"We...We have already strayed from the path. Now all we can do is stay true to our beliefs, wherever they might lead us."
―Soldier Stonekong, Mega Man X7

Soldier Stonekong (ソルジャー・ストンコング Sorujā Sutonkongu) is a gorilla-based Reploid and one of the Mavericks in Mega Man X7, being a member of Red Alert.

History[]

Stonekong was a bounty hunter who was one of the main fighters in the vigilante group Red Alert. He always faced his enemies in fair fights like the honorable warriors of ancient times.[1]

Eventually, the Professor came into contact with Red Alert and used DNA data to greatly enhance the strength of its members, Stonekong included. However, this also made him subservient to the will of the Professor. After Red Alert and the Maverick Hunters went to war against each other, Stonekong traveled to an abandoned mechanical forest and attracted the attention of the Hunters with the deep energy he emitted from there. After engaging them in an honorable duel due to his loyalty for Red Alert, he was destroyed.

Characteristics[]

Soldier Stonekong is a large Reploid with a design reminiscent of a gorilla. His armor is primarily magenta and yellow, and he wears a helmet with large horns and a skull design. He wields a gigantic sword and shield, both made of stone.

Stonekong dwells within the Deep Forest, and has the principles of a medieval knight. He is one of three Red Alert members who is fully aware that he is being manipulated by "the Professor" (the other two being Red and Tornado Tonion). However, unlike the other two, he doesn't seem to regret being used for evil (something noted by and scolded by Axl), as he only fights for loyalty and the sake of battle, not justice. He believed that since Red Alert had already strayed from the path of righteousness, there was nothing left for them but to stay faithful to their principles. He also believed that fighting was the only thing that gave his life meaning.

Stonekong's skills were so great that he even impressed the legendary Maverick Hunter Zero, who described him as being "something else".

As fate would have it, Stonekong ultimately would die in battle against the Maverick Hunters, giving the once-wise warrior an end that he saw fitting, as he yelled "Good job!" when he was slain at the hands of the Hunters.

Strategy[]

Soldier Stonekong has a large stone sword, as well as his Gaea Shield. His battle takes place on what is basically a 2D arena wrapped around in a ring with non-lethal pits of fire. Stonekong runs around this ring with his shield for most of the battle, only stopping to attack. His sword can be targeted and destroyed. He is weak to Explosion/Hadangeki, which knock hims onto his back if he is struck while attacking.

MMX7 SoldierStonekong ShieldAttack Shield Attack (盾攻撃 Tate Kōgeki)[2][3]
Soldier Stonekong deploys his shield to circle the arena before catching it again.

MMX7 SoldierStonekong RockThrow Gaea Shield[2]
Rock Throw (岩投げ Iwa Nage)[3]
Stonekong jumps onto the pillar in the center of the arena, summoning a boulder and throwing it onto the floor. The boulder splits in two, each half flying in opposite directions around the arena, until they explode just before they make contact with each other. This leaves a safe gap between the two where the player can avoid damage.
Damage: 8 (Normal), 16 (Hard)

Dialogues[]

X: Why...Why do you insist on fighting?
Soldier Stonekong: First I ask you! What is strength? What is war?
X: A method for imposing one's will upon another.

Soldier Stonekong: Precisely! Now, no more talk! Let our swords speak for us! Only the victors will be viewed as righteous in the eyes of history.

Zero: You're something else.
Soldier Stonekong: So, you are Zero, the grace of whose attacks is like no other... I am Stonekong. I live only to fight. Just like you.
Zero: No! There's more to life than fighting!

Soldier Stonekong: Silence! I've never seen a battle Reploid as perfect as you. We shall have the fight to end all fights. En garde!

Axl: The great and wise Stonekong. How could you, of all people, do such a thing?!
Soldier Stonekong: We...We have already strayed from the path. Now all we can do is stay true to our beliefs, wherever they might lead us.
Axl: But what Red Alert is doing is wrong.

Soldier Stonekong: I know that! Both you and I know they are being manipulated! I fight for loyalty. Ready yourself!

Production Notes[]

Designer Comments
"I was in charge of Stonekong's design. I was going for the sort of sophisticated design reminiscent of 'X1' and the robot animes from the 80s, the kind of thing the kids love. I was kind of hoping that my design would influence the other designers to an extent, but I came into 'X7' a little late in the game, so it was too late for that." - Tatsuya Yoshikawa [4]

Trivia[]

  • Soldier Stonekong has a brief appearance in the last issue from Dreamwave Productions' Mega Man comic.
