"Hey, Blue Bomber! Just a little unfair to steal other robots' arms, don'tcha think?"
―Copy Robot as Mega Man, Mega Man: Powered Up

Copy Robot (コピーロボット Kopī Robotto) is a boss character from the original Mega Man series. Copy Robot is an evil copy of the player's character created by a 3D copy system inside Dr. Wily's robot plant, being an identical copy with almost the same performance as the original, but with a different personality. The copy can also be told apart by the red eyes.

Appearances[]

Mega Man[]

Copy Robot is the boss of Wily Stage 2 in this game. When Mega Man reaches the boss room, two devices hover down. One of them scans his body, and the other uses that data to generate a copy of Mega Man.

Attack pattern[]

Copy Robot follows the exact same movement pattern as Elec Man.[1] He will walk back and forth around the arena, and shoot a projectile once he reaches one of his three spots. He also jumps forward or backwards when the player shoots and takes knockback. The key differences is that Copy Robot is much slower but has no windup to his attack, shooting immediately. Thus, he cannot be cheesed as easily. The unique aspect about Copy Robot is that he will change weapons to always match what the player is currently using. Mega Buster is the easiest projectile to dodge given its small size, with Fire Storm and Thunder Beam being the toughest ones to dodge. Ice Slasher moves slowly and Rolling Cutter boomerangs back to the boss. Hyper Bomb can only hurt the player upon detonation, and Super Arm / Magnet Beam doesn't actually do an attack as there are no blocks in the area.

Weaknesses[]

Copy Robot is a very resistant boss, but there are a few weapons that can do 2 damage against him: these being the Fire Storm, Thunder Beam, and Hyper Bomb. Fire Storm is the most recommended one to use, as the projectile is quick and fast and if the boss jumps past it, he'll get hit by the pseudo-shield. Thunder Beam is a decent choice, but the wide range of the boss's attack makes it hard to avoid damage. As Hyper Bomb uses 2 ammo with each throw, it is not recommended.

Mega Man Powered Up[]

MMPU CopyRobot of ElecMan

The Copy Robot of Elec Man appears in Mega Man Powered Up.

Copy Robot will be a copy of whoever appears in his room, but he has a glowing-blueish tinge to his color, as do the Robot Masters encountered before him, suggesting that they also are copies. When copying Roll, the copy will always have the default Roll costume regardless of the player's costume. Copy Robot is shown during dialogues to be cocky and sarcastic, referring to most of the Robot Masters by nicknames, the only exception being Oil Man. He has a slight personality tweak at times depending on who he is copying; as Guts Man, he claims nothing is better than brute strength, while as Ice Man, he wants a "chilling silence". In addition, his sarcasm and transformations can also severely backfire on him and cause his enemy to want to recruit him if they win, as evidenced by Guts Man and Ice Man's replies to him, to his shock. Based on the encounter as Mega, it also shows that Copy Robot doesn't like it if he copies seemingly weak robots.

Unlike his original incarnation, the Copy Robot is encountered in the third Wily stage; the CWU-01P and the flooded tunnel that leads to the room that it is fought in take the Copy Robot's place.

Strategy[]

As Mega Man in New Style, Copy Robot starts the fight with using the Mega Buster before eventually switching to the Special Weapons, but unlike the original game, he can change between weapons at will. When using a Special Weapon, he will take on that weapon's owner's damage properties (For example, if Copy Robot uses Fire Storm, he would be weak to the player's Ice Slasher while resistant against their Oil Slider and Fire Storm just like Fire Man.) He will also change weapons after he is knocked down from being hit by a weapon that targeted his weakness, including Mega Man C's Charge Shots and Proto Man's Proto Strike (While equipped with the Mega Buster, he cannot be knocked down with the latter two weapons). In Easy, he moves back and forth while jumping and attacking occasionally. In Normal, Copy Robot will always move in the opposite direction the player is facing and jumps whenever the player does so. In Hard, he will move back and forth while only using Charge Shots and will jump whenever the player uses an attack.

If playing as a Robot Master, Copy Robot uses exactly the same fighting style as the boss version of the player's character. When Copy Robot copies Roll, he will move back and forth while attacking with the Roll Swing whenever he is close to the player; in Easy and Normal he will stop for a brief moment before attacking but in Hard, he will do so immediately, making it difficult for the player to dodge the attack. In Normal and Hard, the copy Roll will also jump across the field a few times, swinging with each jump; in Normal, he makes jumps of a fixed distance towards the other side while in Hard, he will jump larger distances while following the player. When copying Mega, Copy Robot's attack and movement patterns are similar to his Roll counterpart in each corresponding difficulty, albeit attacking only with the Mega Kick.

When Copy Robot copies Proto Man, in Easy, all he does is walk back and forth while occasionally jumping and firing a Proto Strike, similar to his Mega Man counterpart in Easy. In Normal and Hard, Copy Robot fires off three rapid-fire Proto Strikes every time he reaches an edge, often jumping to make the pattern more difficult to dodge. Between firing Proto Strikes in Normal, Copy Robot will also jump directly to the player's location and then jumps one more to the edge if the player prompts an attack while Copy Robot is walking to the other side. In Hard, Copy Robot will always jump in this manner between firing Proto Strikes. Also in Hard, if the player prompts an attack while facing Copy Robot as he's firing, he will stop firing and puts up his shield that blocks all incoming ranged attacks. He will resume shooting after a short while if the player does not attack.

Mega Man Megamix[]

"Tell me, Proto Man... am I a copy?"
—Copy Mega Man, Mega Man Megamix vol.3, The Greatest Enemy in History

Copy Mega Man, known as Copy Rockman (コピーロックマン Kopī Rokkuman) in Japan, is a character from the manga Mega Man Megamix based on the Copy Robot.

With the aim of making the mass production of robots easier and more accessible, Dr. Wily began experimenting with a 3D model copy system. Copy Mega Man was the result of his first successful test of his system. The copy system is designed to replicate both the physical appearance and basic AI of the original target, but as far as combat and buster skills are concerned, Copy Mega Man is capable of exploring the limits of his own potential regardless of personal danger, whereas the real Mega Man's power levels are set to the maximum level that is possible without running the risk of overloading him. Dr. Wily's copy system also automatically installs an Evil Chip in every copy that it produces.

Despite being a copy, he has some differences from the original: His eyes are different, he has a different voice tone, the Evil Chip with Dr. Wily's mark is hidden in his neck collar, and he can be more powerful than the original, but at the risk of overloading and destroying himself if he uses his full power. He also obtained the Special Weapons from the eight participants of the robot tournament controlled by Mr. X.

In the story "The Greatest Enemy in History", Mega Man was copied while inside New Metropolis and is defeated by the copy. The copy has the original Mega Man's memories and believes himself to be the real one, continuing Mega Man's fight against Mr. X and eventually defeating him. However, the Evil Chip twisted his sense of justice, making him fight brutally against Mr. X's Numbers and attempt to kill Wily, shooting his decoy. Afterwards Copy Mega Man declares war against humanity.

After the real Mega Man is repaired, he fights against the copy again, and the copy starts overloading during the battle. A piece of his neck falls and reveals Wily's Evil Chip. When he finds out that he's the copy, he revolts and attacks the real Mega Man, accidentally hurting Roll when she moves in front of the original to protect him, making Copy Mega Man feel guilty for shooting his sister. Despite Roll asking the ones present to forgive the copy, the Light Numbers are angry, and Cut Man attempts to cut his neck. Wily gave Shadow Man the task to watch the copy, and was presumably ordered to destroy him if something went wrong. However, Shadow Man decided to save the copy, taking him to a safe area. Shadow Man reveals how he was created and is impressed that he didn't become fully evil due to the Evil Chip, but notes that it still had some influence on him, and tells him that whatever he does next, that should be his decision. Afterwards the copy makes a scene to call attention, wanting to make Mega Man appear and show the world that the real one was innocent of his actions. However, Bass appears and gets into a fight with the copy, who makes him overload. When the real Mega Man arrives, the copy is in a critical condition, but is happy that he could prove his innocence. Knowing that he was beyond salvation, the copy sacrifices himself to stop Bass despite everyone pleading him not to, exploding and severely damaging Bass. Far away, Shadow Man angrily asks Proto Man if he knew that the copy would do that, with Proto Man replying that he didn't and that the copy "wanted to die... that's all."

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

ArchieCopyRobot

Copy Robot in the Mega Man #4.

Mega Man first faces the Copy Robot inside Dr. Wily's hideout after defeating the first six Robot Masters. Mega Man tries every weapon to defeat him, but each one is unsuccessful since the Copy Robot has them all as well. This stalemate continues until Mega man uses the Magnet Beam to get away from him. While trying to think of a way to defeat the copy, the original six Robot Masters break into the room and combine their powers in one attack, destroying the Copy Robot instantly, saying that they accomplished their order to destroy "one Mega Man."

Copy Robot later reappeared (Now with a darker color scheme and wearing a purple scarf so that he resembled Mega Man?) during the Worlds Collide crossover arc. He tricked Sonic into fighting Mega Man (who similarly was tricked into fighting Sonic by Metal Sonic), and later fights against the heroes alongside the Genesis Unit, but is defeated.

A new Copy Robot would later appear in issue 47 employing a tactic similar to the Holograph Mega Mans, but unlike in Mega Man 3, the trio actually does use Special Weapons, with two of the holograms even using the Needle Cannon and Shadow Blade, with the main Copy using Gemini Laser.

Trivia[]

  • Although not Copy Robot himself, one of the boss submissions for Mega Man 6, Clone Man, strongly resembled Mega Man, hence the name.
  • Though Copy Robot didn't appear in Captain N: The Game Master, the episode "In Search of the King" did feature an evil Mega Man in the form of his counterpart from the Mirror Zone.
  • Despite his prominent appearance in the early issues of Worlds Collide, Copy Robot doesn't appear as part of the Robot Master army in Sonic the Hedgehog #250.
  • When fighting Copy Robot in the boss battle Challenges in Mega Man Powered Up, the player will always fight the Mega Man form of Copy Robot regardless of what character they are using.
  • Both Copy Robot and Mega Man? have access to the Charge Shot in Mega Man Powered Up (with the latter also having access to the Slide) despite that these abilities were not created yet due to being a remake of the first game.
