Σ Chip in Mega Mission 3

The Σ Chip (Σチップ, Shiguma Chippu), also written as Sigma Chip, is a computer chip created by Sigma's Maverick armies in the Mega Man X series.

Characteristics

The chip has an octogonal format with purple, rectangular edges on the sides. The chip has Sigma's symbol in it, making it easily recognizable. Its appearance is similar in the Rockman X2 manga, with smaller rectangular edges.

History

Mega Man X2

Though Sigma Chips are not seen or mentioned in-game, supplemental materials reveal that Mavericks with chips bearing Sigma's logo were discovered shortly before the X-Hunters began their uprising. These chips do not turn Reploids into Mavericks; rather, they are branding for Mavericks created by Maverick factories. Dr. Cain traces the microchips to a factory, which X infiltrates and destroys at the beginning of the game.

Sigma Chip in the manga

The manga goes into much further detail on the existence of Sigma Chips. X first finds a Sigma Chip after punching through a Maverick that bombed a building. He analyzes the chip at Hunter Base, finding it filled with anger, murderous intent, and anti-human prejudice. He also sees an apparition of Sigma briefly emerge from the chip. X pinpoints its origin at Wilon Plant and considers investigating, but is interrupted by a call from Boy.

When the mission goes wrong, X rushes to Wilon Plant to stop the production of Sigma Chips. There he fights the Gigantic Mechaniloid CF-0 and supposedly destroys all the Sigma Chips there.

After the reborn Zero was captured by Sigma, a Sigma Chip was installed in his forehead to make him a Maverick. Zero's armor becomes black and his power increases, but he is difficult to control, even destroying Serges before fighting X. His forehead is damaged during the battle and Zero returns to normal for a brief moment, but the chip is still active and his armor becomes black again. When Zero destroys X's armor, he believes that he destroyed his friend and tries to kill himself, but X stops him and destroys the Sigma Chip for him by punching his forehead.

Rockman X Mega Mission 3: VS Hyper Limited

Enemice-HL reveals the Sigma Chip in his possession when he is cornered by the combined efforts of X, Zero, and Return X (who had transformed himself into an armor for the duo). It contains all of Sigma's data, and Enemice attempts to use it as his trump card to obtain Sigma's destructive power. However, upon taking Sigma's form, his mind is completely replaced to create a copy called Sigma Limited. The copy is then destroyed by X and Zero.
