"Which weapon do you choose?"
—Mars, Mega Man & Bass database

Mars (マース Māsu) is one of the first four Stardroids that Mega Man must fight in Mega Man V. He is a Stardroid similar to the Robot Masters Napalm Man and Commando Man in that he is a walking weapon - heavily armored and equipped with a variety of deadly weapons. His main weapon is the Photon Missile, a missile that stays in place for about a second before flying horizontally with great power. He also attacks by dropping land mines, launching homing missiles, and firing bullets from his arms. The rollers in his feet also allow him to move at high speed; however, he cannot jump well because of his heavy armor and weaponry.

Despite his intimidating appearance which makes him unable to ride and use airplanes, Mars does have a hearty personality to his allies. He likes survival games, which allow him to make use of all of his weapons, but dislikes surrendering on the field of battle. Due to his predominantly metallic construction, he is highly vulnerable to corrosion, making his weakness the Salt Water.

Mars is part of the first wave of four Stardroids, and defeating him rewards Mega Man with his Photon Missile.

Attack pattern[]

Mars operates within one large pattern that all of his attacks cycle through, and he never deviates from this. He starts the battle by firing 3 Photon Missiles from his head cannon, one at a time. These big missiles are spawned in place for half a second before flying forward at high speed, and can be dodged by jumping over them or sliding under them. Mars's next attack is fire a barrage of bullets forward, telegraphed by him leaning forward. Due to their fast rate of fire, Mega Man shouldn't jump over them and instead counter with his own barrage of buster shots. If Mega Man shoots fast enough, he can damage Mars as both characters shoot barrages at each other. Mars's next attack is to tuck in his head in an invincible "turtle" state (different from when he just lowers his head to fire a Photon Missile, as both his feet point forward) before dashing forward to the left side of the arena. During the dash, he deploys 2 land mines across the ground underneath him, which are placed in the same spots every time. These mines have no explosion like the ones in his stage, unless Mega Man lands on them; they simply disappear after 3 seconds pass. Mars follows this up with a second barrage of bullets. Then, Mars will alternate between shooting one Photon Missile and shooting a homing missile from his back, 2 times each. Despite their homing capabilities, the homing missiles are smaller, slower, and can be destroyed. Before Mars repeats his entire order, his last action is to dash back to the right side, deploying the 2 land mines along the ground.

Weaknesses[]

Mars is weak to Salt Water, which can defeat him in 7 hits. Both the big and small blobs of water do the same damage. It is best used when Mars is using Photon Missiles. However, when he shoots a barrage of bullets, Mega Man should switch to the buster. Mars also has a secondary weakness to Electric Shock, which does 2 damage but can only be used in the rematches. As with most bosses, Mars takes 3 damage from the Mega Arm.

In the manga Mega Man Gigamix, the Stardroids are powerful space robots that are attacking Earth, destroying several robots in the process. Mars was the one who defeated Blizzard Man.[1] He is eventually destroyed by Proto Man, who shoved his arm cannon down Mars's head cannon and fires, blowing Mars's head off.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

The Archie Comics feature Mars and the other Stardroids as creations of Ra Moon, who contacts them to inform them of its defeat at the hands of Mega Man.

Trivia[]

  • Mars is named after the planet Mars, which is named after the Roman god of war of the same name. Undoubtedly, Mars's tank-like design was inspired by his Roman namesake.
  • Mars's bad point in his CD Data, "can't use airplane," might be referring to all the firearms on his body, which are normally banned on public planes.
  • In his official artwork, Mars is orange. However, in the Mega Man & Bass CD Database, his sprite is red.
