On the other hand, he would later betray the very movement that Aile gave his life for simply to advance his own goals of ultimate power. Depending on when and how Redips got the ability to swap between himself and Spider, either conclusion (or perhaps even both) is entirely possible.
    • Similar can be said of Wild Jango. In the same chapter in which Aile appears, Jango acknowledges Spider by name, as well as showing he was aware of his work, implying the two had a history prior to the events of the game.
    • It is also possible that the Spider that defended X from the Preons was, in fact, the real Spider, and that Colonel Redips replaced him in the fight against Wild Jango. This would explain that Spider was in fact real, but he died trying to protect X, and it would also explain why Wild Jango is rematched at the Far East HQ.
    • Alternatively, at least in the English version, Spider never says Aile's name until after Chief R says it, after Jango is defeated.
  • Spider shares some similarities with Dynamo: both are bounty hunters with dark armor, casual speech patterns, and mysterious final fates.
