The Cossack Catcher (コサックキャッチャー Kosakku Kyatchā) is the machine that Dr. Cossack uses against Mega Man in Cossack Stage 4 in Mega Man 4, being the final boss of this fortress. Dr. Cossack based its design on games that he was good at when younger.[1] Its magic hand (claw-shaped manipulator) is capable of causing heavy damage to what it catches.

Mega Man 4[]

Attack Pattern[]

The arena is split into 2 elevations: the left side is lower while the right side is higher. The Cossack Catcher, piloted by Dr. Cossack, remains stationary for several seconds so the player can get their bearings. The Cossack Catcher's main movement is simple, hovering left and right along the upper areas of the screen, always adjusting itself to be higher or lower slightly before movement. During the movement, the side cannons on the Cossack Catcher will fire after 2-3 seconds of waiting, and they shoot 3 shots that spread out (covering a 0 degree, -45 degree, and a -90 degree). The more dangerous aspect of the Cossack Catcher comes from when it passes over Mega Man: which prompts the Cossack Catcher to slam down at a lightning speed in an attempt to catch Mega Man with the bottom claws. Getting caught by the Cossack Catcher not only does damage to the player once they get dropped to the floor, but it also disables the pause button during the animation (so the player cannot switch weapons or use an E-Tank). To avoid getting caught, Mega Man must slide. Sliding actually resets the Cossack Catcher's movement and keeps him stationary for an extra second before he continues his movement (it also pauses the downtime inbetween the side cannon shots).

Weaknesses[]

The Cossack Catcher's weakness is the Dust Crusher, doing 2 damage, although the fully-charged shot from the Mega Buster deals more damage (3 damage). Mega Man can also use the Wire adapter to inflict chip damage against the machine. To avoid the risk of getting caught by the claw while standing directly under the machine, Mega Man should stand against the step in the boss room and begin firing the Wire Adapter just before the claw is directly over him. There is also the chance that if the machine is low enough, Mega Man can hit it twice with one shot of the Wire — once on the way up, and again on the way back down.

Aftermath[]

When the Cossack Catcher has only two units of health or less left, the fight is interrupted by Proto Man who only appears to drop off Kalinka, Dr. Cossack's daughter, before leaving. Kalinka tells Mega Man to stop fighting, explaining that Dr. Cossack is not really evil as Dr. Wily took her hostage and blackmailed her father to challenge Mega Man and conquer the world if she was to remain safe. Dr. Cossack leaves the machine to reunite with his daughter, but the Cossack Catcher explodes when Dr. Wily appears (by teleporting in for some reason). Frustrated at Proto Man's betrayal and Cossack's name cleared, he promises that he will "break" Mega Man and retreats to his own fortress.

*For the Mega Buster and Pharaoh Shot, the first digit is when the weapon is fired normally and the second is when it is fully charged.

Other media[]

Rockman 4[]

Like the game, Dr. Cossack uses the Cossack Catcher against Mega Man. Mega Man attacks it with many weapons, but none of them causes damage. The Cossack Catcher speeds up and hits Mega Man, and Cossack catches Mega Man. The machine's claw releases electricity, stunning Mega Man, and releases him to let the fall cause damage. After lifting and dropping him again, Mega Man avoids being caught a third time by sliding and attacks with a charge shot, causing some damage to it. The fight is interrupted when Proto Man appears with Kalinka Cossack, who explains that she was captured by Wily and forced her father to work for him.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

The Cossack Catcher appeared in issue 20 during Mega Man's constant time travel. Besides its claw, it can also attack by shooting from two cannons. Mega Man takes it down by destroying the cable in the top. It would later make another appearance in Issue 55 during Dr. Light's visions of the future.
