"Didn't you notice...? The humans have found happiness more than ever before... The utopia that humans have searched for, is here in Neo Arcadia. This is something that you and the original X could never create... Only I could do this!"
―Copy X, Area X, Mega Man Zero

Copy X (コピーエックス Kopī Ekkusu), referred to as Master X by the Four Guardians, is the main antagonist of Mega Man Zero. A Reploid created by Ciel based on the original X's DNA, Copy X governed Neo Arcadia after the original X sacrificed his body to seal the Dark Elf.[2]

After being destroyed by Zero, Copy X is revived by Dr. Weil as Copy X MK. II, serving as a tertiary antagonist in Mega Man Zero 3.[3]

Appearance[]

Copy X is a supposedly perfect copy of X, with similar blue armor and a red gem in his helmet - however, there are some visual differences. The most noticeable are his red eyes, indicating his antagonistic role. When revived as Copy X MK. II, his eyes were blue. His helmet shape is also slightly different from Cyber-elf X's.

In battle, Copy X dons his Ultimate Armor. This turns all of his armor white and gold, save for his blue helmet, and adds angelic wings to his legs, back, helmet, and X-Buster. The armor's imagery likens him to the Seraphim of Judaism, who were said to be the highest-ranking angels, and this was signified by their six wings. This emphasizes his self-praising savior complex, as opposed to the modest Cyber-elf X's cassock and halo. When changing elemental alignments, his armor changes colors (red for fire, green for lightning, azure for ice) similar to the original X's Variable Weapons System.

In his final form, Copy X becomes a giant robot with even more Seraphim motifs. While his upper body mostly stays the same, his lower body combines into a pointed tip. His arms detach from his body, becoming large and clawed. He gains an extravagant halo and six large wings appear on his back. This divine appearance is sharply contrasted by the demonic red glare in his eyes.

Personality[]

Copy X is a shallow imitation of the original X, sharing X's sense of responsibility to the humans but without any of the mercy, hesitation, or altruism that made him so special.

Copy X is much more arrogant and stubborn, as he was born directly into a position of total leadership. He is prone to violence when enraged, and chooses to dismiss his anxieties and confusion by lashing out, rather than confronting and learning from his uncertainty. Zero calls him naïve, since he lacks the experience to properly understand justice and rule Neo Arcadia as X did.[4] This is further expanded in the Drama Tracks; Zero states that X's constant overcoming of doubts is what made him become a great hero, while Copy X is a simple imitation of that outcome without any of the work. Copy X also never underwent the 30 years of protocols the original X experienced in Dr. Light's capsule.

Copy X has a complicated relationship with his origins. He claims to be a perfect copy of X, and thus all his actions are automatically justified. He harbors a savior complex and delusions of grandeur; in his final form, he claims he is judgment itself and demands that Zero repent. Paradoxically, Copy X also harbors an inferiority complex towards his template, and claims to have surpassed him by making Neo Arcadia into a true human utopia where he never could, though Zero refutes this.[5] Comparing him unfavorably to the original X also bothers him greatly,[6] and he believes that everyone treats him like a fool because of his derivative nature.[7] When he finally meets the original X, he is shocked and attempts to show him up by transforming.[7] His bio in X-DiVE gives further credence to his having an inferiority complex to his template by citing that his personal motivations for doing such was to prove he's as good as X.

Copy X's incompleteness is emphasized in the Ciel's Memory radio dramas, where he speaks with a computer voice rather than X's real voice. He ends up with slowed speech while uttering his final words to Zero, as if his computer's audio is shutting down.

When revived by Dr. Weil as Copy X MK. II, he is totally loyal to Weil as if brainwashed. He overlooks Weil's crimes in the Elf Wars partly due to the punishment he got being done outside standard procedure and quickly demotes his loyal Four Guardians to install him in their place. In the English version he speaks with an exaggerated computer-like stutter, while in Japanese he emphasizes syllables incorrectly, showing that he is a mere copy of a copy at this point. As a puppet to Weil, Copy X no longer cared to protect humans, or at least believed in sacrificing the lives of few for the benefit of many, as he ordered a missile strike on a human residential space just to capture the Dark Elf.

History[]

Background[]

After the Elf Wars, the ruler of Neo Arcadia, X, used his body to seal the Dark Elf in Yggdrasil. However, his Cyber-elf form was nowhere to be found. Because of this, the Central Council was thrown into disarray. As an emergency remedy, the brilliant scientist Ciel designed and built Copy X, a supposedly perfect copy of the original, to secretly take his place. It is unknown how many people knew of the replacement besides Ciel, but it was kept under wraps to even his closest subordinates, including the Four Guardians.

However, Copy X did not share any of the life experience of his template, nor the 30 years of testing from Dr. Light. He regularly held trials with the Eight Gentle Judges, who noticed a drastic change in X's personality, especially in his ruthlessness when judging Mavericks.[8] It is possible that Elpizo was tried by Copy X before escaping Neo Arcadia.

When Neo Arcadia faced an energy crisis as Reploids increased in number, Copy X concluded that Reploids were the heart of the problem. This began Neo Arcadia's iron-fisted policy of justice, in which Reploids were randomly branded as Mavericks and mercilessly executed without cause or provocation. This disposal of innocent Reploids led to rebels fleeing, and resulted in the creation of a Resistance. Copy X's armies, led by the Four Guardians, would wipe out mass amounts of the rebels.

Mega Man Zero[]

After the Resistance awakened the legendary hero, Zero, Copy X watched him decimate Neo Arcadia's forces and Mutos Reploids, becoming a growing thorn in Copy X's side. He allowed the Four Guardians to lead the fight against Zero.

Once Zero infiltrated Area X, Copy X sent the Four Guardians away and chose to face him alone. When accused of being a "pirate copy", he ranted about being a perfect duplicate who had surpassed both the original X and Zero, before engaging Zero in battle with his Ultimate Armor. Copy X was defeated, and Zero claimed that X was stronger than him. Infuriated, Copy X transformed into a seraph-like form for another battle, but was defeated again. Heavily damaged, Copy X spitefully chose to self-destruct the base to kill Zero with him, though Zero escaped thanks to the real Cyber-elf X.

In the aftermath in Mega Man Zero 2, Sage Harpuia took charge of Neo Arcadia while keeping the ruler's demise a secret to the public. Elpizo believed it was urgent that they take advantage of this moment of weakness and destroy Neo Arcadia with Copy X gone, afraid that he would soon be rebuilt. Ironically, Elpizo's obsession led to him freeing the Dark Elf, which started a chain of events leading to Copy X's resurrection after all.

Mega Man Zero 3[]

MMZ3 Scene 07

Copy X MK. II demoting Harpuia.

Initiating his plan with the Dark Elf, Dr. Weil used DNA resurrection to revive Copy X as Copy X MK. II, a replica of a replica who spoke with a stutter. Copy X first appeared in Omega's spacecraft, retaking control of Neo Arcadia from Harpuia and installing Dr. Weil as his chief adviser. Even this early, it was clear that Copy X was a mere puppet to Weil's agenda (though it is unclear if he was brainwashed or simply manipulated). Shortly after, Copy X contacted the Resistance to cancel Neo Arcadia's talks for the Ciel System and challenge them to a race for the Dark Elf.

Harpuia confronted Copy X about affording Dr. Weil such a leadership position despite his banishment after the Elf Wars. Copy X retorted that Weil may have been banished unjustly and he deserved a second chance. He then chose to demote the Four Guardians and make Dr. Weil the head of Neo Arcadia's armies in their place.

When the Dark Elf was finally located at Area Z-3079, Copy X ordered a missile strike to clear the area and transport Omega there, despite it being a residential district. Zero attempted to stop the missile, but failed due to Crea and Prea's interruption, and Omega successfully absorbed the Dark Elf.

Now with the upper hand, Copy X contacted the Resistance to request the Ciel System in exchange for amnesty. When Ciel refused, Copy X declared them extremists again and launched an all-out assault on the New Resistance Base led by three of his previous commanders resurrected by Dr. Weil: Anubis Necromancess V, Hanumachine R, and Blizzack Staggroff R.

MMZ3 Scene 08

Copy X MK. II contacting the Resistance.

Zero destroyed all three commanders before bringing the fight to Neo Arcadia, infiltrating the reconstructed Area X-2. Copy X faced him in his throne room, offering peace once more before launching an attack. Copy X lost the rematch, and called out for Dr. Weil to use Omega to crush Zero. However, the real X arrived to inform them that Weil and Omega had fled. Frustrated by the retreat of Weil and the arrival of the real X, Copy X initiated his transformation - however, he was suddenly immobilized and began exploding, revealing that Weil had installed a bomb inside him that would activate upon transformation. With the destruction of Copy X on April 23,[9] Dr. Weil invoked Ordinance #8 to assume rule of Neo Arcadia, blaming the death of Copy X on Zero and the Resistance, all while promising to crush them and restore peace to Neo Arcadia. The effects of this ruse are felt all the way through Mega Man Zero 4, as the humans of the Caravan are slow to trust Zero for his alleged role in letting Dr. Weil come into power.

Powers and abilities[]

Copy X, as a copy of the original X, apparently possesses all of his abilities. However, it is implied that his abilities are far weaker than X's, mostly due to a lack of battle experience as indicated by Zero. In the Ciel's Memory radio drama, Copy X shoots Zero with his X-Buster; outside of being stunned by the hit, Zero completely shrugged it off and claimed the shot was weak.

Ultimate Armor[]

MMZCopyX

First form

To fight Zero, Copy X equips an angelic armor that gives him access to Charge Shots, three different elemental alignments, a slide kick, and the dangerous Nova Strike. In Mega Man Zero 3, Copy X MK. II also possesses a new laser attack that ricochets off surfaces.

Copy X's transformation into this state varied in appearance. In Mega Man Zero, he was enveloped in golden light before emerging in this form. Copy X MK. II's transformation first enveloped him in a purple and blue orb, before emerging in golden light in his armored form.

Copy X doesn't have any elemental weakness, this is still the case when he changes his elemental alignment.

Attack Description Notes
Mode Change Copy X flashes, changing his elemental alignment. This changes his strengths and weaknesses.
Normal Shot Copy X either jumps and shoots 3 shots downwards, or just shoots them while standing on the ground.
  • Charged: Copy X fires a large plasma shot that causes more damage.
Ice Shot Copy X fires a chunk of ice that shatters on contact and splits into five pieces of shrapnel, similar to the Shotgun Ice.
  • Charged: Copy X releases a swirling stream of icy energy forward.
Elec Shot Copy X releases an electric orb similar to the Electric Spark which has a slight homing effect.
  • Charged: Copy X shoots three waves of electricity into the floor.
Fire Shot Copy X launches a stream of flame similar to the Fire Wave, which arcs slightly as it flies across the room.
  • Charged: Copy X shoots a giant flame shot upwards that spreads fire down in a volcanic manner.
Sliding Copy X attacks with a sliding kick along the floor.
Nova Strike Copy X dashes forwards along the floor or through the air, enveloped in golden energy. It is not as strong as in the X series, but has a homing effect.
Raging EX Charge Shouting "Mō yurusan!" (I'll get you for that!) Copy X is enveloped in a flashing aura that recovers one full health gauge (possibly representing the use of a Sub Tank) and grants him temporary immunity. Only if the player is A or S rank. The player can stop this from happening if Zero can score a hit just before the aura takes effect, and Copy X is not flashing from taking damage.
EX Skill: Reflected Laser Copy X will shoot a laser that reflects diagonally off of surfaces, similar to the Gemini Laser from Mega Man 3. Only used by Copy X MK. II in Mega Man Zero 3, if the player is A or S rank.

Second form[]

CopyX2

Second form

A seraph-like transformation of Copy X. This form levitates in the center of the screen, destroying the sides of the floor with two spiked pillars, which Zero can use to wall-jump on to reach Copy X. Touching the spikes on the pillars does not instantly kill Zero, only harm him. Copy X could also remotely set Area X to self-destruct from this form. Only the original Copy X was capable of reaching this stage, as Copy X MK. II was set with a bomb that exploded when this form was activated. Copy X's second form is weak against Ice.

Attack Description Notes
Tentei Laser Copy X shouts "Light!" (光よ! Hikari yo!) and fires multiple small beams in random directions. These can be avoided by going from one end of the platform to the other while dashing, which will make the beams miss completely. It has an odd lock-on, in which the lasers will shoot at Zero's current location on the platforms.
Bind Ring Copy X shouts "Repent!" (悔い改めよ! Kuiaratame yo!) and fires off several ring-shaped halos down that trap the enemy inside, but it doesn't cause damage though.
  • Like the Tentei Laser, the rings have an odd lock-on to Zero's current location on the platforms. Can be avoided by simple movement.
  • Copy X won't stop shooting bind rings even after the player gets trapped by one of them. The binds don't stack on each other, but can land on Zero again immediately after he is freed by one of them.
Mekido Flame Races a tracking beam all over the surface and torches the floor from it for a while. Copy X shouts, "I'm Judgement!" (裁きだ Sabaki da!)
EX Skill: Giga Punisher Constantly slams both spiked platforms down simultaneously in a pattern while using Bind Ring at the same time. He emits an eerie cackle, indicating that Copy X will use the EX Skill.

Other game appearances[]

Mega Man X DiVE[]

Copy X appeared in Mega Man X DiVE as the boss of the July 2020 event "The Savior has Come". The battle against him is similar to his appearances in the Mega Man Zero series.

Copy X later became a playable Hunter Program in November 2020, wearing his Ultimate Armor as usual. His Active Skills are Charge Shot and Nova Strike.

Rockman Zero (manga)[]

Copy X appears shortly with his Ultimate Armor in the manga, where he is an unnamed fusion of the Four Guardians created by Cial, who refers to him as the "Perfect Reploid". He overwhelms the battle-weary Zero using his Nova Strike and deals a serious blow, reverting the Reploid into his meek self. Believing he had already won, he prepares to kill Zero, but Lito tries to protect him. Irritated, he throws Lito away and attempts to eliminate him, but Zero gathers up the courage and strength to fight back without his helmet, impaling the Perfect Reploid from behind using his Z-Saber. Without the Four Guardians, the Resistance was able to defeat the Neo Arcadian armies. Copy X was noticeably much more psychotic than his original depiction, as seen through his facial tick, and was much less vocal as well.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

In Issue 55 of the comic series, Copy X appears with the Guardians against Zero as part of an extensive vision of the near and distant future of Earth witnessed by Dr. Light.

Trivia[]

MMZ3 Secret Disk 121 data

Copy X MK. II data.

  • The real X was originally slated as the antagonist of Mega Man Zero. Due to concerns over the reaction of younger audiences attached to X facing him as a villain (and considering the Mega Man X series was still ongoing), the team at Inti Creates chose to alter the game's plot one month prior to release, making him only a copy of X and expanding Ciel's role by making her his creator.[10]
  • X's ending in Mega Man X4 may be the first foreshadowing to Copy X, or likely the original intention for X to become the villain of the Zero series. Zero's ending in Mega Man X7 also foreshadows Copy X's rise to power, being released after Mega Man Zero but occurring earlier in the timeline.
  • Copy X's biography from the Rockman Zero Collection website claimed that when sealing the Dark Elf, X's soul left his body and split into five Cyber-elves from the shock. Ciel planned to incorporate these Cyber-elves into Copy X, but they rejected him and disappeared.[11] These details were later removed from the site.
  • Copy X was the second villainous clone of X to be designed, preceded by iX from the Mega Mission Carddass series and followed by Keisuke Mizuno's χ -kai-. However, Copy X is the latest of the three clones to appear in the series timeline.
  • If the player is defeated by Copy X's first form, he will continue to jump around the room and launch attacks in a taunting manner while his victory message plays.
  • Both of Copy X's forms share the least health of the final bosses in the Mega Man Zero series, with both forms having only two life bars, in a contrast to the later final bosses, and some bosses earlier in the first game (which includes the Four Guardians), which had three life bars. He still has the most total health of the bosses in the first Mega Man Zero.
  • The theme of Copy X's final form, "Fake", resembles Vile's theme from the first Mega Man X.
  • The Modified Pantheon Aqua from Mega Man Zero 3 emits phrases and an eerie cackle similar to Copy X's final form. It also has large claws and uses attacks similar to Copy X's Bind Ring and Mekido Flame.
  • In Copy X's basic form, his mugshot did not match the sprite. The mugshot shows that he has red eyes and the same ears as X, while his sprite has a different ear design and blue eyes, his eyes changed from blue to red after wearing armor. In Zero 3, his eyes are unified to blue before wearing armor, but the ears in the mugshot are still not corrected.
  • Fan guides have incorrectly referred to Copy X's second form as "Angel X", however no official source for this name exists.
  • It is possible that Copy X utilizes the Dark Elf's power to transform into his second form, given that the Dark Elf is known to transform other robots (including Pantheons, Elpizo, and Omega) into superior forms.
