"Nippon Banzai!"
―Yamato Man, Mega Man: Robot Master Field Guide

Yamato Man (ヤマトマン Yamatoman) is a combat Robot Master from Mega Man 6 who was modeled after a samurai warrior. Although his armor appears to be heavy, it was made thin and as light as possible to improve his mobility, but at the cost of reducing his defense. Yamato Man's Special Weapon is the Yamato Spear, which he uses to throw armor-piercing spear heads at enemies. However, he has a short supply of ammo, and has to manually pick them up after use so he can throw them again. As a backup means of attack, Yamato Man is a skilled martial artist, and always carries a spear with him for both defensive and close combat purposes.

Personality[]

Although somewhat shy and being unable to handle money correctly, Yamato Man has the Japanese spirit and holds great respect for Knight Man due to the latter's own valor and honor in battle. He enjoys collecting Japanese swords in his spare time, but dislikes speaking the English language.

Video game appearances[]

Mega Man 6[]

In the First Annual Robot Tournament, Yamato Man was stolen and reprogrammed by Mr. X to help him conquer the world. Yamato Man is one of the eight Robot Masters, and defeating him will reward Mega Man with Yamato Spear. If not for his short stock of spear heads, Yamato Man would be a much more difficult enemy to defeat.

Attack pattern[]

Yamato Man only has two actions, which he can use semi-randomly. If he does one action twice in a row, he will always do the other action, making him a bit predictable. His first is to spin his spear in place, immediately launching a spearhead forward in a straight line. The spearhead stops moving if it hits a wall or if it hits Mega Man, either collision drops the spear to the ground. Once it drops to the ground, Yamato Man runs to it to pick it up. His second action is to jump high in the air while spinning his spear, generally aiming to land on Mega Man's position. At the apex of his jump, he fires out 3 spearheads in 3-way spread. The center spearhead is loosely aimed at Mega Man's position and the other two fly away from the center spearhead. It is set up to hit Mega Man if he tries sliding away from the spears. The easiest strategy to defeat Yamato Man without having to anticipate his attacks is to jump straight up while in front of him: this jump automatically dodges the single spearhead thrown forward and the close distance means Yamato Man will not jump very far, making the triple spears easy to bait underneath him.

Weakness[]

Yamato Man is weak to Silver Tomahawk, which defeats him in 7 hits. As with all bosses, Yamato Man takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot. He also takes 2 damage and knockback from a fully-charged Power Adaptor punch, though if he is knocked back while a spearhead is on the ground, he will still run to it afterwards.

Rockman Strategy[]

Yamato Man appears twice in this game, the first time being aboard Scorpio's airship with Cloud Man. His second appearance is in a chemical plant, where he joins Dive Man and Astro Man in battling Mega Man's party.

Trivia[]

  • Obviously, Yamato Man represents is Japan as his design is based on the Samurai.
    • The word Yamato (大和) means "great sum", "great harmony", or "great peace" and is the name used for ancient Japan and the peoples of Japan as a whole.
    • Yamato Man's quote from his CD data, "Nippon Banzai!", means "Long live Japan!" Nippon (日本) means Japan, and banzai (ばんざい) is an exclamation that literally means "ten thousand years" and is typically translated as "long live" in English.
  • Yamato Man's appreciation of katanas (referred to as "Japanese sword" in his CD data) is a reference to the fact that samurai usually fought with katanas instead of spears.
  • Yamato Man's head is based off the kabuto-style samurai helmets that often sport ornate crests (which were unique signatures to distinguish certain individuals/families/clans from each other).
  • Yamato Man is purple in most of his artwork, while in his Mega Man 6 mugshot, he is blue, with most of his yellow highlights white. The only highlight that remains its original color is the crest on his kabuto. In addition, the green button on his chest is yellow on his in-game sprite.
  • Yamato Man is the only boss in the game to have two weaknesses, the Silver Tomahawk and Rush Power Adaptor (he is semi-weak to the uncharged shot and the charged shot does as much damage as his weakness).
