"Everything belongs to me!"
—Mercury, Mega Man & Bass database

Mercury (マーキュリー Mākyurī) is one of the first four Stardroids that Mega Man must fight in Mega Man V. He is a greedy Stardroid whose body is made of liquid metal, and is thus able to take any form and dismantle himself to attack, similar to the Devil series, and is quick at running away after causing mischief. His main weapon is the Grab Buster, an attack that can steal energy and items from enemies and absorb them to recover his health. Sometimes Mercury also uses the Grab Buster on his allies, and he has a loose tongue, which doesn't give him many friends as a result. He doesn't get along with Pluto, and he hates people who gossip maliciously about him.

Most walkthroughs recommend taking on Mercury first, since not only is he easy to beat with just the Mega Arm, but starting with him first means he won't be able to sap much out of Mega Man (there is only one E-Tank in his stage, which gets broken up into the smaller Mini E-Tanks if it gets drained by Mercury).

Appearance[]

Mercury has a basic humanoid shape. Most of his armor is gooey green, the same substance of the green goop that he can morph into. This includes his parts of his head (his face is still skin-colored), chest, shoulder, hands, biceps, shin, and feet. Mercury also has pink accents in his armor, which include his helmet, forearms, and kneecaps. Mercury's head has a trio of spikes sticking out from each side. His legs are black, and lastly, he has purple grates wrapped around his torso and the base of his neck.

Mercury is part of the first wave of four Stardroids, and defeating him rewards Mega Man with his Grab Buster.

Attack pattern[]

Mercury always starts the fight by firing a flurry of 9 Grab Busters, little sparks that are always aimed in a pattern of straight forward, 23 degrees diagonally up, 45 degrees diagonally up, 23 degrees, straight, 23 degrees, 45 degrees, 23 degrees and straight. As such, only the 1st, 5th, and 9th ones have to be dodged by jumping straight up. If Mega Man gets hit by a Grab Buster, he not only loses a little bit of health but one of his items will get knocked out. These include Mini E-Tanks (bigger E-Tanks get broken up into mini E-Tanks), P-Chips, Weapon Energy, W-Tanks, and even S-Tanks. Mercury stealing an S-Tank can make him very annoying in the rematches if the player is relying on it. Mercury transitions to his next attack if he either got hit during the Grab Buster attack (which stops his assault) or Mega Man lets him finish shooting all nine. Mercury can also be hit just before he fires the first Grab Buster, and if Mega Man can time this consistently, Mercury won't be able to attack with Grab Buster.

This next attack has Mercury become a big goop of liquid, and he can't get hurt in this state. He has 2 patterns while in goop form: the first is to send parts of his body as 3 small goop blobs to bounce thrice to the other side of the room: they move one at a time, and once one blob reaches the corner, the next one follows in suit. All 3 blobs come together to reform Mercury into his humanoid state, where he will attempt to attack with Grab Busters once again. Mercury's second goop pattern is to dash all the way to the other side, though he also drops 2 small blobs along the floor as he dashes, ultimately leaving 3 small blobs on the floor. They wait in place for a couple of seconds (so if Mega Man is in-between them, he can jump over them to a safe area) before reuniting in the corner Mercury dashed to. Mercury always alternates between these 2 goop patterns, but the pattern he does is determined by how he transitions to being in goop form. If he is hit while shooting Grab Busters, he will always do bounce->dash->repeat, but if Mega Man lets him finish shooting all nine, he will always dash.

Weakness[]

Mercury is weak to Black Hole. Although only the giant spiral will hurt Mercury, it is strong enough to kill him in 4 hits. However, this weapon will only be available in the rematches at the Wily Star, due to Mercury being a first wave boss and Saturn (the user of Black Hole) being a second wave boss. Mercury also has a secondary weakness to Salt Water, which does 2 damage and makes Mercury repeat his previous goop attack. As with most bosses, Mercury takes 3 damage from the Mega Arm, which can work just as well and is easier to time when it comes to hitting Mercury before he can use Grab Buster.

MercuryGigamix

Mercury in Rockman Gigamix

Mercury’s visible form is nothing but a temporary construct; his true shape is much akin to a force field. The sentient energy entraps surrounding material within itself and gives it the shape and movement of a person, creating what is called “Mercury” by onlookers. That physical body is little more than a doll; no matter how much damage it is dealt, Mercury himself remains untouched. Although it may appear to be a perfect ability, maintaining the force field in that state takes a tremendous amount of energy, leaving Mercury with little to no extraneous power, be it for attack or defense. The Stardroids’ creators considered this “simple immortality” as a flaw, and attempted to dispose of Mercury, until the development of the Grab Buster provided him with the means to attack while replenishing his energy at the same time, providing him with a practical use. That history of constant threat of disposal is what caused him to develop such a twisted personality. In the manga Mega Man Gigamix, the Stardroids are powerful space robots that are attacking Earth, destroying several robots in the process, with Mercury defeating Yamato Man and Gravity Man. Mercury, Saturn and Uranus fight against Mega Man, Cut Man and Elec Man. The battle is difficult for Mega Man's side as Mercury shows no sign of damage from attacks like the Rolling Cutter and the Super Adapter.[1] When Dr. Cossack's robots appear, Uranus is destroyed and the remaining two Stardroids retreat. When Mega Man and other robots go to space to stop the Stardroids, Mercury, Neptune, and Mars fight against Shadow Man and Proto Man. After Neptune's defeat, Shadow Man and Mercury began falling to Earth, Mercury apparently melting when entering the atmosphere. Quick Man appears with the Mecha Dragon and saves Shadow Man, but Mercury is shown to be still alive and attacks them. Quick Man rapidly slashes Mercury with his giant boomerang, apparently at a speed faster than Mercury is able to regenerate as he is finally destroyed.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

In the Archie Comics Mega Man series, Mercury and his fellow Stardroids are the robotic "children" of the evil Ra Moon.

Trivia[]

  • Mercury is named after the planet Mercury, which is named after the messenger of the gods and god of thieves from Roman mythology. His name may also be based on the element Mercury, as he can become liquid and dismantle himself like the Yellow Devil to attack.
  • Strangely, Mercury likes communism despite being greedy - communism's primary concept is that everything should be seized and distributed fairly, while Mercury only seems to adhere to the first part of this philosophy.
