This article is about the NetNavi ShadowMan.EXE. For others, see Shadow Man (disambiguation).
"Ha ha ha. ShadowMan is on the scene!"
―ShadowMan, Mega Man Network Transmission

ShadowMan.EXE (シャドーマン.EXE[1][2] Shadōman Eguze) is a dark assassin ninja NetNavi operated by Dusk. He first appeared as an optional boss in the first Mega Man Battle Network, becomes a antagonist working for Gospel in Mega Man Battle Network 2, then an ally joining Team Colonel in Mega Man Battle Network 5.

Appearance[]

Like his original counterpart, ShadowMan.EXE resembles the traditional ninja in popular culture, wearing a dark purple outfit with silver socks and black sandals. His face is covered by a mask, he has a shuriken ornament on his forehead, his elbows have spikes, and he wears a red scarf. His Navi mark is on the left of his chest. As he is a NetNavi, the fabric of his clothes does not wrinkle. He carries a katana on his back.

Navi mark[]

ShadowMan has a Navi mark showing a black caltrop on a yellow background.

Personality[]

ShadowMan is the NetNavi of the famous mercenary, Dusk. ShadowMan is one of the most feared Navis on the net, but only to the select few that have heard of or experienced his exploits. His operator is extremely secretive, and little is known about either him or his Navi except they'll do anything for enough money. For ShadowMan, "anything" means what it means, because almost nothing is impossible for this highly skilled assassin (except trying to delete MegaMan).

His Muramasa Blade, cursed though it may be, gains strength as he gains damage, so even if he is in a tight spot, he can get the advantage back quite quickly. With his nearly impenetrable AntiDamage defense, it's rare he ever has to use the blade, since enemies often attack illusions instead of the real ShadowMan, or have to fight minions provided by whoever hired him. If they do successfully attack the real ShadowMan, he then resorts to sending out his cronies, which often causes difficult situations.

He has a lot of ingenuity and resources, so deleting Navis isn't the only job he's suited for. Because of his skill and power, ShadowMan is very confident and never takes his job seriously. He's very anti-social since he considers most Navis inferior to himself, and would sooner delete anyone he comes across. He doesn't believe in doing "freebies".

History[]

Mega Man Battle Network[]

ShadowMan is a secret boss in Mega Man Battle Network. He is located near the end of Undernet 11 and will only appear if the player has collected at least 140 different Battle Chips in their library. It is mentioned in Mega Man Battle Network 6 that Dusk and ShadowMan have great experience of being in the Undernet.

Mega Man Network Transmission[]

ShadowManEXE Intro

ShadowMan, before battle.

ShadowMan appears in this game as the NetNavi boss in the Vacant WWW Comp. Before Lan Hikari and MegaMan arrive, ShadowMan destroys the AuthCode, which is needed to access the Undernet. MegaMan and ShadowMan then battle. After ShadowMan is defeated, MegaMan retrieves the broken bits of the AuthCode (DestrDat).

MegaMan can slide under ShadowMan's legs to avoid attacks. Most of ShadowMan's attacks can be avoided by sliding, especially the smaller Shurikens. The larger Fūsha can usually be dodged by jumping over it. After defeating ShadowMan, the player will receive either a Muramasa Battle Chip or a ShadowMan Battle Chip.

Mega Man Battle Network 2[]

ShadowMan was hiding in the Undernet but was pulled out of the shadows when he was hired by the Netmafia, Gospel [3]. His mission was to annihilate YumLand and it's King's NetNavi CookMan, and then later to destroy Electopia through the Official Center. He was successful in the destruction of YumLand, but was thwarted by Mega Man in his attempt to destroy Electopia, with help from ProtoMan.

Mega Man Battle Network 5[]

In this game, he is discovered by Colonel and was asked to join Team Colonel. He helped the team with his speed and agility.

ShadowManPETMenuEXE45

ShadowMan in the PET.

ShadowMan is an unlockable (with Battle Chip Gate) playable character. His theme is a remix from his Robot Master's counterpart's stage from Rockman 3: Dr. Wily no Saigo!?

As a Mercenary Navi, only he will allow the player to receive mails about Assasination Requests once per day as long as he remains in the player's PET.

ShadowMan is equipped with a Special Program that allows the use of the Invisible without the need of its respective Battle Chip, but it decreases the Custom Gauge a little. It's other Special Program is the characteristic Shuriken, which consists in throwing a shuriken at a targeted opponent. He can increase his max HP if the player completes the Assasination missions and if the player beats the Sniper Training minigames that can be found in Mystery Data.

He can also open the highly-complex ? Security Gates on the Internet.

ShadowMan in the anime.

ShadowMan appeared in the second part of the MegaMan NT Warrior series as a hired gun of Grave to protect a virus factory hidden under NetCity. He was also hired to delete KnightMan, who was the Anti-Virus Program Princess Pride and her kingdom were working on. Having his plans foiled by MegaMan, he meets the injured FreezeMan after his battle with HeatMan. Saying he lost his worth, ShadowMan eliminated FreezeMan on the spot.

In MegaMan NT Warrior Axess, ShadowMan is hired by Dr. Regal to destroy the Control X systems. Regal mentions that he'd been unable to locate his operator to send his paying, to which ShadowMan did not comment on. When going to the Control X from an airplane terminal, he was given Dark Chips to finish the job, but said he did not need them. However, when he is overwhelmed by MegaMan, he changed his mind and made use of a Dark Chip, exponentially increasing his power. Still, being under the watchful eye of SearchMan, he had his arms blown off by the sniper, and was eventually deleted by him. Code of Conduct

Manga[]

MegaMan NT Warrior[]

ShadowMan

ShadowMan in the manga.

ShadowMan did not serve a major role in the manga. His personality is also vastly different from the game. He is reserved and much more respectful to others, both human and Navi alike. He first appears when Lan, NumberMan, and ProtoMan went into Undernet to retrieve MegaMan and easily defeats ProtoMan. Noticing that Lan is a human and interested by the fact that a human went as far as entering the Cyberworld to retrieve a near-deleted Navi, he creates the illusion of MegaMan surrounded by fire. Seeing Lan jumping without hesitation to save MegaMan and MegaMan being recovered as the result, ShadowMan ponders that he wishes to test their strength next time. In volume 3, he senses a great energy and saves MegaMan and Lan from Bass, though he later revealed that it was Bass himself who spared them, and warns them that many Undernet Navis will come after them since they are the first ones to survive a battle against Bass. He then gives them a map that contains a clue for them to become stronger before leaving. In volume 11, ShadowMan was shown in a bonus story as a member of Team Colonel, fighting against Devil Virus.

Abilities[]

In Mega Man Network Transmission BradyGames Strategy Guide and Mega Man Battle Network 5 BradyGames Strategy Guide, ShadowMan's attack names are left in their original Japanese instead of being translated like other Navis.

ShadowMan

ShadowMan's Navi mark

  • Bunshin (ブンシン[4] Bunshin, "Copies"):
ShadowMan often appears with one or two clones as soon as the battle starts. The clones can mimic his attacks, and can dissipate after being hit with a Buster shot. They regenerate after some time passes.
    • Split Up (ブンシンギリ[5] Bunshin Giri, "Copy Slash"):
EXE4.5 and BN5 only. ShadowMan's clone attacks the enemy in his place. In BN5 this is his Special Chip.
  • Shadow[6] known as Kage Bunshin (カゲブンシン Kage Bunshin, "Shadow Copy") in Japan[7][8]:
ShadowMan summons 2 blue-colored clones on MegaMan’s side, these clones will only disappear if they are hit by a Sword chip. In Phantom of Network, he skips the summons clones portion and just sends a same-colored clone to slash MegaMan.
    • Shadow's Sword, known as Kage Bunshin's Sword (カゲブンシンのソード Kage Bunshin no Sōdo, "Shadow Copy's Sword") in Japan[9]:
Occasionally, if MegaMan is close enough, ShadowMan's shadow clones will slash at him with their swords.
  • Bakufu (爆風 Bakufū, "Explosive Wind Blast")/ Katon No Jutsu (カトンノジュツ Katon No Jutsu, "Fireball Technique")[10]:
ShadowMan shoots an elementless explosion along his row. His clones will do the same in their rows if they are present.
  • Bakuen (バクエン[5] Bakuen, "Explosive Fire Blast"):
ShadowMan shoots a Fire explosion along his row. His clones will do the same in their rows if they are present.
  • Shuriken/Ninja Star (手裏剣シュリケン[5][11]):
ShadowMan disappears from the stage in a puff of smoke and shoots shuriken from the sky. This is also his Charge Shot move.
  • AntiDamage Magic (カワリミマジック Kawarimi Majikku,
    Kawarimi Magic, "Body Double Magic")
    :
Sometimes, ShadowMan will disappear after MegaMan seemingly lands an attack on him and immediately performs his shuriken attack. This is his B+Left technique. This is called Kawarimi Shuriken (カワリミシュリケン Kawarimi Shuriken) in Rockman.EXE Character Encyclopedia and EXE4.5 Official Kanzen Guide.
  • Muramasa (ムラマサ Muramasa):
BN2 only. If his HP is low enough, ShadowMan will appear near MegaMan and slash him with the Muramasa, dealing damage equal to the amount of HP he has lost so far (it can go over 1000 damage). Used only in his V2 and V3 forms.
  • Sneak Attack (闇討ち/やみうち Yamiuchi, "Surprise from the Dark"):
If ShadowMan is in low health, he will teleport behind MegaMan and slashes him. This is also ShadowMan’s Liberation Mission ability. If he is next to an enemy, he can deal damage onto them without entering battle.
  • WaterBug (ミズスマシ Mizusumashi, "Water Spider"):
Cutscene only. ShadowMan equips a pair of Mizugumo (mud shoes) to stand on cyber clouds and cross over to the other side.
  • SmokeBomb (ケムリダマ Kemuridama, "Smoke Ball"):
BN5DS Support only. When his ally's HP drops to red, ShadowMan will blast the field with smoke and inflict status effects to all the enemies.
  • Navi Scout (ナビスカウト Nabi Sukauto):
    EXE4.5 only.

Mega Man Network Transmission [11][]

  • Oboro (オボロ Oboro, "Haze"):
ShadowMan creates two copies of himself; the real one attacks MegaMan with his sword. He will sometimes do it without creating copies.
  • Fuusha (フウシャ Fuusha, "Windmill"):
ShadowMan tosses a large ninja star with a slight arc to its path.
  • Shadow Slash (シャドースラッシュ Shadō Surasshu):
ShadowMan runs forward slightly, then jumps before coming down on you with a slash from his katana.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version, before executing his jutsu or preparing for battle, ShadowMan uses the Nine Hand Seals, "Rin Pyo To Sha Kai Jin Retsu Zai Zen!" (リン・ピョウ・トウ・シャ・カイ・ジン・レツ・ザイ・ゼン!). In the English game, this became simply as "One, two, three...".
  • ShadowMan is shown to have very weak armor, as a minor wound (like a cut on his headgear) can cause it to fall off, and that he has particularly lower health compared to other bosses. This is probably another reference to his ninja-like theme, as ninjas rely on stealth and speed to defeat their enemies, not brute strength or heavy armor.
  • Along with Roll and ElecMan (in EXE4.5), he is one of the few Navis who walk on foot outside battles, but levitate in the battlefield, with levitating abilities such as Air Shoes and Float Shoes included.
  • ShadowMan's voice actor is Kentarō Itō, who also provided the voice of X in Rockman X4 and Warrock in the Shooting Star Rockman series.
