This article is about the NetNavi ProtoMan.EXE. For his Robot Master counterpart, see Proto Man. For his anime counterpart, see ProtoMan.EXE (anime).
"...I just... follow Chaud's orders..."
―ProtoMan.EXE, Mega Man Battle Network 2

ProtoMan.EXE, known as Blues.EXE (ブルース.EXE [1][2][3] Burūsu Eguze) in Japan, is a NetNavi from the Mega Man Battle Network series operated by the ace NetBattler Eugene Chaud and a rival and friend of MegaMan. ProtoMan specializes in swords and a defensive shield that he can call upon as swiftly as his sword strikes. Since he was not originally programmed to be kind or compassionate, he can show a ruthless side at times it's needed[4].

Appearance[]

His Navi mark, a circle split with a thunderbolt pattern into two black and white sections, can be seen on ProtoMan's chest and gloves. Unlike his original counterpart, he normally uses a sword weapon instead of a buster, although he does use a shield reminiscent of the original Proto Man's, and does have a Buster weapon when he's a playable character. ProtoMan stands at 161 virtual centimeters (roughly 5'3").

Personality[]

ProtoMan's most defining character trait is that he is completely loyal to his operator and will follow any order given to him. He is also willing to sacrifice himself for Chaud. The two work together very well since they practice so many hours a day. ProtoMan is serious and doesn't talk much, but not to the point of being socially isolated like his operator.

History[]

ProtoMan, as a Navi for an Official NetBattler, is extremely well-trained by Chaud, who actually created ProtoMan himself. In Mega Man Battle Network, ProtoMan fought alone and won every fight without Chaud operating him. This streak was considered to be a force to be reckoned with to those who knew of them until he saw his downfall at the hands of MegaMan during the ElecMan scenario. Defeated, ProtoMan asked MegaMan how he fights so well and his connection to his operator Lan. When MegaMan explained to ProtoMan what that connection was, this made ProtoMan and Chaud rethink the way they operate. With ProtoMan's great fighting skills and Chaud's talent in NetBattling, this team is one of the few who can match Lan and MegaMan in strength. It is revealed in Mega Man Battle Network 3 that Chaud spends at least 10 hours a day training to uphold his skills. ProtoMan also had access to Blind Mode, which he could use to dispel illusions, which he used against DesertMan.

In Mega Man Network Transmission, ProtoMan operates in the same role as in the previous game, Mega Man Battle Network. He and Chaud tell MegaMan and Lan to back off and let the police deal with these matters. MegaMan later finds ProtoMan in Old Area, near deletion at the hands of SwordMan. ProtoMan then sees MegaMan again after MegaMan defeats Zero, at which time ProtoMan is called upon to finish Zero. What happens to Zero after that depends on several factors. ProtoMan can be battled at the entrance to the Undernet upon the player receiving the AuthCode. ProtoMan assists MegaMan through Lan's and MegaMan's adventure at various times.

Throughout the series, Chaud has operated him to defeat Net criminals as an Official NetBattler. ProtoMan has gained a fearsome reputation and deletes NetNavis in the nick of time when MegaMan can't.

In Mega Man Battle Network 6, he has an extra version which can be unlocked after completing all requests, ProtoMan FZ (Final Zero Custom (ファイナルゼロカスタム Fainaru Zero Kasutamu)).[5] It is super powered, making him the only non-villainous NetNavi in Battle Network 6 to have more than three forms (The WWW Navis all have a secret "RV" form).

Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation[]

BluesPETMenuEXE45

Blues in the PET.

Blues is one of the unlockable Navis. His theme is a remix from his Robot Master counterpart from Rockman 3: Dr. Wily no Saigo!?

Continuing his EXE series characteristics, he is completely loyal to his operator and will follow any order given to him.

As an Official Navi, only he will allow the player to receive mails from the Official Command once per day as long as he remains in the player's PET.

Blues is equipped with a special program that allows the use of the Long Sword without the need of its respective Battle Chip. It won't help to fill the Custom Gauge faster, but it is the only special Program that can strike a Counter, which will help filling the Custom Gauge. Its other Special Program is the characteristic Blues Shield, which is aesthetically different from the shields of other playable Navis. He can increase his max HP if the player completes the missions sent by the Official Command and if he beats the daily minigames that can be found in Mystery Data.

He can also open the highly-complex Security Gates on the Internet.

Rockman EXE Battle Chip Stadium[]

"He is the Navi of the Official NetBattler, Enzan, and Rockman's rival. In order to protect his master's life, he uses his sword to eliminate any Navi who commits a crime."

ProtoMan in the anime.

Main article: ProtoMan.EXE (anime)

ProtoMan is the NetNavi of Chaud Blaze in the MegaMan NT Warrior anime series. The anime has given up ProtoMan's shield entirely, making him more reliant on Sword-based Battle Chips.

ProtoMan and Chaud start as the skilled and confident, if not arrogant rivals of Lan Hikari and MegaMan in the first half of the first season. After MegaMan sacrificed himself to save ProtoMan from PharaohMan after the N1 Grand Prix, ProtoMan and his NetOp come to respect Lan and befriend him and MegaMan after his revival.

In Axess, ProtoMan gains the ability to perform Cross Fusion with Chaud, becoming C.F. ProtoMan, however Chaud uses a Dark Chip to gain the upper hand against ShadeMan, turning ProtoMan into Dark ProtoMan for much of the second half of the season. It's also revealed near the end that ProtoMan was Chaud's best friend as a child when he received him as a gift.

MegaMan NT Warrior[]

ProtoMan Muramasa Style

ProtoMan Muramasa Style

While as cool and aloof as he is in the games, ProtoMan is more open about his feelings and quicker to anger whenever MegaMan acts stupid, resulting with him punching him comical fashion. This ProtoMan is also more determined to be the greatest fighter. As Lan and MegaMan get stronger, Chaud and ProtoMan continue to seek more power in order fight off new threats.

Along the way, Serenade grants them the sword of destiny - Muramasa, letting him turn into ProtoMan Muramasa Style. While relegated to MegaMan's support in later volumes (e.g. giving up his consciousness so MegaMan can go into Proto Soul), it's shown in the epilogue that he's been training hard behind the scenes. Eventually reaching immeasurable power like MegaMan has.

Abilities[]

ProtoMan is one of the strongest NetNavis in the Mega Man Battle Network games. He has excellent potential with his sword and shield. When fought by the player, his attacks and behavior differ from game to game. In the anime, he is one of the few NetNavis that possesses an Ultimate Program.

Blues

ProtoMan's Navi mark

  • Proto Shield, known in Japan as
Blues Shield (ブルースシールド [6] Burūsu Shīrudo):
ProtoMan's basic defense. At higher power levels, as ProtoMan pauses between his own attacks, most incoming strikes are blocked by his shield. He's less scrutinizing in later games, taking hits more often. In Network Transmission it acts like the Guard Battle Chip, countering attacks with a shockwave.
    • The visual for ProtoMan's shield becomes the base for the Reflect NaviCust Program. The design of shield also changes into a more detailed look starting in Battle Network 5.
  • Reflect (リフレクト Rifurekuto):
When ProtoMan is playable, his shield will become Reflect instead. When he successfully blocks an attack, a 50 damage blast will bounce back down the row.
  • Proto Sword, [7] known in Japan as
    Blues Sword (ブルースソード Burūsu Sōdo):
ProtoMan's signature energy sword which he uses for his many attack techniques. He is capable of using his sword without the use of any sword chips.
  • Surprise Sword (サプライズソード Sapuraizu Sōdo):
If ProtoMan blocks an attack with his shield, he will teleport next to the player and slashes. In Battle Network 6, he will immediately speed towards the opponent and slash them.
  • Sonic Boom (ソニックブーム Sonikku Būmu):
ProtoMan swipes his sword, cutting the air and generating a wave that travels towards MegaMan, covering two rows in width. One of ProtoMan's rudimentary fighting attacks. He randomly shifts between the top and bottom rows, swinging a three panel wide sword attack that flies to the other end of the stage. He will sometimes strike consecutively, cycling between the top and bottom column, making the attack hard to dodge. He stops using this attack in later games. In Battle Network 2, when ProtoMan V3 has less than half of its HP MAX he can use this attack, while in his previously forms he can use it normally in the whole battle.
  • Wide Sword (ワイドソード Waido Sōdo):
Another of ProtoMan's basic skills. In earlier games, he only used this when shot at, bringing up his shield. He'd then teleport in front, and use a Wide Sword attack. He later begins using this over the Sonic Boom completely.
  • Fighter Sword (ファイターソード Faitā Sōdo):
ProtoMan stands in the front row of his panels, and swings a Fighter Sword, hitting three panels ahead to the back row. In Battle Network Rockman EXE Official Guidebook, this was called Long Sword (ロングソード Rongu Sōdo).
  • Super Wide Sword (スーパーワイドソード [8] Sūpā Waido Sōdo):
ProtoMan Battle Chip's attack from the first Mega Man Battle Network. ProtoMan homes in on the closest enemy, ignoring panel restrictions, and slashes them with a Wide Sword. This is referenced in Battle Story MegaMan NT Warrior, when ProtoMan uses an Elec Sword, he creates a move called Super Elec Sword.
  • Area Grab, known in Japan as
    Area Steal (エリアスチール Eria Suchīru):
He will steal left edge of MegaMan's panels. In Battle Network 2 only used in his V3 form if the player use Area Grab previously (until 3 of this chip). In Battle Network 5, he has unlimited amount of this chip while being immune to Jealousy Battle Chip. It is only triggered if the player steals at least one panel from his side and will be done periodically until both sides had equal number of panels.
  • Delta Ray, [9] known in Japan as
Delta Ray Edge (デルタレイエッジ Deruta Rei Ejji):
One of ProtoMan's strongest techniques. This attack is heralded by a sudden flash, and then ProtoMan loops the area his opponent was last on, striking three times with a Wide Sword-ranged attack that cripples and paralyzes the opponent. Once all three strikes are executed, ProtoMan reappears in front of the enemy, his opponent ringed in the shining image of a triangle (technically, the three strikes do not all have to connect to leave the triangle-afterimage). The Delta Ray Giga Chip is available in Battle Network 3 to 6. This attack, both by ProtoMan and the Chip can only be used properly when the opponent is in the middle row, in the front or center panel, as the attack requires an open panel behind the target.
    • This attack is greatly different in the anime, with ProtoMan drawing a triangle with his sword and launching it towards his opponent.
  • Behind Slash (ビハインドスラッシュ Bihaindo Surasshu):
In Battle Network 4 and 4.5, ProtoMan will leave himself open, and if he gets hit he becomes a gray image that disintegrates. It's a fake out that then has ProtoMan go behind the player and slash with a Wide Sword.
  • Bloody Cross (ブラッディクロス Buraddi Kurosu):
In Battle Network 4, ProtoMan disappears from the field, then drops from the sky and slashes the player's field with an X shape slash. This is called Blade Cross in the English BradyGames Strategy Guide.
  • Cross Sword (クロスソード Kurosu Sōdo):
In Battle Network 6, he is capable of attacking in a + formation.
  • Trance Move (トランスムーヴ Toransu Mūvu):
Replacing his Delta Ray in Battle Network 6, ProtoMan will zip around with the player's position as the center, first diagonally from the top left panel then the bottom left panel, then back and forth the middle row, hitting him several times, dealing massive damage. This attack cannot be executed if the player steps on the bottom or the top row when ProtoMan is about to strike (after the ding sound).
  • Step Sword, known in Japan as
    Fumikomi Zan (フミコミザン Fumikomi Zan):
In Network Transmission, ProtoMan disappears and reappears next to MegaMan, slashing him.
  • Frontal Breakthrough (正面突破 Shōmen Toppa):
A dash slash used in Mega Man Network Transmission.
  • Life Sword, known in Japan as
    Dream Sword (ドリームソード Dorīmu Sōdo):
Used in Network Transmission. A large slash that releases a shockwave in the end.
  • "Blade Cyclone":
An anime only attack that has no official name. This technique involves ProtoMan having two sword-type Battle Chips, and then spinning incredibly fast that it produces a crimson red cyclone, that when it engulfs an opponent, they are slashed countless times faster than they can react. Chaud stated when he first used it that this attack pattern was unrivaled. This same technique has also been used to create diversions, and drilling through the ground.
  • Bloody Quartet:
Manga only (Volume 4). ProtoMan has two sword weapons and slashes the foe at an X formation.
  • Neo Delta Ray Edge:
Manga only (Volume 13). ProtoMan replicates himself into 3 copies and they all perform a more powerful version of Delta Ray.
  • Dimensional Sword Flight:
Manga only (Volume 13). ProtoMan slashes ahead, then a dimensional hole appears behind the foe. The hole send out phantom slashes and strikes the foe multiple times.

Dark ProtoMan[]

Main article: Dark ProtoMan.EXE

ProtoMan gains some new moves as Dark ProtoMan (not ProtoMan DS).

  • "Shield":
A dark silhouette of ProtoMan replaces his shield to block attacks. Note that with any attack involving a clone, the clone will block all attacks like a regular obstacle.
  • Shadow Slash (シャドースラッシュ Shadō Surasshu):
A dark silhouette appears and uses Wide Sword, Fighte Sword, or Moon Blade (if operated Navi attacks again using anything other than Break element when the clone is defending, that clone will instantly teleport in front of the operated Navi and uses this move). This silhouette can attack up to three times should the operated Navi avoid the first and second slash. ProtoMan will still move while the clone attacks. During the battle, this silhouette will launch an attack first before ProtoMan, intending to catch the player off guard who attempted to get Counter hit from predicting his usual attack pattern on the first cycle of movement.
  • Dark Edge (ダークエッジ Dāku Ejji):
ProtoMan disappears. A dark silhouette will attempt to slash behind the player with Dark Sword, then ProtoMan will reappear and use the same attack in front of the player. If any of the attack connects, it will paralyzed the operated Navi and destroyed all Battle Chips held.

Battle Chips[]

ProtoMan has a number of chips he appears in:

  • ProtoMan, known as Blues (ブルース Burūsu) in Japan, is a Navi Chip present in most games from the series. It summons ProtoMan, who will move to the closest enemy and attack with his sword.
  • Hawk Cut, known as Hayabusa Giri (ハヤブサギリ Hayabusa Giri) in Japan, is a Battle Chip from Mega Man Battle Network 4 that cuts 3 vertical squares then 2 horizontal squares. The Katana Battle Chip from the fifth game is similar to Hawk Cut.
  • Delta Ray, known as Delta Ray Edge (デルタレイエッジ Deruta Rei Ejji) in Japan, is a Giga Chip that summons ProtoMan to perform his Delta Ray attack, a triangle shaped sword formation.
  • Leaders Raid (リーダーズレイド Rīdāzu Reido) is a Mega Chip from Mega Man Battle Network 5 that summons both ProtoMan and Colonel. ProtoMan moves to the closest enemy to attack with a wide slash and is followed by Colonel attacking with Cross Divide.

Trivia[]

  • While normally impossible to play as him in Mega Man Battle Network 6, using the Beast Link Gate allows the player to play as ProtoMan as a Link Navi. However, he won't have an overworld and the net navigation will continue to be MegaMan. He will only join in during battles [10].
  • The Battle Card "Sword Fighter" in the Mega Man Star Force series shows a silhouette of ProtoMan dashing alongside Star Force Mega Man.
  • ProtoMan's Navi mark, is supposed to resemble a "B", for his Japanese name, Blues. It can also be seen as a lightning bolt, as a reference to his lightning quick movements in battle.[11]
  • Early concepts of ProtoMan depict him with a scarf like his classic counterpart, but there was a rule in which it was forbidden to give Navi characters any form of cloth to "ensure [they] gave off a cyber vibe." Hence, ProtoMan was given long hair to make up for the missing scarf (this rule, however, would later be broken by a few Navis, the first being Bass.EXE)[12]
  • While most of his appearance and personality are based on the classic Proto Man, some aspects of him were distinctly inspired by Zero from the Mega Man X series, his sword and long hair being the most obvious examples.
  • Although ProtoMan.EXE's English name is derived from his classic series counterpart, it should be noted that it makes no sense from an in-universe perspective, as he is not a prototype of anything.
MegaMan NT Warrior Rhythm

Rhythm in the manga.

  • An extra comic in the MegaMan NT Warrior manga featured a potential character who would serve as a love interest to ProtoMan. Playing off ProtoMan's Japanese name, Blues, the new female character was named Rhythm.
  • In Battle Network 6's game data, ProtoMan's BX version exists but it is unused in the final game.
