Mega Man ZX, known in Japan as Rockman ZX (ロックマンゼクス Rokkuman Zekusu) is the first installment of the Mega Man ZX series. It released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on July 6, 2006 and in North America on September 12, 2006. In 2020, it was re-released as part of the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Plot[]

The story takes place over 200 years after the events from the Mega Man Zero series, since Dr. Weil perished on Ragnarok.[1] Nature is healing, and the inhabitants of Earth have rebuilt society to a large extent. Humans (now called Humanoids) and Reploids coexist peacefully, being treated equally thanks to laws that grant humans robotic enhancements and limit the lifespans of Reploids. A powerful corporation called Slither Inc. excavates ruins, offers military protection, and has even solved an energy crisis. However, much of the world is populated by dangerous wild machines called Mavericks, their source unknown. Thus the world is divided into Innerpeace, where it is safe to live, and Outlands, where Mavericks run wild.

There are those that still operate in the Outlands, such as Slither Inc., roaming peacekeepers called the Guardians, and delivery services such as the Giro Express. The player may select one of two protagonists; both are 14-year-old Humanoid orphans raised and employed by the kind Girouette:

The game begins with Vent/Aile and Girouette delivering a package through Area A. They are ambushed by Mavericks, separating them and knocking Vent/Aile off a cliff, where they find Prairie and the Guardians under attack by Giga Aspis. The contents of the package, Biometal Model X, initiates a Megamerge with Vent/Aile to become a Mega Man, granting them power to destroy the Mavericks. They cooperate with the Guardians to reunite with Giro, learning he is secretly a Guardian who wields Model Z.

Eager to help people using Model X, Vent/Aile accompanies Giro to stop a Maverick attack in Area D. However, Giro is attacked by the mysterious Prometheus and Pandora alongside the president of Slither Inc., Serpent. Serpent uses a Model W fragment to brainwash Giro to fight Vent/Aile, then kills Giro and leaves Mavericks to finish Vent/Aile. Desperate, they grab Giro's Model Z and perform a Double Megamerge to become Model ZX.

Using Model ZX, Vent/Aile works with the Guardians to investigate Serpent's intentions. They begin fighting Pseudoroids that each contain a half of the other four Biometals - Model H, Model L, Model F, and Model P - and learn that Serpent is seeking the true core of Model W locked in Area M. They retrieve and complete all four of the other Biometals, and fend off Prometheus and Pandora at Guardian Base. They also learn that Model W was created by one man using the remains of Ragnarok, and that Serpent was once a Guardian who went mad with power and stole it. Vent/Aile move to unlock Area M using the Biometal passwords. However, they are stalled by Prometheus and Pandora, giving Serpent time to reach the Model W core before them and transport it to Slither Inc. head office.

Vent/Aile infiltrates Slither Inc. to destroy the Model W core, but is too late as Serpent feeds it the fear of collected Cyber-elves. Vent/Aile is furious at Serpent for all the suffering he has caused, but their festering hatred is the final key needed to awaken Model W, giving Serpent great power. The six Biometals encourage them to fight on anyway, and they challenge Serpent. Upon defeating him, the tower collapses, apparently destroying the Model W core and killing Serpent. Vent/Aile then reunites with Prairie and the Guardians, and they vow to continue to protect the world.

Gameplay[]

Team Megamen

In clockwise order: Model PX (Aile), Model LX (Aile), Model FX (Vent) and Model HX (Vent).

Vent and Aile use the Meta-Encapsulated Granule Awareness (M.E.G.A.) System (ロックシステム Rebirth Of Crystallized Knowledge (R.O.C.K.) System) to transform using Biometals. One who can use Biometals is called a Mega Man (ロックマン Rokkuman), and the transformation process is known as a Megamerge (ロックオン Rokku on). Because the game did not receive an English dub, Vent/Aile still shout "Rock on!" when they Megamerge.

The player begins the game with Model X, which has the unique power to combine with other Biometals. This is called Double Megamerge (ダブルロックオン Double R.O.C.K. On). Upon obtaining Model Z, Model ZX replaces Model X entirely, though it can be unlocked by completing the game with both characters in Normal or Hard mode. Biometals of the Four Guardians are stored in the eight Pseudoroids, and after being freed, they can be Double Megamerged as well. They can also be upgraded with Energy Crystals. There is also a secret seventh Biometal, Model O. Players can also revert to Humanoid form at any time, who are overall weaker but have some unique abilities of their own.

The Overdrive Invoke System (O.I.S.) is a powered up state that can be activated on the Biometals of the Four Guardians, giving special abilities to the player. Model HX, FX, and LX will give the player elemental attributes to some of their attacks, while Model PX gives the player double damage and intangible dashes. Using Overdrive depletes the BM Gauge.

Forms[]

Humanoid: Vent/Aile's base form. They can't dash, wall kick, or attack at all, but they can crawl through small tunnels and swim on the surfaces of water. They also lose their intimidation factor, letting them avoid some enemies and speak to certain NPCs.
Humanoid
Model X: The "Blue Mega Man", based on the legendary X. It was in a package Vent/Aile was delivering to the Guardians. It grants an X-Buster with a Double Charge Shot function. Model X is replaced by Model ZX, but can be used again after completing the game in Normal or Hard mode.
Model X
Model ZX: The "Ultimate Mega Man", which is the result of Double Megamerging Model X and Model Z. It controls similarly to Zero in the Mega Man Zero series, wielding both a ZX Buster and a ZX Saber. This form completely replaces Model X upon acquisition.
Model ZX
Model HX: The "Wind Mega Man", based on the guardian Sage Harpuia mixed with Model X. It is stored within Hivolt the Raptoroid and Hurricaune the Wolveroid. It grants dual beam sabers and the power to air dash or glide. It also has an Enemy Analysis that shows the health and weakspots of enemies on the touch screen. Its Overdrive gives its attacks a lightning alignment.
Model HX
Model FX: The "Fire Mega Man", based on the guardian Fighting Fefnir mixed with Model X. It is stored within Fistleo the Predatoroid and Flammole the Moleroid. It grants dual arm cannons that are strong enough to break certain obstacles. It also has a Buster Edit that lets the player direct their bullets using the touch screen. Its Overdrive gives its attacks a fire alignment.
Model FX
Model LX: The "Ice Mega Man", based on the guardian Fairy Leviathan mixed with Model X. It is stored within Lurerre the Abysroid and Leganchor the Gelroid. It grants a double-sided halberd and the ability to swim and dash underwater. It also has an Item Scanner that shows the locations of collectible items on the touch screen. Its Overdrive gives its attacks a ice alignment.
Model LX
Model PX: The "Shadow Mega Man", based on the guardian Hidden Phantom mixed with Model X. It is stored within Purprill the Mandroid and Protectos the Goreroid. It grants kunai launchers and the ability to hang from platforms and ceilings. It also has a Radar Scope that shows the locations of enemies on the touch screen. Its Overdrive gives it an attack boost and intangibles dashes.
Model PX
Model OX: A mysterious Biometal derived from Omega, which can only be unlocked by defeating him or the Mutos Reploids in Area N. It plays almost identically to Model ZX, but with an unlimited Overdrive that gives the user a new set of special attacks, each with its own elemental alignment.

References to past games[]

Mega Man[]

  • The Rush Roadster and Red Striker from Mega Man: Battle & Chase appear in Area C, belonging to a pair of twins.
  • An E Tank can be seen in the garbage deposit of Area C. In addition, the player can purchase an E Tank from Cedre, but can only carry one at a time.
  • A W Tank can be obtained by repeatedly attacking the Totten Cyber-elf doll suspended in the ceiling of Prairie's room.

Mega Man X[]

  • A comparison of Area D-2 reveals that it is a recycled version of the Central Highway, the Opening Stage of Mega Man X. The fact that Model X is the only Model acquired prior to the first run of this stage may also be paying homage to Mega Man X. The game's take on its sub-bosses, King Flyers, are similar to the Bee Bladers. Mega Man ZX also mimics the Opening Stage in a way by having Model Z aid Model X.
  • Model X vs. Model Z, followed by Giro's death, is similar to the events from Mega Man X5.
  • The main antagonist Serpent shares many similarities with Sigma, including their ideals with changing the world (and even uttering the line "Evolution requires sacrifice").

Mega Man Zero[]

  • The three-tier boss Life Gauge is based on the same one used throughout the Mega Man Zero series.
  • Energy Crystals return as currency.
  • Model OX and Model W, the Biometals of the final bosses for Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Zero 4, respectively.
  • A discarded Pantheon can be seen in the garbage deposit of Area C.
  • If the player repeatedly talks to Lucia, she will reveal that one of her ancestors was a baker, and will give the player some bread. This is a sly nod to Andrew, one of the members of the Resistance who claims he was once a baker.
  • The track "Fate - deep-seated grudge -" makes a clear reference to Dr. Weil's influence as Model W, being similar to "Fate - Theme of Vile -", Weil's theme in Mega Man Zero 4.
  • The core of the Guardian Base has the same energy design that Ciel was working on in the Zero series.
  • Prairie's room in the Guardian Base contains portraits of Alouette, Ciel, and Zero, and plushies of several Cyber-elves. It also contains Ciel's coat from Mega Man Zero 3.
  • In-game cutscenes depict Ciel and even Zero, albeit from obscured views, along with Pantheon troops.
  • Plushies of various characters appear in the large pile of toys in Area H. Among these specifically are plushies of Cyber-elves, Pantheons, Golems, and Fairy Leviathan.
  • In Area A where the player fights the boss, it looks like Hyleg Ourobockle is in a tree (it can also be noted that his eye lights up and dims constantly, indicating that he may still be alive in some way).
  • In one part of Area I, there appears to be the remains of the Tree of Life, where X's body sealed away the Dark Elf. It also seems that in the background are the remains of the ship Omega was in.
  • In one part of Area F, if the player uses Model F to break away all the ice blocks, Childre Inarabitta's body can be seen hanging upside down.
  • In Area H, Aztec Falcon can be seen in the Carousel.
  • All eight of the Pseudoroid bosses have names that start with letters that correspond to the Biometal (and by extension, the Four Guardians) they were upgraded with. Hivolt and Hurricaune for Biometal H, "Harpuia," Lurerre and Leganchor for Biometal L, "Leviathan," Fistleo and Flammole for Biometal F, "Fefnir," and Purprill and Protectos for Biometal P, "Phantom."

Trivia[]

  • The original Japanese version includes Japanese voice acting for the bosses and in-game cutscenes while scrolling through text boxes. However, the voices were stripped from the American version of the game, with the exceptions of the animated cutscenes and boss fights themselves (and even there, only in Japanese audio instead of translated into English). This was done to avoid confusion between translation dubs. This was corrected in the sequel, Mega Man ZX Advent, which had English voice actor redubs.
  • ZX sounds same as Sechs, which means Six in German. ZX is sixth Mega Man series.
  • Those who ordered the Japanese version got a Rockman ZX Special DVD containing trailers and gameplay footage, and a teaser trailer for the seventh Mega Man series, Mega Man Star Force.
    • This game's commercial and the promo in the Rockman ZX Special DVD are said to have been a pilot of a cancelled Rockman ZX anime.[2]
