"You've labeled us all as Mavericks! I won't let you pass. Turn back now!"
―Web Spider, Mega Man X4

Web Spider, known as Web Spidus (ウェブ・スパイダス Webu Supaidasu) in Japan, is a spider-based Reploid from Mega Man X4 that works for Repliforce as the commander of their guerrilla unit.

History[]

Spider was once a Maverick Hunter, belonging to the 0th Special Unit and serving as the comrade of Zero, the unit's leader. Spider then transferred into Repliforce later on to lead their commando division. Spider was a superb soldier who earned multiple honors for excellent service.[1]

When Repliforce began their war for independence and was considered a Maverick group, he remained loyal and was stationed in the jungle, charged with guarding a powerful beam cannon hidden there. The Hunters later confronted their former colleague at the jungle, and were forced to destroy him after which they disarmed the beam cannon.

Characteristics[]

Web Spider is a Reploid with the body of a spider. His head possesses large pincers, and one of his eyes is shaped into a scope-like lens. His armor is mostly green and yellow in color, and he wears a blue beret on his head.

He is a cynical soldier who serves his employers dutifully. He appears to respect soldiers more than their superiors, and believes that warriors such as himself, X, and Zero are doomed to serve.

Strategy[]

Web Spider has a relatively simple battle which consists of two phases. In the first, he regularly descends and ascends through the canopy, throwing Lightning Webs at the player before retreating. Web Spider's weakness is X's Twin Slasher, which severs his string and makes him fall on the floor. Zero's Shippuuga does not have the same effect and is difficult to hit him with, so he is better off using Ryuenjin or Kuuenzan.

Once he is below half health, Web Spider will create a giant web in the middle of the screen to stand on (it does not harm the player). From the web, he continues to throw Lightning Webs and now ejects tiny spiders too. Being closer to the ground makes him an easier target, but also more dangerous as he skitters around the web. Twin Slasher no longer knocks him down in this phase.

Manga-exclusive Abilities[]

These are abilities that Web Spider only displayed in the Rockman X4 manga.

Web Spider Zombie Army Necromancy
Web Spider reanimates the bodies of Reploids he killed and uses them to attack his opponents, with the mindless Reploids' arsenal being fully available to him. In the manga, Spider used the bodies of an Advanced Survey Team of Reploids he killed in the Kagikira Jungle to attack X. X likened the reanimated Reploids to zombies.
Web Spider Webbing Trap Webbing Trap
Web Spider launches a blast of thick webbing from his mouth, which is strong enough to fully ensnare and immobilize an opponent, thus giving Spider an opening to launch a barrage of attacks.
Web Spider Claw Attack Tarsal Claw Assault
Web Spider uses his tarsal claws to perform sharp slashing attacks against his opponent, similar to the usage of combat knives.

Rockman X4 (manga)[]

"They're not going to end... the conflict you speak of will never go away... as long as humans are imperfect, it stands to reason that we, created by humans, are also imperfect... as long as humans continue to deny this natural outcome as Irregular, and as long as we live in a world where pseudo-heroes like you are born, we will continue to cry out for the independence of Reploids... our relationship with humans was predetermined from the moment our first unit was invented. We Reploids are mechanical puppets that wander through endless hell while in this world..."
―Web Spider's dying words to X.
X4 Web Spider defeated

The lamentations of a defeated soldier. "The conflict you speak of will never go away..."

Web Spider appears in the Rockman X4 manga where he is the first member of the Repliforce fought by X. Spider first appears on the stage at Repliforce's Memorial Hall along with his fellow sub-commanders during General's speech announcing that Repliforce will secede and become an independent organization.

Spider used to be a Maverick Hunter and a colleague of Zero's before transferring to Repliforce, and just like in the game, he is stationed in the jungle guarding Repliforce's giant beam cannon weapon. However, he is planning on using it to burn down a nearby city and kill the humans residing there, and he ruthlessly slaughters a group of Maverick Hunters who went to investigate the weapon in the Kagikira Forest. X shows up to look for the missing investigation team that Spider slaughtered, and Web Spider reanimates their corpses to attack X. However, X decided to take their attacks until they run out of ammo which they eventually do. Web Spider then reveals himself, and says that Zero was right to call X naive. X then asks if Zero has come by the forest, and Spider realizes that X doesn't know that Spider used to be a Hunter who served with Zero and thus decides to manipulate the situation. Spider falsely says that Zero has turned traitor and joined the Repliforce. Spider says this to get X angry and thus sloppy in battle.

Then, Spider battles X and gets the upper hand, and gloats about how the weapon he will use to burn down the city and kill the humans with cannot be stopped unless Spider is killed first. He calls the weapon "the anger of the soldiers", and proclaims that it will avenge the anger and pain of Repliforce's soldiers for being branded as Mavericks by the human government. Not wanting to see so many people die, an enraged X breaks free of Spider's Lightning Web attack, and mortally wounds him with a Charged Buster shot. The beam cannon is deactivated, and while dying, Spider laments about how he feels that meaningless battles between Reploids and humans, as well as among Reploids themselves, will never end. He argues that because humans are flawed creatures, it was only natural that Reploids would be flawed as well since humans created them. He explains he went along with Repliforce's coup for independence because he didn't want Reploids to be doomed as "mechanical puppets" wandering in an "endless hell".

Archie Comics[]

Web Spider appears in the Worlds Unite crossover event as one of the many Mega Man X characters featured in the Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Boom comics. He is one of many Mavericks who appears alongside Sigma-2, having been resurrected as part of a Maverick army that is deployed to attack various worlds.

Trivia[]

  • Web Spider is similar to Bospider in appearance. His Baby Spider Attack also involves throwing out small spiders that scuttle along the floor and walls, reminiscent to Bospider as well.
  • If the player shoots a charged Twin Slasher at Web Spider when the battle starts, a glitch occurs where the player cannot attack him, forcing them to restart the battle.
  • Although he is one of several Mavericks that are based on arthropods, Web Spider is the only arachnid Reploid in the Mega Man X series.
