This page is about Dark Man 1. For the others see Dark Man 2, 3 or 4. To see information on their NetNavi counterpart, see DarkMan.EXE.

Dark Man 1 (ダークマン1 Dākuman 1), also written as Dark Man I, is the first of the four Dark Man robots created by Dr. Wily to assassinate Mega Man in Mega Man 5. Dark Man 1 is a tank-like model that moves with caterpillar threads instead of legs and is armed on both arms. As the first model, Dark Man 1 can be considered the prototype from the series.[1]

Appearance[]

Dark Man 1 is a green, humanoid robot with his upper body being attached to a blue tank chassis underneath. He has a green head with a transparent part on top which shows his 'brain', solid yellow eyes, green armor, white pauldrons, and a buster cannon on each of its arms.

Dark Man 1 is the boss of Proto Stage 1.

Attack Pattern[]

Dark Man 1 has a very simple pattern. He advances forward a short distance before stopping to shoot a buster shot forward. This unprovoked buster shot travels straight forward at a medium-speed. He waits until the shot leaves the screen before continuing to advance. However, if he is hit while advancing, he retaliates by stopping to shoot. This retaliation shot is much faster in speed and actually aims at Mega Man's position. If Dark Man 1 passes by Mega Man's position while advancing, he briefly stops moving but does not shoot, and his interval to shoot is temporarily paused, resuming when Dark Man 1 turns around. Dark Man 1 moves at two different speeds throughout the fight: at the start he moves at a very slow speed, but once he loses half of his health he moves at a much faster speed, comparable to Mega Man's own walking speed. The best strategy for the player is to attack when Mega Man is far enough away from Dark Man 1; when the boss gets near, jump over him and slide away while jumping over the unprovoked shot, then repeating the steps as much times as needed to defeat him.

Weakness[]

As with all the Dark Men, Dark Man 1 is weak to Beat, who automatically homes in on him to damage him and does 3 damage. However, because of Dark Man 1's retaliations, Beat may be unwieldy and is better saved for the other Dark Men. He also has a weakness to Water Wave, which also does 3 damage, and can even negate his grounded shots if they collide. As with all bosses, Dark Man 1 takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot.

Another good strategy for Dark Man 1 is for the player to use Charge Kick, which lets the player slip underneath his projectiles and can go right through him without requiring the player to jump over him. While not a weakness, it is very difficult for Dark Man 1 to hurt the player while using the attack and Mega Man can defeat him with an entire bar of ammo.

The four Dark Man robots in Mega Man #55

All four Dark Man models are seen briefly in Mega Man #55, with Dr. Light seeing them in a vision of the near future.

Mega Man Megamix[]

The four Dark Man type robots are based on the same design that were in charge of defending Dr. Wily's fortress during his fifth attempt at world domination. Dark Man 1 is a tank variation. Due to his low center of gravity, he gains greater stability while firing his two busters. The continuous tracks that serve as his feet allow Dark Man 1 to move quickly and turn on a dime. He diverts energy from his electromagnetic shield to power himself.

Dark Man 1 first appeared robbing a bank alongside Dark Man 2 in “Warrior’s Day Off,” but they are stopped by Proto Man. In “Power Battle,” Dark Man 4 calls the other Dark Man robots to kidnap Roll, Auto, and Rush to present them as hostages to Dr. Wily, in exchange for greater rank. When they corner the three, Bass intervenes calling them cowards for ganging up on Roll, easily beating the four Dark Man robots.

The four Dark Man robots also appeared in the Mega Man Gigamix story "To a Shining Morrow", explaining to Shadow Man that they survived the attack from the alien robot by hiding inside Gamerizer, and that they helped Shade Man transport and repair the defeated Wily Numbers.
