Panel (パネル Paneru), or Square (マス Masu), is a feature from the battle screen in the Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force series, battles taking place in a field made with panels. The type of panels can be changed for varying effects.

About[]

BN3PanelsNetbattleACDC1

A battlefield in Mega Man Battle Network 3.

In the Mega Man Battle Network series, panel types are crucial to Net Battles. The typical NetBattle field is made with 3x6 panels with no type, but it is not uncommon for the panel type to change during the course of the battle. In certain battles, some panel types start out changed from a Normal panel. There are Battle Chips that can change panel types, such as Ice Seed or Lava Seed. Some attacks have Breaking qualities that allow them to crack the panels, making them holes when someone steps off them. Breaking a panel will negate any previous panel changes and turn it into a Cracked Panel.

The Geddon series has a variety of effects on Panel Type, ranging from cracking all panels to turning the entire battlefield to poison. In Mega Man Battle Network 6, panels can be changed to force anyone who steps on them to move in a certain direction. Attacks like Holy Dream inflict damage based on the presence of specific panels. There are also Battle Chips that require certain conditions like Holes to be present in order for them to work, such as Snake and Geyser.

'In first Mega Man Battle Network and Rockman.EXE Operate Shooting Star, the only kinds of panels were Normal and Cracked, and each had multiple appearances depending on location.

In the anime[]

AreaStealAnime

MegaMan using Area Steal to teleport in the first season intro of the anime.

In the anime series, panel effect chips are rarely seen, as there is no "grid" when characters fight. Area Steal works differently than in the games, rather than stealing part of the opponent's area, it instead allows a Navi to teleport a short distance, and is often used by character to appear behind an enemy or to get away from them.

Seed chips are also seen, but have added effects that would make them useful in the anime, such as a Grass Seed not only turning the ground into grass, but growing vines that entangle the intended target.

List of Panel types[]

The panel also cannot be stolen by chips such as Area Grab. Only Navis, EM bodies and viruses with Air Shoes can stand on it.

In the Mega Man Star Force series, although also the panels may be removed at the start of battle, they completely disappear instead of leaving a panel border like in the Mega Man Battle Network series. Technically, this Panel type does not exist in the Mega Man Star Force series.

In Mega Man Battle Network 3 Dark Holes on the field last for a very short time and enable use of Dark Giga Chips while they are open. Its chip is found in a Blue Mystery Data in Secret Area 3. The occupied panel cannot be walked on.

In Mega Man Battle Network 4, Dark Holes increase the power of Dark Chips, and cause LaserMan.EXE to heal over time just by existing. It is created with the Evil Chips Hole or Dark Line, which can only be used by evil Navis and increase the power of DS Navi Chips. The occupied panel can be walked on and if MegaMan has maximum "karma", Dark Holes disappear if he comes into contact with them.

In Mega Man Battle Network 5, Liberation Missions contain Dark Holes (ヤミのあな Yami no Ana) panels that summons guardians to protect the Darkloids. The player's team can only face the area's Darkloid after destroying all Dark Holes.

Water[]

Water[11] (みず[1] Mizu) panels, also known as Sea[4], are panels that has been flooded by water.

Base Effects

  • Whenever a non-Aqua element Navi or virus steps on a Water panel, they are rendered unable to move for a very short time. Aqua element Navis or viruses are unaffected by this effect.
  • Elec attacks deal double damage to Navis and viruses on Water panels.
  • Fire element Navis and viruses will have their HP drained while standing on the panel.
  • Any playable Navi standing on the panel will get +30 to their next Aqua chip, which consumes the Water panel on use.
  • After a short time (roughly 15 seconds), Water panels turn into Normal panels.

Chip Effects

  • Tornado attacks that hit Water panels deal double damage and turn the panel into a Normal panel.
  • RainyDay hits an additional time for each Water panel on the user's side of the field, turning them into Normal panels.
  • WavePit creates a damaging Aqua element wave from the furthest back Water panel on each row that travels forward. Those panels become Normal.
  • ElemRage becomes Aqua element and increases its range when used atop a Water panel, changing it into a Normal panel on use. In addition, the three panels along the same row of the user that ElemRage hits by default are dealt two hits instead of one.

Specific User Effects

  • ToadMan.EXE, Toad Soul and the Marina virus family hide inside Water panels, granting them an effect similar to PopUp. When not attacking, they cannot be damaged by attacks that are non-Elec element or do not target the panel itself.

Created By

  • SeaSeed lobs a bomb three panels ahead that creates a 3-by-3 area of Water panels centered on the seed's landing location. If an object, Navi or virus was on that panel, only the single panel directly under that target becomes a Water panel.
  • The AqWhirl series of chips creates Water panels directly under any target that it hits, including objects, Navis and viruses.

Battle Chips[]

X8NavigatorAlertIconEdit This section requires expansion.

There are several Battle Chips that affect panels.

There are also Battle Chips that require specific panels to be used. For example, God Stone, Lava Dragon, Old Wood, Snake, Stand Out, Summon Black, and Water Line require a hole to be used.

BN4Chip106 Crack Out (クラックアウト Kurakku Auto), also known as Panel Out 1 (パネルアウト1 Paneru Auto 1) and X-Panel 1, destroys the panel in front of the user.
BN4Chip107 Double Crack (ダブルクラック Daburu Kurakku) destroys two panels in front of the user.
BN4Chip108 Triple Crack (トリプルクラック Toripuru Kurakku), also known as Panel Out 3 (パネルアウト3 Paneru Auto 3) and X-Panel 3, destroys three panels.
BN4Chip118 Panel Grab, known as Panel Steal (パネルスチール Paneru Suchīru) in Japan, steals one panel from the enemy area.
BN4Chip119 Area Grab, known as Area Steal (エリアスチール Eria Suchīru) in Japan and Steal in the first English game, steals the left edge from the enemy area.
BN4Chip121 Grab Banish, known as Steal Punish (スチールパニシュ Suchīru Panishu) in Japan, retaliates stolen panels.
BN4Chip122 Grab Revenge, known as Steal Revenge (スチールリベンジ Suchīru Ribenji) in Japan, retaliates stolen panels.
BN4Chip123 Panel Return (パネルリターン Paneruritān), also known as Repair, fixes the panels from the user's area.

BN4SChip029 Panel Shoot 2 (パネルシュート2 Paneru Shūto 2) lifts all panels in the row of the user's area (except the one with the user) and throws them. Causes more damage if the user's area is increased.
BN4SChip030 Panel Shoot 3 (パネルシュート3 Paneru Shūto 3) lifts four panels around the user and throws them. This chip is risky because it leaves the user trapped for some time, unless the holes can be passed or restored.
BN6Chip088 Crack Shot, known as Crack Shoot (クラックシュート Kurakku Shūto) in Japan, throws the panel in front of the user ahead.
BN6Chip089 Double Shot, known as Double Shoot (ダブルシュート Daburu Shūto) in Japan, throws two panels in front of the user ahead.
