—Anubis Necromancess, Neo Arcadia Core

Anubis Necromancess, known as Anubistep Necromances (アヌビステップ・ネクロマンセス Anubisuteppu Nekuromansesu) in Japan, is a boss from the Mega Man Zero series. He is a Mutos Reploid based on the Egyptian jackal god of death, Anubis, and is a member of Fighting Fefnir's Scorched Earth Squadron as a medic and undertaker.

Because Anubis Necromancess is capable of self-resurrection, an ordinal numeral is appended to his name with each resurrection. In Mega Man Zero, he is first titled Anubis Necromancess III in the Desert, and Anubis Necromancess IV for his rematch in the Neo Arcadia Core. When he is revived by Dr. Weil in Mega Man Zero 3, he is titled Anubis Necromancess V.[1]

History[]

Background[]

At some point in the past, Anubis Necromancess was destroyed during an operation with the Scorched Earth Squadron, but revived himself as Anubis Necromancess II. He was killed again soon after when an aircraft crash-landed onto him, but he revived again as Anubis Necromancess III.[1]

Mega Man Zero[]

Anubis Necromancess III is the boss of the "Find Shuttle" mission, where he attacks Zero while the latter seeks survivors from an aircraft crash in the Desert (possibly the same shuttle that killed Anubis Necromancess II). He declares himself the king of destruction and ruler of the desert, but Zero kills him. When Zero infiltrates the Neo Arcadia Core, Anubis is revived as Anubis Necromancess IV for a rematch. After being destroyed for the fourth time, it seems there is a limit to his self-resurrection, as he stays dead until an external party intervenes.

Mega Man Zero 3[]

Anubis is finally resurrected by Dr. Weil as Anubis Necromancess V, being repaired in the Weapons Repair Factory.[1][2] He is placed under direct service of his old master, Copy X MK. II, alongside Hanumachine R and Blizzack Staggroff R. When Copy X orders an attack on the Resistance, Anubis leads an army to attack the New Resistance Base from the southern desert. Zero destroys him once again.

Strategy[]

As long as his "heart" isn't destroyed, Anubis Necromancess can use nanobots to repair himself. Anubis' cane blocks Buster Shots, regardless of whether or not they are charged. He is completely immune to electric attacks in the first game. He can also dismantle and restore his body to hide within sand, and use the nanobots to control his surroundings, including modifying the shape of sand to create walls, dunes, and quicksand, and summoning "zombies". With his revival in Zero 3, he gained electric powers that removed his weakness to fire, but gave him a weakness to ice instead. He also gained a coffin that he could use as a weapon to squish people with.[1]

Attacks:

Attack Description
Cane Throw (MMZ) / Spinning Cane (MMZ3) Anubis will attack using his flying cane. The cane is thrown on Zero's current position.
Sand Crush (MMZ) / Coffin Press (MMZ3) Anubis will summon a pair of sand walls with spikes on top (or two halves of an electrified sarcophagus in Mega Man Zero 3) to smash Zero.
Touching the spikes or getting squished will not kill Zero instantly. In both games, the attack can be used up to four times.
Return of the Dead Anubis will summon Pantheon Zombies.
If the player deals enough damage to Anubis, the Pantheon Zombies will crumble away.
Sand Juggling In Mega Man Zero 3, Anubis Necromancess V can modify the sand, creating dunes or turning it into quicksand. There are two formations to the dunes, one being similar to his arena in the first game.
EX Skill: Dead Cane (デッドケイン, MMZ) / Spin Crawler (MMZ3) Anubis makes his cane spin across the ground.
In Mega Man Zero 3, the modified terrain can affect the EX Skill.

Etymology[]

  • Anubis Necromancess is derived from the Egyptian jackal god of the dead, Anubis, and the term necromancy, referring to magic that resurrects the dead. An ordinal number is appended to his name for every time he resurrects himself. In Japanese, his name "Anubistep" borrows the ending of the name of Imhotep, an Egyptian high priest who was culturally deified.

Trivia[]

  • Anubis Necromancess is the only boss with different elemental weaknesses in the Mega Man Zero series, being weak against Fire in the first installment and Ice in the third.
  • Anubis Necromancess (Z1) and Asura Basura are the only Mutos Reploids without elemental attacks to have elemental weaknesses.
