The Armed Phenomenon (アームドフェノメノン Āmudo Fenomenon) is a transformation in the Mega Man Zero series that allows the Four Guardians to increase their strength.

Characteristics[]

The Armed Phenomenon transformation only takes a few seconds; energy builds up, causing the user to glow with a spherical aura that expands into a flash, obscuring a near instantaneous change. The Four Guardians trade their humanoid bodies for huge, animalistic vehicles armed to the teeth. They look nearly as animalistic as Mutos Reploids, but their humanoid faces are retained.

The exact nature of Armed Phenomenon is unknown. The Four Guardians only used their Armed Phenomena while the Baby Elves were free, and never considered using them against Omega, which may indicate that the Armed Phenomena are not base functions of their bodies. There are no known risks or detriments in use of Armed Phenomenon, and users can revert to their original forms at will (save for the Baby Elf-controlled Harpuia).

History[]

Mega Man Zero 2[]

After the rogue Elpizo intrudes into the center of Neo Arcadia, Yggdrassil, and damages the Dark Elf's seal created by X, Zero infiltrated Yggdrassil through the temples of the Four Guardians. Fefnir and Leviathan activated their Armed Phenomena to fight Zero in the Temple of Flame and Temple of Ice respectively, but even these powered up forms were no match for Zero. Although Harpuia plans to attack Elpizo instead, he is forced by the Baby Elves Crea and Prea to transform and fight Zero in the Temple of Wind. Harpuia is defeated, but he returns to his senses and pleads with Zero to protect X on his behalf.

List of phenomena[]

  • Sage Harpuia: Harpuia transforms into a green, helicopter-like aircraft with giant avian talons. He is forced into this form against his will by the Baby Elves. Like regular Harpuia, his Armed Phenomenon form has terraforming capabilities, which gives it the ability to emit electricity and create strong winds. It also has on-board missiles, and often tries head-on attacks as well.
  • Fairy Leviathan: Leviathan transforms into a blue submarine resembling a manta ray. She is a more aggressive fighter in this form, having lost much of her evasiveness due to her increased size. She maintains her ice powers, can swim through the water at great speeds, and can launch torpedoes.
  • Fighting Fefnir: Fefnir transforms into an orange, three-wheeled tank. He uses its large size to his advantage, slowly and steadily forcing Zero to keep moving through a hall during their battle. He uses his four dragon-like fire cannons to attack.
  • Hidden Phantom: Phantom transforms into a white, ghost-like bat shape. This is the only Armed Phenomenon not fought in Mega Man Zero 2, due to his death in the first game. Concept art shows Phantom's attacks in this form would have included flight and spear-like projectiles.

Similar phenomena[]

Besides the Armed Phenomenon, there are other unnamed transformations that function nearly identically. Several of them are spurred by the Dark Elf, just like how the Guardians were under the influence of Baby Elves.

  • Copy X: Copy X takes a seraph-like appearance as his second form. However, he does not revert to his original form upon defeat like the Four Guardians do. He tries to take this form again in Mega Man Zero 3, but is interrupted by a bomb placed in his body by Dr. Weil.
  • Elpizo: After Elpizo seeks more power from the Dark Elf, it fully absorbs him, transforming into a demonic wraith with four jagged wings, assisted by the Baby Elves. His transformation uses the exact same sound effect and has similar visuals to an Armed Phenomenon transformation.
  • Modified Pantheon Aqua: In the Oceanic Highway Ruins, a Pantheon Aqua is modified by the Dark Elf to slow Zero as she escapes. It possesses wings and claws reminiscent of Elpizo's Dark Elf transformation.
  • Omega: Omega's second form is a giant Reploid resembling a combination of X, Zero, and Omega's first form. His body is so large that it doesn't fit on the screen. It features an X-Buster-like cannon and a Z-Saber-like blade. The middle head, Omega's original head in the center can also attack with energy balls.

Trivia[]

  • Second forms for the Four Guardians were designed at the same time of their development for the first Mega Man Zero, but they were not used due to technical limitations, appearing instead in the sequel.[1] This is where concept art of Phantom's Armed Phenomenon can be found.
  • Instead of using Armed Phenomenon in the Rockman Zero manga, the Four Guardians merge into Cial's "perfect Reploid".
  • The concept appears to be a nod to the concept of the same name from the manga series Baoh Raihousha, though the actual effect is fairly different.
  • The term Armed Phenomenon was later used in the Japanese version of the Inti Creates game Azure Striker Gunvolt, where certain humans use "Glaives" to unleash their sealed powers and transform.
