Circring Q9 (サークリングQ9 Sākuringu Q9) is the boss of the second Wily Castle stage in Mega Man 5.

Mega Man 5[]

Attack Pattern[]

The arena is flat, but has two semi-solid platforms on the sides. When stood on, they will slowly hover up to the middle of the screen (though slightly away from the direct center) before coming back down. Circring Q9 alternates between two different movement patterns, and its head, the weak point, is protected at all times by a yellow circular ring. The ring has two door flaps on the sides that open up at different times depending on the movement pattern, and the boss can only be damaged when these side flaps are open.

The first movement pattern has Circring Q9 erratically flying near the top are of the screen in a wave sideways motion. Throughout this movement, the boss attacks by shooting four orange orbs from the head's top funnel in a lob trajectory, each aimed at Mega Man's position. However, the initial part of this arc is invisible from passing the screen border, making it a bit tricky to dodge. Circring Q9 also keeps its door flaps open and closed at a 50/50 rate, and this would be a good opportunity to use the semi-solid platforms. After the fourth orange orb is shot, Circring Q9 will be at the center and begin the second movement pattern.

This second movement pattern has Circring Q9 move in an inverted v-shaped ascending/descending motion, dipping down to the corners of the screen. Each time Circring Q9 reaches a corner, it attacks by firing a shot from its mouth, loosely aimed at Mega Man's position in a straight line. This shot will actually fly over Mega Man's head if he stands still, so sliding is not necessary. Circring Q9 also keeps its door flaps open at all times during this movement, making it the best opportunity to damage him. Circring Q9 will touch both corners (and firing two shots as a result) before heading back to the center. It closes its door flaps once it reaches the center, ready to begin the first movement pattern.

Weakness[]

Circring Q9 is weak to Gyro Attack, and simply goes down in 7 hits. Due to only being vulnerable from the sides, the manual aiming of Gyro Attack is not necessary for this battle. As with all bosses, Circring Q9 takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot.

Trivia[]

  • The boss's ability to stay forever in the air renders the Charge Kick and Water Wave useless against it.
  • Cricring Q9's design may have been a direct inspiration for the design of Mawverne, a fortress boss in Mega Man 11. Both bosses utilize a protective shield around their central head and attack with different projectiles.
