Magna Centipede, known in Japan as Magne Hyakulegger (マグネ・ヒャクレッガー Magune Hyakureggā), is a ninja centipede-like Reploid in the Mega Man X series, making his debut in Mega Man X2. He is a former Maverick Hunter who was reprogrammed to serve in Sigma's rebellion.

Characteristics[]

Magna Centipede resembles a humanoid centipede. He has pink wristlike gauntlets and pink armour. His head is pink and where the mouth should be is an orange plate with horizontal (in relation to his face) lines and two pincers surround it. His tail is blue and consists of several orb-like segments with green gems on them and ends in a pincer that allows him to weaken X with a debilitating virus.

Magna Centipede's personality before his brainwashing is unknown. As a Maverick, he is a cold and emotionless killer who would do anything to complete a mission given to him, even destroying former comrades without hesitation.[1]

History[]

Mega Man X2[]

Magna Centipede is a former Maverick Hunter of the Special 0 Unit that was captured by Sigma's forces during Sigma’s first uprising and brainwashed into a Maverick.

Magna Centipede is one of the eight Maverick bosses. He snuck into a computer center where he began transmitting the Maverick Virus around the world. X went to the area to stop the virus and destroyed Magna Centipede, obtaining his Magnet Mine. He is later fought again in the fourth X-Hunter Stage as part of the boss rush.

Mega Man Xtreme[]

Magna Centipede appears as a reproduced boss data inside the Hunter Base's Mother Computer. He is one of the four bosses in Hard Mode. His strategy is exactly like his original battle, and X obtains the Magnet Mine after deleting him.

Strategy[]

Magna Centipede fights like a ninja, standing on the ceiling and teleporting around the arena. His attacks are tricky and require focus to avoid, especially his Magnet Mine. If he infects the player with his virus, it will weaken their abilities with each injection. His weakness is Silk Shot, which shatters his tail to disable his Magnet Mine and Maverick Virus.

X2 Centipede Mine Magnet Mine (マグネットマイン Magunetto Main)[1]
Magna Centipede's tail splits into pieces, with two of them surrounding the player before closing in to stab them. When at low health, this attack is composed of three pieces. Destroying his tail with Silk Shot disables this attack.
Damage: 3
X2 Centipede Shuriken Shuriken (手裏剣 Shuriken)[1]
Magna Centipede throws three shurikens in an arc, often twice in a row.
Damage: 3
X2 Centipede Virus Maverick Virus (イレギュラーウィルス Iregyurā Wirusu)[1]
Magna Centipede magnetically pulls the player in, catching them on his tail to inject a debilitating virus. A single injection disables Charge Shots, a second disables the X-Buster's rapid fire, a third decreases dash distance, and a fourth decreases jump height. The only way to stop these effects is to win the battle. However, the player can destroy Centipede's tail with Silk Shot to disable this attack entirely, or if caught, they can mash buttons to escape before the injection.
Damage: 0

Magna Centipede was one of the many Mavericks revived by Sigma during the Worlds Unite crossover. After an initial assault on the good guys, he is sent to the world of Alex Kidd to plant a Unity Engine when he runs afoul of Alex and Stella. They challenge him to a game of rock-paper-scissors over the engine, but Centipede's multiple limbs give him an unfair advantage. In response to his cheating, Alex and Stella smash him to pieces.

Etymology[]

  • The first part of his Japanese name, Magne (マグネ Magune), derived from Magnet (マグネット Magunetto).
    • His name is changed from "Magne" (マグネ Magune) to "Magna" in English, possibly so that English speakers would not think the word was supposed to rhyme with "knee."
  • The second part of his Japanese name, Hyakulegger (ヒャクレッガー Hyakureggā), is a portmanteau of Hyaku ( Hyaku, "hundred") and "legger", meaning "Hundred-legged", similar to the composition of the word "centipede": Latin centi- ("hundred") + pes ("foot").
    • The name "Hyakulegger" was chosen because it was believed that Japanese children at the time would not know the word "centipede".[2]

Trivia[]

  • The area where the X-Hunters were spying on X early in the game is Magna Centipede's stage. This is also the last stage, where X fights against Sigma in a room below where the Chop Register appears. Because of this, the player can't fully revisit Magna Centipede's stage once all four X-Hunter Stages are cleared.
  • Magna Centipede is the second Maverick boss to have more than two arms, having four (or five counting his tail) in total. Launch Octopus from the first game, who has six tentacles for arms, is the first to have more than two arms. Volt Kraken in Mega Man X5 could count as the third although all but two of his arms have no hands.
    • Out of these, Magna Centipede is the only Maverick boss to be based on an arthropod.
  • Centipede and all the other known former members of the 0th Special Unit are all arthropods, save for Zero himself.
