"Reach the satellite using the Elevator and find Sigma."
—Stage description

Jakob (ヤコブ Yakobu) is a stage and setting important to the plot in Mega Man X8. It's an orbital elevator built in the Galápagos Islands as part of the Jakob Project.

History[]

Jakob was created as part of the Jakob Project, meant to help the humans migrate to the Moon in order to escape the never-ending carnage of the Maverick Wars. Many New Generation Reploids were specifically created and assigned to aid in the worldwide effort. A space station port called Gateway was also constructed to connect Jakob and the Moon.

It appears that there are two kinds of elevators on Jakob: the large interior column with a platform meant for materials transport, and a spiraling track on the exterior for smaller cars built for personnel transport. One of these smaller cars falls off of Jakob in an accident prior to the events of Mega Man X8, though the New Generation Reploids within are able to transform into Sigma to survive the impact.

The Reploid in charge of the project, Lumine, was captured by Vile at the beginning of the game, and Sigma and his Maverick forces took control of the Jakob Project. After defeating the eight bosses, the Maverick Hunters used the elevator to reach the Moon to fight Sigma. At the top of the elevator, they were intercepted by Vile and fought him off. After crossing through the Gateway and destroying Vile, Sigma, and the traitorous Lumine on the Moon, the Hunters returned to Earth via the elevator.

X8 Jakob Preview

The Jakob stage is set inside the elevator, with the Maverick Hunters fighting against aerial enemies as it ascends. The elevator periodically stops at areas with doors, with Guardroids appearing to attack:

  1. Three standard Guardroids
  2. Three Guardroid LIGs (with shield)
  3. Four Guardroid LIGs (with saber)
  4. Five Guardroid LIGs (shield x2, saber x2, gun x1)
  5. Three Guardroid KNIs (bazooka)
  6. Four Guardroid KNIs (shield x3, bazooka x1)
  7. Four Guardroid KNIs (homing missile)
  8. Nine Guardroid KNIs (bazookas, homing missiles, and shields)

An easy way to pass the stage is to remain on the center of the elevator as Zero and spam Rasetsusen with the D Glaive equipped. After reaching the top, Vile appears to confront the Hunters.

Mega Man X DiVE[]

Jakob Orbital Elevator is a section of the Deep Log appearing as a challenge stage as opposed to an orbital transport system. It is divided into several levels, with 5 added in some updates. One notable difference it displays from the one in X8 is that the elevator platform is wider with no danger of falling off from the sides. Moreover, irregularities in Deep Log space make it project certain environments in set floor levels.

Etymology[]

In the Bible, Jacob dreamed of seeing angels climb up a winding stairway leading up to Heaven. This stairway was called "Jacob's Ladder".

Trivia[]

  • Because the Neo Arcadia Tower from Mega Man Zero used to be an orbital elevator that was destroyed in the Maverick Wars and later repaired by Neo Arcadia, it's often speculated that it was Jakob. But, there is no confirmation they are the same tower, possibly being any other orbital elevator built between the series (including Babel from Mega Man X: Command Mission).
    • Since the Jakob Elevator was last seen intact in Mega Man X8, it's unlikely to be the same tower.
  • This stage and Burn Rooster's, Avalanche Yeti's, and Gigabolt Man-O-War's stages are the only stages whose starting areas X and company cannot stay at for as long as the player pleases in Mega Man X8.
