Mothraya (モスラーヤ Mosurāya) is a giant robotic moth originally used for ice breaking before being modified for combat, and is the boss of Cossack Stage 1 in Mega Man 4.

Mega Man 4[]

Attack pattern[]

The arena takes place on two layers of pipes that make up a bridge. Mothraya spends most of the fight simply hovering left and right along the upper area of the screen at a slow speed, bobbing up and down. The red flashing orb below her face is the weak point, though it attacks every 2 seconds by firing an energy shots at Mega Man's position. Mothraya's main method of attack is to use her spike-tipped "proboscis," which has 2 attacks. Her first is to immediately dip down below to floor level, which has no telegraph and serves to surprise Mega Man if he is hiding under her. Her second and more dangerous attack has her stop moving (and stop shooting energy orbs) for a few seconds before slamming her proboscis down below. This is easier telegraphed by the spike shaking, but it actually destroys one chunk of a pipe layer, changing the terrain. If she attacks the same chunk later down the road, it opens up a bottomless pit and can be extremely dangerous for the player, though Mothraya only spikes 3 set areas of the floor (center, middle left, and middle right) throughout the fight. Even with the boss having this limitation, the player should aim to defeat Mothraya as quickly as possible before the terrain becomes more awkward to traverse.

Weaknesses[]

Mothraya's main weakness is Ring Boomerang, which does 4 damage. It will defeat her fast enough that she'll only be able to spike one chunk of the ground before being taken down. If this weapon is not desired, she has several secondary weaknesses: Drill Bomb and Dust Crusher are all serviceable. As with most other bosses, Mothraya takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot and a fully-charged Pharaoh Shot.

Damage data chart[]

Mega Man 4
Mega Buster Flash Stopper Rain Flush Drill Bomb Pharaoh Shot Ring Boomerang Dust Crusher Dive Missile Skull Barrier Wire Adaptor

*For Mega Buster and Pharaoh Shot, the first digit is when the weapon is fired normally and the second is when it is fully charged.

Trivia[]

  • Mothraya's name is a nod to the fictional Japanese movie moth monster, Mothra.
