Gravity Beetle, known as Gravity Beetbood (グラビティ・ビートブード) in Japan, is a Japanese rhinoceros beetle-themed Reploid and one of the Maverick bosses in Mega Man X3. He is a former Maverick Hunter who joined the Doppler Army.

Characteristics[]

Gravity Beetle has a stocky, blue body modeled after a rhinoceros beetle. He possesses the giant horns of said beetle, as well as antennae on his face and a large elytron on his back. In his intro FMV, Beetle is also shown to possess wings underneath, though he does not use them in his boss battle.

Little is known about Gravity Beetle's personality. He is very loyal to his brother, Boomer Kuwanger, going as far as to betray the Maverick Hunters to avenge his death.

History[]

Gravity Beetle was originally a Maverick Hunter assigned to the 17th Unit. He was the brother of Boomer Kuwanger.[note 1] After Kuwanger's death at the hands of X during Sigma's initial rebellion, Beetle wanted to avenge him. Upon learning of Dr. Doppler's new rebellion in Dopple Town, Beetle abandoned his post, hijacking a transport from Hunter Base and converting it into an aerial fortress to join Doppler's forces. He then assaulted airfields in the area and transported supplies from the weapons factory, goading X into a fight to the death, which he ultimately lost, relinquishing his Gravity Well.[1]

Strategy[]

Gravity Beetle is quite slow and predictable, but his attacks are strong enough to make up for that. He has a hefty jump and an invincible dash attack, and throws Gravity Wells to control the arena. When at low health, he charges his Gravity Well to summon a giant black hole that covers the entire top of the arena and increases his jump height. His weakness is Ray Splasher, though it does not stun him for long.

Gravity Well (バグホール Bagu Hōru, "Bug Hole")[2]
Gravity Beetle throws two dark balls that bounce off the walls. They start out small, increasing in size every time they bounce.
Beetle also uses the charged version of this weapon when at low health, forming a black hole at the top of the room that increases his jump height and damages the player on contact.
Damage: 2 (small), 4 (medium), 8 (large), 8 (charged)

Gravity Beetle becomes invincible and rushes forwards with his horn. On contact with his horn, he launches the player into the ceiling.

Rockman X3 (manga)[]

In the Rockman X3 manga, Gravity Beetle wanted to avenge his brother Boomer Kuwanger and Dr. Doppler convinces him to work for him. Gravity Beetle revived Boomer Kuwanger and they attack a city with the combat aircraft carrier Big Beetle. He captures X and Zero, and attempts to transfer Boomer Kuwanger's program into Zero's body. X fights against the brothers to save Zero, and used one of the Gravity Holes fired by Gravity Beetle to destroy Boomer Kuwanger. The Gravity Hole goes out of the Big Beetle and transforms into a giant black hole with an image of Boomer Kuwanger's head inside. X destroyed the black hole by connecting cables of the Big Beetle into his buster to fire a powerful charged shot. In the end, X and Zero forgave Gravity Beetle.

Rockman X Mega Mission 2[]

In Rockman X Mega Mission 2, Gravity Beetle was revived as Gravity Beetbood L, becoming stronger with a changed appearance, this time resembling a Hercules beetle. He was defeated by X with Ray Splasher.

Archie Comics[]

Gravity Beetle appears in a flashback as a Maverick Hunter in the 17th Elite Unit, alongside his brother Boomer Kuwanger and their commander Sigma. He was also later featured as one of dozens of Mavericks revived by Sigma during the events of Worlds Unite.

Trivia[]

  • A similar boss first appeared in Mega Man Zero, called Herculious Anchus. Both are Reploids based on hercules beetles, and both have brothers based on stag beetles (Boomer Kuwanger for Gravity Beetle, and Kuwagust Anchus for Herculious Anchus).
  • Gravity Beetle, along with Blizzard Buffalo, Crush Crawfish, and Toxic Seahorse, are the only Mavericks from Mega Man X3 that never appear in the Mega Man Xtreme sub-series.
  • Gravity Beetle's intro FMV in Mega Man X3 has an animation error where the whites of his eyes are not colored in, making them dark blue like the background.
  • Gravity Beetle is one of the six Mavericks of the Rockman X3 manga to survive and reform. He is the only one of the six to not return to help in the battle against Doppler in the final chapters, however.

Notes[]

  1. Gravity Beetle's relationship to Boomer Kuwanger is different depending on the source: Compendium of Rockman X calls Beetle his younger brother, while The Mega Man Network web archive: Rockman X3 Collected Sourcebook Information calls Beetle his older brother. The Mega Man X Legacy Collection Gallery simply calls Beetle a "fellow beetle Reploid".
